Ryzen Threadripper 2 (2990WX and 2950X) Review: AMD Unleashes 32 Cores
Even though AMD claims its top-end Threadripper 2990WX is up to 51% faster than Intel's $2000 Core i9-7980XE, there are some caveats enthusiasts need to be made aware of. For instance, the WX series' multi-chip module comprises four separate dies. Due to the constraints of AMD's existing Threadripper design, two of the 2990WX's dies aren't connected directly to main memory. That creates an architecture capable of incredible performance in heavily-threaded workloads that aren't sensitive to memory throughput, but less impressive results in bandwidth-hungry applications that don't scale well with extra cores. We found that the Threadripper 2990WX is mostly a niche product for professionals with specific requirements. Still, it sets a new high water mark for compute horsepower on the desktop.

Intel's New Roadmap Revealed: 10nm Ice Lake In 2020, 14nm Cooper Lake 2019
Intel's Cascade Lake is coming to market in 2018. The 14nm processors support the long-overdue Intel Optane Persistent Memory, which was originally slated for release with the Skylake Xeon family. Intel integrated a new memory controller in Cascade Lake to support the new Optane DIMMs. This will also be the first generation of Xeon processors with in-silicon mitigations for the Spectre/Meltdown vulnerabilities. So these chips will likely spur a healthy refresh cycle in the data center.

The Cooper Lake-SP processors will come to market in 2019, with the most notable addition being Intel's adoption of Bfloat 16, which is Google's new floating-point format. This exciting development should provide tangible boosts to machine learning operations. The 14nm Cooper Lake processors are widely considered a stop-gap measure by Intel to bridge between current 14nm and the overdue 10nm processors.

China Finds Zen: Begins Production Of x86 Processors Based On AMD's IP
Chinese-designed "Dhyana" x86 processors based on AMD's Zen microarchitecture are beginning to surface from Chinese chip producer Hygon. The processors come as the fruit of AMD's x86 IP licensing agreements with its China-based partners and break the decades-long stranglehold on x86 held by the triumvirate of Intel, AMD and VIA Technologies. Details are also emerging that outline how AMD has managed to stay within the boundaries of the x86 licensing agreements but still allow Chinese-controlled interests to design and sell processors based on the Zen design.

The Next iPhone's A12 Chip Is Ready to Beat Android (Again)
The company's manufacturing partner Taiwan Semiconductor has started to mass-produce the A12 processor we'll find in this year's iPhones, Bloomberg is reporting, citing people who claim to have knowledge of those production efforts. According to the report, the the new chip will feature a 7-nanometer design instead of the 10-nanometer process Apple used in last year's A11 chips.

The smaller chips should allow for more design flexibility, but will also likely be faster and more efficient, allowing for better performance and longer battery life.

Intel Document Leaks X399, Confirms Cannon Lake Support For Z390
The second big reveal in the document is the existence of a successor to the X299 chipset. A new high-end desktop (HEDT) chipset called the X399 is coming. That name is the same as AMD’s existing X399 chipset that the Threadripper processors use. When AMD took the name “B350” before Intel did, Intel chose to use “B360” instead. It looks like Intel isn’t backing down this time, so we don’t know how this situation of overlapping names will work out.

The launch on April 19th will consist of four processors: two from the Ryzen 7 line, with eight cores and sixteen threads, and two from the Ryzen 5 line, with six cores and twelve threads.  These processors are built on GlobalFoundries' 12nm process, which uses some slight process changes to enable up to 10% better performance when directly porting a 14nm design (as AMD is doing here), which means that compared to the previous generation, the new parts have slightly higher frequencies.

