YourEconomy.org Home | Explore Economic Activity in Your Community
YourEconomy.org (YE) is an online information tool that allows users to analyze business activity from the community level, to the state level, and across the country. It focuses on establishments that are "in-business" meaning they are intent on conducting commercial activities. YE tracks the performance of U.S. businesses from 2003 - 2017 (data back thru 1997 available with purchase), providing detailed information about jobs, sales and establishments.

YE sets itself apart by tracking all establishments (and their jobs and sales), including for-profit (both privately-owned and publicly-traded), non-profits, and government establishments providing an essential view of business activity by region and across time.

Breaking this information down into profiles, YE displays establishments by types, sizes, and activity (gain and loss), showing the unique characteristics and economic impact of businesses in your selected region. YE uses a custom "data engine" to assemble and display vast amounts of data for easy access and elegant navigation.

Inventions by women you didn't know about - INSIDER
Knight's knack for innovation started at a young age. When she was just 12 years old, she invented a safety device for cotton mills.

During her time at the Columbia Paper Bag Company in 1867, Knight began working on a machine that created flat-bottomed bags. When fellow machinist Charles Anan tried to steal her idea, Knight sued him and won the patent for her machine after a long legal battle.

Podcasts : Business : NPR
Guy Raz dives into the stories behind some of the world's best known companies. How I Built This weaves a narrative journey about innovators, entrepreneurs and idealists—and the movements they built. The series of broadcasts is titled, “How I Built This.” It is all about entrepreneurs’ stories. So I went to the website: https://www.npr.org/podcasts/510313/how-i-built-this I have found good leads for any number of new vignettes. After selecting each of the broadcasts that seem appropriate, I did a Google search for the entrepreneur’s name and for the company name. So far I have found at least 4 corroborating articles in various publications, such as Inc., Fortune, Entrepreneur, and the City Business Journals for each of the stories that I have considered.

Can Tech Get Better at Confronting Ethical Challenges? | Stanford eCorner
The trolley problem is an especially dramatic example of a challenge that exists across the technology sector: innovation is happening so rapidly that it’s flying past serious ethical questions without fully addressing them, or recognizing them as ethical questions at all. Russian propaganda designed to undermine the US presidential election flourished unchecked on Facebook and Twitter. Waze users are reshaping traffic flow in communities across the US, dramatically altering the character of once-quiet neighborhoods.

DRIVE AT YOUR OWN RISK: UBER VIOLATES UNFAIR COMPETITION LAWS BY MISLEADING UBERX DRIVERS ABOUT THEIRINSURANCE COVERAGE
This Note asserts that Uber misleads uberX drivers about the type and amount of coverage available to them, as uberX drivers have no first-party protections in place while they drive around searching for fares. This Note further argues that based on these insurance mis- representations, Uber may be liable to injured uberX drivers under California's unfair competition law for engaging in unfair business practices. Accordingly, uberX drivers should be entitled to restitution for their injuries and injunctive re- lief to prevent Uber from continuing to mislead uberX drivers about their insur- ance coverage.
