The sudden death of the website | TechCrunch
When the first website ends, the dominoes will fall fast. This will have a positive impact on most companies in transforming how they conduct e-commerce and provide customer care. For Google, however, this will be devastating.

Twitter’s new button lets you accept private messages from your website | TechCrunch
Twitter today continues to push forward with its increased emphasis on its messaging feature, with the rollout of a new button for websites that allows visitors to privately message an individual or company directly. The feature, now one of several website buttons available, follows the company’s recent test of a change to brands’ customer support profiles’ that encouraged users to direct message, not tweet, at the business’s Twitter account.

In that case, a new “Message” button appeared on the profile on mobile – taking over the full space where “Tweet to” and “Message” used to live side-by-side. Early testers included big names like Apple, Uber, Beats, Activision, and others.

Today’s update, meanwhile, is about making it easier to message a business from the web.

The Startup Zeitgeist · The Macro
Since 2008, we’ve received tens of thousands of these applications. Collectively, they provide insights into the ideas smart people are working on and how it’s changed over time. We’ve never talked about these publicly before.

But recently, we commissioned Priceonomics (YC W12) and their data studio to analyze eight years’ worth of our anonymized application data. After breaking the applications down into keywords, they calculated the percentage of applicants that mentioned any given term.

So let’s review the data, starting with a simple example.

The Web Giants Are Raising The Performance Bar On Everyone - ReadWrite
Trying to make sense of all these moving parts, how they all fit together and what they all mean, is difficult. However, it’s clear is that the tech-industry titans are vying for control and trying to mold a version of the future Internet that’s most conducive to their individual businesses.

This involves doing everything in their power to increase their share of the online advertising pie by generating more advertising-related revenues themselves, and in many cases, sucking the blood out of news sites, most of which are already dealing with declining profit margins.

Which behemoths will prove victorious in these battles? No one knows for sure, but we do know a fast end-user experience is their ultimate strategic weapon. They are using consumers’ and businesses’ increasing appetite for speed and convenience to undermine each other as much as possible. In the process, multiple industries are being forced to change, and some risk losing the game entirely. No one likes being forced into a position, but in this case, like it or not, stellar performance has advanced from being a must-have-to-win to a must-have-to-survive characteristic.

Too Many Social Media Sharing Buttons Make Your Site Less Social - Search Engine Journal
On a basic level, social media sharing buttons generate free advertising. The more people who share, the more visibility your blog receives—and if all goes well, the more referral traffic your site will enjoy. And if sharing buttons are so wonderful, why wouldn’t websites want as many share buttons as possible?

As it turns out, there are a few important reasons why too many social media sharing buttons do more harm than good. Here are a few tips to figure out if it’s time for some spring cleaning on your site.

CPG Brand Website Usage Study - Accenture
Accenture, comScore, and dunnhumbyUSA study shows direct correlation between CPG brand website usage and in-store purchase behavior.

CPG manufacturers have invested millions of dollars in their brand websites and social media presence, yet they struggle to show how their brand websites are influencing brand purchases in stores.

To address this challenge, Accenture, comScore and dunnhumbyUSA collaborated on a groundbreaking study to help CPG executives better understand the link between consumers usage of brand websites and their brand purchases in retail stores. Specifically, the research was designed to accomplish three objectives:

*Quantify the retail sales value of the visitors to various brand websites.
*Identify the most valuable features and content that can be provided on CPG brand websites.
*Provide insights and opportunities to further explore online destinations where Internet marketers can best reach their brand buyers and prospects
