YouTube Is Launching a New Creative Suite for Marketers to Make Better Ads – Adweek
The Creative Suite will focus on delivering insights for brands (with the Video Experiment and Video Creative Analytics tools) and storytelling (with its Director Mix and Video Ad Sequencing tools). The company said it is working with a number of agencies and brands including brands like 20th Century Fox (for The Greatest Showman) and Kellogg’s which have already started to use these tools.

Video Experiments will allow brands and agencies to test campaigns in real time to measure things like awareness, ad recall and purchase intent. The tools allow brands to make tweaks to the campaigns before the official launch to maximize the effectiveness of the creative. YouTube’s Brand Lift tool measures those analytics after a campaign has ended. YouTube realized it could help creatives prior or during a campaign if it could extend those capabilities to creatives earlier in the process.

While YouTube users have been able to schedule prerecorded videos for years, until now there hasn't been a seamless way to build anticipation for those videos. But there's a feature being launched at VidCon 2018 called YouTube Premieres that's going to change that. This tool will let creators hype future on-demand videos with a dedicated public landing page that they can link to before a video is live on their channel. Right now, YouTube creators tend to go on other social sites like Instagram or Twitter to let their followers know about incoming videos, but there wasn't a way for them to direct people to a specific page on YouTube -- not for prerecorded videos, anyway.

At an event in Los Angeles this afternoon, YouTube announced its own streaming TV service. The offering will mix live-streams of broadcast and cable television programming with the wealth of online video found on YouTube. It’s the latest in a surge of over-the-top (OTT) services trying to woo consumers who never bought into traditional cable television.

The service will exist as a standalone app. For $35 a month, subscribers get all four major networks — ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC — and roughly 35 cable channels. That price covers six accounts, so each member of the household can have a personalized account that offers recommendations tuned to their taste. The kids will have to draw short straws, however, as you can watch up to three concurrent streams at a time.

Facebook has been busy with the app updates, as of late. In recent months, it has added new sections for finding nearby Wi-Fi, meeting new people, checking the weather, and more. Now, it’s rolling out yet another addition to the “More” menu inside the Facebook app: City Guides. A potential challenger to Foursquare, Facebook’s guides will show you a list of cities and which of your friends visited, along with various recommendations of places to go and things to do.

When you click into an individual city, you’ll see a row of rounded profile icons of your friends who have visited there. Tap on each one, and a list of the places they’ve been – like hotels, restaurants, attractions, and other businesses – will appear. This data is presumably being extracted from users’ check-ins and Facebook posts.

On Thursday, the company announced that it will let publishers show ad breaks in the middle of their prerecorded videos for the first time.

More Facebook pages will also be able to show ad breaks during their live broadcasts, a feature that had been previously limited to a small group of handpicked publishers, including Business Insider.

These ad breaks are essentially mini-commercials that may run after a video has played for 20 seconds and must be at least two minutes apart. WhatsApp could put the brakes on Snapchat’s international growth with today’s launch of WhatsApp Status, a new tab for sharing decorated photos, videos and GIFs that disappear after 24 hours. It’s another Facebook-owned Snapchat Stories copycat, but the twist is that it’s end-to-end encrypted like WhatsApp messaging.

WhatsApp tested the feature for beta users in November, and now the Status tab is rolling out worldwide on iOS, Android and Windows Phone. WhatsApp is now starting to roll out its own version of Stories with an update to its Status feature. Launching now in the Netherlands and France, the feature will eventually be live in all the countries where the messaging app is available.
The feature, which the company has been experimenting with for months, is officially billed as a long overdue update to WhatsApp Status (that's the feature that previously allowed you to set a quick "text only" status visible to your contacts within the app). Club Penguin may be shutting down, but there’s a new social network for kids arriving today from LEGO. The company known for its physical blocks and building sets is launching LEGO Life, a safe, online space where kids can share their LEGO creations, and connect with a broader community. Available as an iOS and Android application, the social network is aimed at those under the age of 13, with protections in place to ensure the site remains child-friendly.

According to the company, the idea for the network came about by watching how kids shared their creations in the LEGO Club Magazine’s “Cool Creations” section, and posted stories and photos of their LEGO building to the company’s message boards. Visual Discovery on Pinterest Is Now Easier With These Three New Features – Adweek
Pinterest CEO Ben Silbermann and co-founder and chief product officer Evan Sharp introduced three visual discovery products at the social network’s San Francisco headquarters Wednesday: Lens, Shop the Look and Instant Ideas.

