We Are Drowning in a Devolved World: An Open Letter from Devo - Noisey
“Presently, the fabric that holds a society together has shredded in the wind. Everyone has their own facts, their own private Idaho stored in their expensive cellular phones. The earbuds are in, the feedback loops are locked, and the Frappuccino’s are flowing freely. Social media provides the highway straight back to Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. The restless natives react to digital shadows on the wall, reduced to fear, hate, and superstition. There are climate change deniers, and there are even more who think that the climate is being maliciously manipulated by corporate conglomerates owned by the Central Bank to achieve global control of resources and wealth. If only that James Bond-style fantasy were true, I would be much more excited about the future, which I fear is more of a slow-death conspiracy of dunces like in Mike Judge’s movie, Idiocracy, the movie Devo should have made.”

Adrien M & Claire B - Mirages et miracles by Adrien M & Claire B | Facebook
At last here is AR which I find imaginative. I like its elemental quality: it dispenses with the concern for convincing illusion, opening the door to a more bold pairing of the "augmented" and the "real" aspects. This gives me ideas for actual work in AR.

What is the East Cut? SF's fastest growing neighborhood
I think I’ve got to start saying: if you’re not comfortable with the Tenderloin then you’re not comfortable with what’s going on in our city today. So called CBDs are a perversion of the public good... neoliberal reality (Or should I say realty?) distortion fields. The doublespeak is insane. Here is the “designer” of the “new neighborhood” name “the east cut” saying the name will catch on “organically” through a $68,000 branding campaign.

NIME 2016 'Now' by Garth Paine (Resonating Cymbals and modular synthesizer) on Vimeo
The question of sound as an experience of now, as a conduit to the quality of our belonging to the present, is challenging.Yet it is a crucial issue in discussions about ecological listening. I have come to think of sound as a viscous material, a vibrating field of energy that has texture and density and a physicality that is unlike most other media. Now suggests a desire of becoming present in the resonating sound field of our immediate environment. The energyin the field constantly modulates and drifts.I draw on voices and forces from the natural environment, humans and machines. The work seeks to draw the listeners into an inner space in which they can be both present and aware of theirsonic environment and become immersed in it. Now is partly inspired by Samuel Beckett’s novel Watt, specifically Watts mysterious journey into to the unknown. The performance is a realtime composition and can range from 20 to 60 minutes in length. I utilize a sophisticated modular synthesis setup, Kyma processing and fourspatialized resonating cymbals, shifting from one resonant harmonic to another. Nowis a quest for experiencing the moment as a singular gestalt which I have sought increasinglyand deeply through durational listening in the natural environment. In such an act of listening, I ask myself, “What does it mean to be truly present?” “Is it possible to continuously deepen that sense of presence through repeated practice?” “What does being consciously present tell me about life writ large?”

Éxodo hondureño, financiado por EU: Solalinde
For some reason I can’t comment onLuz Maria Sanchez’s post... so sharing here, this Spanish Newsweek article in which it’s claimed that trump’s government is funding the caravan. I read this in google translate which is not ideal, but I get the point. Here in the US, Trump is of course claiming that leftists, for instance George Soros, are in fact “paying for” the caravan. (They also claim all the time that progressive protesters are being paid!!!) it’s like an end run on their story... they control the story no matter what happens. A bit frightening, and certainly being used to influence the election. https://ift.tt/2QqGmMs

There’s Nothing Virtuous About Finding Common Ground | Time
“People ask how might we “meet in the middle,” as though this represents a safe, neutral and civilized space. This American fetishization of the moral middle is a misguided and dangerous cultural impulse. The middle is a point equidistant from two poles. That’s it. There is nothing inherently virtuous about being neither here nor there. Buried in this is a false equivalency of ideas, what you might call the “good people on both sides” phenomenon. When we revisit our shameful past, ask yourself, Where was the middle? Rather than chattel slavery, perhaps we could agree on a nice program of indentured servitude? Instead of subjecting Japanese-American citizens to indefinite detention during WW II, what if we had agreed to give them actual sentences and perhaps provided a receipt for them to reclaim their things when they were released? What is halfway between moral and immoral?“

Creedence Clearwater Revival - "Fortunate Son" (official video) on Vimeo
Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Fortunate Son" official music video. For the band's 50th anniversary, the label decided to commemorate the landmark with creating an official video for one of CCR's most famous songs. To say that directing this was an honor is an understatement. I grew up, like many folks within 40 years of my generation, listening to CCR. Anyone who hears the opening riffs knows exactly what song it is. It evokes pretty strong feelings for all walks of life. The song is a protest song. I wanted to create something that wound the joys of being human together in an homage to the beauty of our country. There's so much division rippling through the world right now, that I wanted to capture what it looks like on an individual level for people to find peace and harmony where they can. Everyone wants some love, respect, acknowledgment, and ability to live the way they want. It may be difficult to find at times, but when it's unturned from under the burden of oppression, these freedoms are the ones we live for. A bulk of this was shot over a couple weeks while on the road with one of my best friends and collaborators, Matt Boman. The people and stories we encountered were far too many and golden to fit into a 2 minute music video. I hope to one day create something that could do the trip its ultimate justice. Until then, please enjoy. FOLIA (2 excerpts/ 60 seconds) on Vimeo
Calculating how short-length cinema might set about to examine the experience of a tree that plays out in year-long cycles, this 24-minute study experiments with polylinear construction and polytemporal scaling of sound and image that were recorded during one 24-hour slice of street life in the span of a city block. 8K video (7680x4320) with 5.1 mix has been downsized to HD (1920x1080) with stereo audio for this preview. THE SOCIAL LIVES OF URBAN TREES is work-in-progress name for an experimental video project that merges environmental sensing with observational cinema techniques—inventing a cinéma vérité approach that takes cues from revelations that emerge from ongoing data capture. A series of video portraits of San Francisco street trees will explore the forms and qualities of public spaces created by individual trees, while using small programmable cameras and sensory apparatus to visualize and listen to the trees' own perspectives regarding their environments and various other inhabitants with whom they share the territory.
