In the City, Apps Help and Hinder Disability - The Atlantic
But even if all these problems were solved, digital-accessibility apps still pose one final threat to disability advocacy in urban environments. Apps can make cities more navigable, but they do not change the material features of that environment. Most of the time, they record the current conditions in the built environment rather than advocate for better ones. Before apps came on the scene, disability activists used mapping to catalog injustices and to imagine alternative futures: new environments in which accessibility was the norm, rather than the exception. Contemporary projects should incorporate that lesson, too. By incorporating knowledge from broad groups of people with disabilities, digital mapping could do more than just record the world as it is today. It could also drive political, design, and policy improvements. After all, to deserve the name, a smart city ought to be a better city, not just a more technological one

Why We Need to Stop Comparing Mental Illness to Physical Illness
The conversation looks something like this: “Why can’t we treat mental illnesses the way we treat physical ones? You wouldn’t tell someone with a broken leg not to take pain medications or tell someone with bronchitis that they’re faking their illness.”

I get it.

As someone who has PTSD, which is largely invisible and commonly misunderstood, I often feel like my mental health isn’t taken seriously and is uniquely stigmatized.

But the difference here mainly lies in the fact that when we’re talking about physical illnesses, we’re making the assumption that folks with physical illnesses don’t face ableism or stigma the way that folks with mental illnesses do.

And that’s not accurate.

When we’re comparing short-term, treatable conditions, like a broken limb, to chronic mental health issues, we’re using the wrong comparison.

Folks don’t react to a short-term illness with ableism because it’s assumed that the condition is going to be easy to treat and will go away soon.

P.I. Engineering Assistive Technology X-keys Controls "The No Slogan Company"
Buttons and foot switches make excellent accessible and reliable triggers for Assistive Technology applications. Our programmable input devices can be applied to many uses where dedicated input provides a better means of interaction with a computer or tablet.

Key Speak

Our Key Speak application announces the name of each key pressed on a keyboard, and sends the key only if it is pressed a second time. This allows a user with targeting impairment to hunt and find the correct key before sending it to the computer.

Customized Input

"X-Keys are an indispensable part of how I use my computer. I would be miserable without them." - Garry Bartsch

Enabled Gaming

"The X-Keys are working great. 100% better than my old setup, and I feel like now I can actually get better at the game instead of being held back by technology." - Keith Knight

runpunkrun | Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood, by Trevor Noah
His stories are funny, sad, scary, moving, and awe-inspiring, because above all, no matter what else is going on, Patricia Nombuyiselo Noah, Trevor Noah's mom, is a stone-cold badass. Forward thinking, generous, forgiving, deeply religious, someone who ignores rules that don't make any sense. "Don't fight the system; mock the system," Trevor describes her, a woman who, during apartheid, with no end in sight, raised her son not to submit to artificially imposed limits and taught him there was a world beyond the township. She's also, the way Trevor tells it, kind of mean to him. Like the time they were in a grocery store and he was being a pest, begging for a treat, and she pretended not to be his mother. Trevor was existentially confused, and so was the cashier, who couldn't understand why this light-skinned boy thought this black woman was his mother. Trevor nearly had a breakdown. That is some next-level trolling.

dark chocolate coconut macaroons – smitten kitchen
Dark Chocolate Coconut Macaroons

Yield: About 4 dozen small cookies

4 ounces (115 grams or about 1/3 cup) unsweetened chocolate (sometimes sold as 99%), chopped small
14 ounces (400 grams) sweetened, flaked coconut
2/3 cup (130 grams) granulated sugar
6 tablespoons (30 grams) cocoa powder
3 large egg whites
Heaped 1/4 teaspoon flaked sea salt or level 1/4 teaspoon table salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Heat oven to 325°F. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.

Heat approximately half of chocolate chunks in a small saucepan until just melted, then, off the heat, stir in the remaining chunks until they’re smooth. The residual heat should be enough to melt them and leave the mixture lukewarm; if it’s not, heat the mixture again until just melted, but not very hot.

In a food processor, blend the coconut for one full minute. Add sugar and cocoa powder, blend another full minute. Add egg whites, salt and vanilla and blend until combined, then the melted chocolate until smooth. With a tablespoon measure or cookie scoop (I used a #70 scoop), scoop batter into 1-inch mounds. You can arrange the cookies fairly close together as they don’t spread, just puff a bit.

