We've had a chance to benchmark the Snapdragon 845, and while the new mobile processor closes the speed gap with the A11 Bionic a little bit, Apple's blazing mobile processor is still faster. But we did see improved graphics performance from the Snapdragon 845, with Qualcomm's chip outperforming the iPhone X in some tests.

Major Security Flaw May Exist in Intel CPUs
To fix this flaw, kernel memory would need to be even more isolated from user processes, but there's a catch. It appears that the flaw exists in part because kernel-userland memory sharing allows systems to run more speedily, and stopping that sharing would decrease CPU performance.

This speed dampening would vary by system, but could slow systems down by as much as 30 percent.

Intel Chips Have a Major Design Flaw and the Fix Means Slower PCs | News & Opinion | PCMag.com
Although nobody outside of Intel knows the specifics, the flaw is thought to be so serious it could allow any software, even a bit of JavaScript running in a web browser, to access and steal data stored in the protected kernel memory. So that includes your passwords, login keys, or any files that happen to be cached when unauthorized access occurs.

The vulnerability alone is bad enough, but the fix makes the situation even worse. Closing the security hole made possible by the chip design flaw will result in a significant performance hit to each system. Current estimates suggest that performance hit could be as high as 30 percent. You read that right, once your system is patched it may run 30 percent slower for certain tasks.

Flow batteries are a type of rechargeable battery which essentially function as rechargeable fuel cells. Typically, they’ve only tended to be used for larger scale applications, like storing power from solar panels or wind turbines for later use. The new battery design from the research team is dramatically smaller, measuring in at 1.5mm thick, and generates 1.4 watts of energy per square centimeter of battery surface (0.4 watts of which goes toward pumping the liquid to the battery), which the team claims is a record relative to the battery’s size.

The Epiphany V chip isn’t designed for gaming—it’s aimed more at real-time image processing, autonomous driving, and machine learning, said Andreas Olofsson, founder of Adapteva.

The Epiphany V is based on the RISC architecture, which is different than the x86. The chip is now being manufactured, and it could be tested in computers in the coming months. Availability of the chips could be announced next year.

In a demonstration at Microsoft’s Ignite conference on Orlando, Microsoft tapped what it called its “global hyperscale” cloud to translate 3 billion words across 5 million articles in less than a tenth of a second.

Microsoft helped custom-design the programmable logic components, or Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), that it has added to each of its computing nodes

D-Wave will ship a 2,000-qubit quantum computer next year | PCWorld
The ultimate goal is to develop a universal quantum computer, which is being pursued by IBM. There are many ways to build quantum computers, and D-Wave's system -- which is based on the concept of quantum annealing -- is aimed at specific tasks. IBM's using a different model to build quantum computers that can run multiple applications, much like PCs.

Open source 25-core processor can be stringed into a 200,000-core computer | PCWorld
It’s interesting that the researchers chose SPARC as the architecture of choice for it’s design. SPARC is used by Oracle in its high-end servers designed for databases, but the popularity of the architecture is waning. Fujitsu recently said it was booting SPARC in favor of ARM for servers, specifically for the Post-K supercomputer it will deploy in Japan in 2020.

The power-efficient chip design from ARM could crank up performance while reducing power consumption. Supercomputing speed is growing at a phenomenal rate, but the power consumption isn’t coming down as quickly.

ARM’s chip design will also be part of an influx of alternative chip architectures outside x86 and IBM’s Power entering supercomputing.

SoftBank agrees to buy mobile chip giant ARM for $32 billion | PCWorld
The Japanese company will retain ARM's headquarters in Cambridge and plans to double the number of employees in the U.K. over the next five years, when it will also increase the company's headcount outside the U.K.

ARM, with 4,064 employees,  will be an independent business within SoftBank, which will pay for the acquisition from existing cash resources and a loan facility.  SoftBank said it intends to retain the current ARM organization including the existing senior management team, brand, and partnership-based business model and culture.

In 2018, Intel will likely release a faster and more power-efficient Xeon Phi, a supercomputing chip that is already used in some of the world's fastest computers. Intel is also looking beyond CPUs to FPGAs (field programmable gate arrays), which can be faster at key tasks.

Intel's next monster 24-core chip is made for high-performance computers | PCWorld
The 24-core chip will go, in many cases, into monster performer four- to eight-socket servers. An eight-socket system could have up to 192 cores, with support for up to 24TB of memory.

Except for Intel's Xeon Phi supercomputer chips, the Xeon E7 chips are Intel's fastest performing processors. Intel is placing more emphasis on Xeon chips as it reduces its reliance on PCs. The company had a 99.2 percent market share in servers in 2015