Intel’s Core i7-9700K: What We Know (And How It Could Beat AMD)
Multiple rumors and leaks strongly indicate that the ostensible Core i7-9700K will sport eight CPU cores and 16 threads, in contrast to the six cores and 12 threads on the Core i7-8700K. If this turns out to be true, it will be a first for Intel on a mainstream-grade CPU platform—as opposed to the enthusiast-targeted Core X-Series platform, which goes all the way up to 18 cores (if you can afford to drop a couple of grand on a CPU). But the eight cores on the Core i7-9700K, if that turns out to be accurate, only just matches what AMD has to offer in terms of cores and threads on its mainstream Ryzen CPUs; it doesn’t surpass the competition.

Intel Expands 8th Gen Core: Core i9 on Mobile, Iris Plus, Desktop, Chipsets, and vPro
As part of today’s launch, Intel is announcing four new chipsets for the desktop platforms. This models ‘fill out’ the product stack, similar to how previous generation chipsets were labelled. Joining the currently available Z370 chipset will be the mid-range H370 chipset, the corporate focused vPro-enabled Q370 chipset, the cheaper mid-range B360 chipset, and the limited function (but super cheap) consumer-focused H310 chipset. All four of these new chipsets are based on the Platform Controller Hub (PCH) originally designed for the still-missing Cannon Lake architecture CPUs.

Intel indicated in a January 2017 revision of its Atom C2000 family documentation that the chip line contains a clock flaw. Errata note AVR.54, titled "System May Experience Inability to Boot or May Cease Operation," explains that the Atom C2000 Low Pin Count bus clock outputs (LPC_CLKOUT0 and LPC_CLKOUT1) may stop functioning. Permanently.

Major Security Flaw May Exist in Intel CPUs
To fix this flaw, kernel memory would need to be even more isolated from user processes, but there's a catch. It appears that the flaw exists in part because kernel-userland memory sharing allows systems to run more speedily, and stopping that sharing would decrease CPU performance.

This speed dampening would vary by system, but could slow systems down by as much as 30 percent.

Intel Chips Have a Major Design Flaw and the Fix Means Slower PCs | News & Opinion | PCMag.com
Although nobody outside of Intel knows the specifics, the flaw is thought to be so serious it could allow any software, even a bit of JavaScript running in a web browser, to access and steal data stored in the protected kernel memory. So that includes your passwords, login keys, or any files that happen to be cached when unauthorized access occurs.

The vulnerability alone is bad enough, but the fix makes the situation even worse. Closing the security hole made possible by the chip design flaw will result in a significant performance hit to each system. Current estimates suggest that performance hit could be as high as 30 percent. You read that right, once your system is patched it may run 30 percent slower for certain tasks.

the high-end Core i7 part is $20 higher than initial Kaby Lake pricing; the Core i5 sits $15 higher. This move is likely designed to cover the additional costs of the silicon along with avoiding cannibalizing the existing Kaby Lake models. Cache sizes are higher and base clocks are lower, comparatively, but the single-core max frequencies are higher. TDP is also higher, presumably to support the higher core count.

The Skylake-X Mess Explored: Thermal Paste And Runaway Power
Intel is pushing the envelope once again with a factory-overclocked Xeon processor doing double-duty as a high-end desktop masterpiece. We're getting the sense, though, that the revered Core architecture can't be pushed much further. Everything works well enough this time around, at least. And if Intel hadn't chickened out and put thermal paste between its die and heat spreader, there might have been a happier ending for everyone involved in this story.

According to Computerbase.de, the “Platinum” models are expected to correspond to Intel’s highest-end Xeons (the current E7 family). Instead of introducing an E7v5 (Skylake-based), Intel will transition to this new naming scheme instead. Xeon Gold chips are thought to be certified for up to two-socket operation, while Xeon Platinum cores will operate in four-socket systems.

Flow batteries are a type of rechargeable battery which essentially function as rechargeable fuel cells. Typically, they’ve only tended to be used for larger scale applications, like storing power from solar panels or wind turbines for later use. The new battery design from the research team is dramatically smaller, measuring in at 1.5mm thick, and generates 1.4 watts of energy per square centimeter of battery surface (0.4 watts of which goes toward pumping the liquid to the battery), which the team claims is a record relative to the battery’s size.
