What I learned growing up in rural America
Interesting autobiographical piece from a woman whose experiences growing up poor+country largely mirror mine. Thoughts on why the rural poor are conservative, etc.

DeathPanels.org: The Disturbing Details Behind Health Care Reform!!1!! | MetaFilter
Interesting insight into a perplexing question: Why do so many people buy into the myth that the President's health care proposal will set up "death panels"? Why do people continue to espouse this nonsense? It's not because the people saying this stuff believe it. It's because belief by their followers is a sort of filter. They want to find the people who want to believe this lunacy. Once they have them, they're easy to mold and manipulate.

I've never been a die-hard zefrank fan, though I do like his stuff. I think that this, however, is pretty damn great.

Op-Ed Columnist - Time to Reboot America - NYTimes.com
Excellent piece about U.S. stagnation. What's the cause? I told Paul J. today that I think it's that existing transnats have no reason to let go of the technologies that have them deeply entrenched in the U.S. economy. Take G.M., Ford, and Chrysler: these dinosaurs are clinging to the past and refuse to LEAD into the future, and now we're forced to bail them out. Stupid.

Kris has been very frustrated with my indecision regarding this election. Brooks does a great job of summarizing my own opinion on Obama, McCain, Biden, and Palin.
