Twitter’s new button lets you accept private messages from your website | TechCrunch
Twitter today continues to push forward with its increased emphasis on its messaging feature, with the rollout of a new button for websites that allows visitors to privately message an individual or company directly. The feature, now one of several website buttons available, follows the company’s recent test of a change to brands’ customer support profiles’ that encouraged users to direct message, not tweet, at the business’s Twitter account.

In that case, a new “Message” button appeared on the profile on mobile – taking over the full space where “Tweet to” and “Message” used to live side-by-side. Early testers included big names like Apple, Uber, Beats, Activision, and others.

Today’s update, meanwhile, is about making it easier to message a business from the web.

Since 2008, we’ve received tens of thousands of these applications. Collectively, they provide insights into the ideas smart people are working on and how it’s changed over time. We’ve never talked about these publicly before.

But recently, we commissioned Priceonomics (YC W12) and their data studio to analyze eight years’ worth of our anonymized application data. After breaking the applications down into keywords, they calculated the percentage of applicants that mentioned any given term.

The Web Giants Are Raising The Performance Bar On Everyone - ReadWrite
Trying to make sense of all these moving parts, how they all fit together and what they all mean, is difficult. However, it’s clear is that the tech-industry titans are vying for control and trying to mold a version of the future Internet that’s most conducive to their individual businesses. 

This involves doing everything in their power to increase their share of the online advertising pie by generating more advertising-related revenues themselves, and in many cases, sucking the blood out of news sites, most of which are already dealing with declining profit margins.

Which behemoths will prove victorious in these battles? No one knows for sure, but we do know a fast end-user experience is their ultimate strategic weapon.