Bake cookies for 15 minutes, until the macaroons are shiny and just set. Let them rest on the tray for 10 minutes after baking (or you can let them fully cool in place, if you’re not in a rush to use the tray again), as they’ll be hard to move right out of the oven. They’ll firm up as they cool, but still remain softer and less dry inside than traditional macaroons. Thank goodness.

mirabile | Mother, and some links
Comfort and quality of life are most important

• Stop any interventions designed to prolong life
• Do not feed extra-rich meals to avoid weight loss, beyond what she already receives
• Do not force or coax her to eat
• No feeding tube
• No medical procedures that might prolong or delay her death
• No intravenous fluids
• No antibiotics to extend life, only to keep her comfortable
• No dialysis
• No surgery
• No tests where the results would be meaningless (e.g., to decide to perform surgery)

• Keep her out of physical and emotional pain
• Do give painkillers, including opioids if necessary
• Let her eat what she wants
• Let her die in her own room with her loved ones around her

We were surprised how much of this Mother already had listed in her advance directive. We all need to update ours.

On that cheerful note, how about some links? A few are a bit old but I think they're worth sharing.

And then late yesterday I had a migraine attack, BANG, that's it, it's like being hit by lightning but soundless, lightless. It unloosens all the knots of your sinews or however Homer puts it, zing you're tasting the metal of the bright leaf-blade and you drop not like a graceful poppy but a sack of meat. You're not even meat anymore, just a bunch of nerve endings trying not to feel. All you do is endure and at first the only reason you know the endurance will have an end is that it happened before; then you have faith that it happened before; then you don't even think about it ending, just ebbing and flowing, moments when your nerve endings short out or relax or God knows what's happening. You breathe as shallowly as possible, trying not to disturb anything in there, and people keep telling you to breathe, just breathe, and then you do and the pain recedes a little bit! and then the nausea shows up like the black bank of rainclouds unloosing after the thunder and is all HEY HEY BABY. It's not even nausea like "oops gotta go gotta run," it's like your internal organs suddenly realized they're in jail and they're organizing a breakout. See where breathing gets you.

SO T made me oatmeal with sliced bananas in it and a small amount of milk and then I'm going back to bed. Eating after a migraine ebbs is very strange. Everything is so delicious! but you only want a little bit of it. So nice to feel like you have a personality again instead of being a seismograph! Your temple twinges and you try to ignore it. Breathe, relax those facial muscles, put the tip of your tongue against the back of your front teeth so you don't clench your jaw, eat the banana. Well maybe half the banana. Maybe half of half. Save the rest for later. Since now there is a later, not just nownownownow.

1. Text Formatting (in-line HTML)
2. Page Formatting (block HTML)
3. Tables and Lists
4. Links and Images

Each tag will have - at a minimum - a link to the w3schools page about it (so you can learn more), a code example, and the result of the code example.

It will also introduce tag attributes, ways to further refine formatting, for a few simple - but widely applicable - cases.

International prevalence of fragrance sensitivity | SpringerLink
“Fragrance sensitivity” is a health condition characterized by adverse health effects from exposure to fragranced consumer products (Caress and Steinemann 2009). A “fragranced consumer product” (or “fragranced product”) is a product that contains an added fragrance or that is largely comprised of fragrance (Steinemann 2016). Fragranced products can include air fresheners, deodorizers, cleaning supplies, laundry detergents, fabric softeners, essential oils, scented candles, soaps, personal care products, colognes, and hand sanitizers, to name a few out of numerous everyday items. A single “fragrance” in a product is typically a complex mixture of dozens of compounds, many derived from petrochemicals (Sell 2006), among nearly 4000 documented fragrance ingredients (IFRA 2016).

No law in any country requires full disclosure of all ingredients in a fragrance. Instead of listing specific ingredients, a product may list the general term “fragrance” (or another legally accepted term, such as “perfume”). Further, no law requires full disclosure of all ingredients in a consumer product (other than for foods, drugs, and cosmetics), not even the general term “fragrance.” Thus, consumers have limited information about individual fragrance ingredients in a product as well as whether a product even contains a fragrance (Lunny et al. 2017; Steinemann 2009).

Exposure to fragranced products has been associated with a range of adverse human health and societal effects among the general population, and especially among vulnerable sub-populations such as individuals with asthma (Weinberg et al. 2017; Steinemann 2018c; Steinemann et al. 2018), autism (Steinemann 2018d), and chemical sensitivity (Steinemann 2019). Fragrance sensitivity can also be considered a disabling health condition that is covered under disability legislation in certain countries. However, relatively little research has investigated the prevalence of fragrance sensitivity, and more specifically links between fragranced consumer products and adverse health and societal effects.

This study investigates the effects of exposure to fragranced products on adults in four countries: United States (US), Australia (AU), United Kingdom (UK), and Sweden (SE). It builds upon and extends the individual national studies in the US, AU, UK, and SE (Steinemann 2016, 2017a, 2018a, b), offering greater breadth and depth of analysis, including new data and results on specific fragranced product exposures associated with specific health effects, amounts and costs of lost workdays and lost jobs, and comparisons and summaries across countries.
