Remember: recognizing and rewarding employees for their good work is one of the best and most effective things any leader can do to move the needle on employee engagement and performance. And it doesn't need to cost a lot of money. A simple "thank you" is usually all it takes.

Wage Slave or Entrepreneur?: Contesting the Dualism of Legal Worker Identities
This Article challenges the duality of worker classification in employment regulation by positioning the employee and the independent contractor in U.S. legal history and in the lives of contemporary workers. Part I situates the debate in work law scholarship. Part II uses historical and legal archives to challenge the prevailing assumptions about the employee and independent contractor classifications in employment and labor law.

The Regulation of On-Demand Work: The Politics of the Uber Economy
A number of regulatory issues arise alongside these demands for services and work. Among these are labor regulation and workers’ rights, consumer protection, public goods (including taxation), and competition. Regulation, of course, is the result of a political process, and many of these issues are highly contested. This paper explores the emergent political process of the regulation of labor, or labor-brokerage, platforms through a case study of Uber.

This Note asserts that Uber misleads uberX drivers about the type and amount of coverage available to them, as uberX drivers have no first-party protections in place while they drive around searching for fares. This Note further argues that based on these insurance mis- representations, Uber may be liable to injured uberX drivers under California's unfair competition law for engaging in unfair business practices. Accordingly, uberX drivers should be entitled to restitution for their injuries and injunctive re- lief to prevent Uber from continuing to mislead uberX drivers about their insur- ance coverage.

Providing Inventors More Time through the USPTO’s Extended Missing Parts Pilot Program
Under the pilot program, an applicant must file a non-provisional application no later than 12 months after the filing
date of the provisional application, and request a delay in payment of the search and examination fees at the time
the non-provisional application is filed. These steps will ensure they can take advantage of the additional 12
months to pay the search and examination fees in a non-provisional application. The USPTO is providing
applicants with a form for the certification required, and to request a delay in payment of the search and examination
fees (PTO/SB/421). Only newly filed, non-provisional applications directly claiming benefit of an earlier filed
provisional application within the previous 12 months will be eligible for this pilot program.

The 5 Most Insane Examples of Chinese Counterfeiting |
Whenever you hear about counterfeit merchandise, you almost always think about China. It's not completely undeserved -- the country does have a history of churning out tons of fake DVDs, electronics, designer clothing and everything else you can and can't imagine.
Why? Because they're really, really good at it. The amount of work and creativity the Chinese underworld puts into their fakes is so damn impressive that you have to wonder why they'd ever need to steal other people's ideas. These are the people who have faked ...

What it's like to license Star Wars from LucasFilms like Angry Birds did
As of now, the official Terms of Use on the Star Wars site state, “Lucasfilm does not claim any ownership rights in user generated content (“Your Content”). After posting Your Content, you continue to retain any ownership rights you have to Your Content, and you continue to have the right to use and license Your Content in any way you choose.” However, even if you continue ownership you also grant Lucasfilm “a nonexclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, sublicenseable and transferable right and license.”

So if you’re a fan of Star Wars, and not looking to profit from your fan art, for now it seems you still have the right to do so. But if you’re looking to capitalize off that simple little equation, get ready to jump through a few hoops—and get those royalty checks ready.

Crowdfunded Businesses Face Tax Man -peHUB
This spring, Pizza Delicious, a New York-style pizza place in New Orleans, raised $18,300 on Kickstarter for a new pizza oven, offering pizzas, bumper stickers and T-shirts to those who pledged.

“We thought it would be a cool way to get people excited and drum up support for projects,” says co-owner Greg Augarten. “It’s taxed like any other income, but it’s still worth it.”

Just because the funds are taxable, though, doesn’t mean you’ll actually owe tax on them. If your business expenses are higher than the money you bring in, you may not owe anything.

Michael Guenther, a certified public accountant in Sacramento, who works with video game companies and has three Kickstarter clients, says most such startups would not owe tax in the first year because of the combination of business costs and tax benefits, such as the research and development tax credit.

How A Student Designed The Recycling Logo, And Got A Measly $2,500 | Co.Design: business + innovation + design
n 1970, Gary Anderson was a 23-year-old college student at the University of Southern California, when a Chicago container company held a design contest to raise awareness about the environment. Anderson’s submission won, and it became the internationally recognized recycling logo--and a design classic that ranks with the Coca-Cola and Nike marks, for sheer ubiquity.

Also from RASMUS
As a designer, I usually don't like it when people measure the value of a design or a logo based on how long it took to make it. That's just ignorant. That said, $2500 dollars are pretty good considering that a year later Carolyn Davidson, a student at Portland State University designed the Nike Swoosh logo for an astonishing $35!
(12 years later she did actually got further reimbursed with a Diamond Swoosh ring and stocks in Nike)

A few years ago we signed a distribution contract with a hardware manufacturer of a gaming peripheral. We'd sell it to our customers and build up demand. In exchange, we'd have exclusive distribution rights. It was a good deal for both parties -- or so we thought.

University of Missouri says student can keep full ownership of app created on campus - - Kansas City
COLUMBIA, Missouri (AP) - Tony Brown didn't set out to overhaul his college's policies on intellectual property. He just wanted an easier way of tracking local apartment rentals on his iPhone.

The University of Missouri student came up with an idea in class one day that spawned an iPhone application that has had more than 250,000 downloads since its release in March 2009. The app created by Brown and three other undergraduates won them a trip to Apple headquarters along with job offers from Google and other technology companies.

But the invention also raised a perplexing question when university lawyers abruptly demanded a 25 percent ownership stake and two-thirds of any profits. Who owns the patents and copyrights when a student creates something of value on campus, without a professor's help?