Lens, which is rolling out in beta on Pinterest’s iOS and Android applications, allows users to incorporate their devices’ cameras into their searches by tapping the camera icon in the Pinterest app and taking a photo of something, after which they will see recommendations for similar objects or “ways to bring the idea, recipe or style to life.”

Pinterest said Lens also delivers search results that display the subject in finished projects, offering as an example room-décor ideas with similar clocks when a photo of a clock is searched for.

Instagram is testing multi-photo albums for everyone
It likely won't be too long until we can all share more than one photo in an Instagram album. The company is reportedly testing out the feature in its latest Android beta release, Droid Life reports. Multi-photo albums was something Instagram previously reserved for its "carousel" ads for the past year. The closest thing regular users got to that was creating a collage with the company's Layout app, or making do with an ephemeral Instagram Story.

Tumblr Adds Snapchat-Like Stickers and Filters for Photos and GIFs – Adweek
Starting today, Tumblr looks a little bit more like Snapchat.

The Yahoo-owned site is launching a mobile feature today that overlays stickers and filters on top of photos and GIFs that users share.

Users can add more than 100 stickers—including decals of dogs, rainbows and sunglasses—to posts through Tumblr's flagship app and its GIF-making iMessage app. There are also a handful of colorful filters that can be added to posts and Tumblr says it plans to add more stickers each month. In February, Valentine's Day and Black History Month-themed packs will be available.

Snapchat may or may not become mobile television for younger generations. But the app's parent, Snap Inc., which appears to be on the cusp of an IPO, wants TV advertisers to think about it that way and spend their money accordingly.

Facebook Advertisers Now Have More Ways to Create Retargeted Ads | Adweek
Now the social giant is expanding the format to let advertisers target more Facebook users based on their web activity. For example, someone who has been looking for red dresses across multiple retailers and also likes Facebook posts and pages about dresses could automatically be served an ad for a red dress. In the past, advertisers have only been able to single out folks who specifically looked at a product on their website or mobile app.
"The top feedback and most common type of feedback that we hear is, 'Hey, can you help me drive sales beyond people visiting my website and app, including new customers?'" said Maz Sharafi, director of product marketing at Facebook. "What we can now do is say, 'Who else is potentially in-market for these products?'"
Similar to how marketers already use dynamic ads, advertisers first upload a catalog of products that they would like to promote. They then select an audience of people they'd like to target—say, women in the United States. Facebook's algorithms then look at traffic patterns on retailers' mobile sites and apps as well as information on Facebook to automatically serve a targeted promo to users.

Powered by voice recognition software, it takes the hassle out of transcription while making it easy to edit the subtitles it suggests. The biggest change: Facebook Pages will now have the ability to go live via web browser — and according to Facebook comments to Mashable, regular profiles will soon follow. Targeted ads can be annoying, but they're much worse when they're insensitive to tragedies in your life. If you lose a child, seeing ads for children's products is understandably traumatic. Facebook wants to change this. It's testing a feature that lets you hide potentially upsetting ads. The option is currently restricted to blocking ads for alcohol and parenting products, but the social network tells Ad Age that it may add other topics if users report concerns.

It's part of a larger change to ad preferences that should make them easier to use than before. They're both more visual and remain consistent whether you view them from your settings or the ad itself.

Snapchat Adds Shazam, Group-Chat Features | Variety
Snap Inc.’s Snapchat has packed a bunch of new features into its latest app, including the ability for users to chat with up to 16 friends and integration with Shazam.

The social-media player cut a deal with Shazam, under which users can identify a song by pressing and holding on the Snapchat camera screen when music is playing nearby. Once songs are ID’d, they appear in the “Settings” menu — letting users access Shazam content and send their music and artist discoveries as Snaps to their friends.

Snapchat’s new Groups features can be created while sending a Snap, or when you’re making a new Chat. When friends are present in a group chat, their names are displayed at the bottom of the conversation. Group chat messages are deleted by default after 24 hours, and Snaps sent to a Group can only be opened and replayed once by each recipient.

Facebook copies Snapchat geofilters with camera 'frames' - Business Insider
Starting Thursday, Facebook users in select countries will be able to make custom camera "frames" that others can overlay over photos and add to their profile pictures. The frames will also be available in Facebook's Snapchat-like camera messaging interface that's currently being tested in Ireland.

Facebook's camera frames work almost identically to Snapchat's geofilters, a competing app that Facebook has already begun to clone aspects of in Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.
