YouTube Is Launching a New Creative Suite for Marketers to Make Better Ads – Adweek
The Creative Suite will focus on delivering insights for brands (with the Video Experiment and Video Creative Analytics tools) and storytelling (with its Director Mix and Video Ad Sequencing tools). The company said it is working with a number of agencies and brands including brands like 20th Century Fox (for The Greatest Showman) and Kellogg’s which have already started to use these tools.

Video Experiments will allow brands and agencies to test campaigns in real time to measure things like awareness, ad recall and purchase intent. The tools allow brands to make tweaks to the campaigns before the official launch to maximize the effectiveness of the creative. YouTube’s Brand Lift tool measures those analytics after a campaign has ended. YouTube realized it could help creatives prior or during a campaign if it could extend those capabilities to creatives earlier in the process.

YouTube creators can hype prerecorded videos with 'Premieres'
While YouTube users have been able to schedule prerecorded videos for years, until now there hasn't been a seamless way to build anticipation for those videos. But there's a feature being launched at VidCon 2018 called YouTube Premieres that's going to change that. This tool will let creators hype future on-demand videos with a dedicated public landing page that they can link to before a video is live on their channel. Right now, YouTube creators tend to go on other social sites like Instagram or Twitter to let their followers know about incoming videos, but there wasn't a way for them to direct people to a specific page on YouTube -- not for prerecorded videos, anyway.

Snapchat Is Rolling Out a New Viewability Score to Help Advertisers Know If People See Their Video Ads – Adweek
Snapchat isn’t going as far as letting the Media Rating Council independently audit its ad clients’ campaigns six weeks after the ANA called for all major digital platforms to do so. Today, Snap, Snapchat’s parent company, is starting to offer select advertisers a viewability score—validated by measurement firm Moat—that’s designed to meet the MRC’s guidelines for whether videos warrant chargeable impressions. The score will become widely available on June 5.

It’s the latest in a surge of over-the-top (OTT) services trying to woo consumers who never bought into traditional cable television.

The service will exist as a standalone app. For $35 a month, subscribers get all four major networks — ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC — and roughly 35 cable channels. A potential challenger to Foursquare, Facebook’s guides will show you a list of cities and which of your friends visited, along with various recommendations of places to go and things to do.

When you click into an individual city, you’ll see a row of rounded profile icons of your friends who have visited there. These ad breaks are essentially mini-commercials that may run after a video has played for 20 seconds and must be at least two minutes apart. To accomplish the task, Facebook trained an ever-fashionable deep neural network on tens of millions of photos. Google and Facebook partner for anti-fake news drive during French election | TechCrunch
The first round of the French presidential election is due to be held in April. So it’s no coincidence that Google and Facebook are stepping up efforts locally to combat the circulation of so-called fake news as the democratic drum beat cranks up — partnering on a collaborative initiative aimed at combating the spread of disinformation online.

Google, via its News Lab arm, is backing a collaborative verification platform called CrossCheck, that will launch in France on February 27 and continue through the French elections — bringing together a raft of local media companies to power a website where members of the public can report content they believe to be dubious, or ask questions for CrossCheck’s media partners to respond to. The tech companies will be providing data and tools to help spot potential viral fakes pertaining to the election.

Snapchat Just Opened Up Its Ads API to Let All Big Brands Buy In – Adweek
Nearly eight months after debuting its Ads API (application programming interface) at Cannes and 16 weeks after putting the system into a limited beta test, Snapchat is now letting all marketers buy campaigns on its automated platform. Up until now, marketers for 100 companies—including Gatorade, Nissan, Unilever and McDonald’s—had been taking the API for a spin.

Expect to see case studies emerging from those tests in the coming weeks, and it will be interesting to hopefully learn about not only the positive outcomes but also the platform’s problem areas. Snap, Snapchat’s parent, has been consistently pushing the idea that its full-screen video product, called Snap Ads, performs wonders partly due to users typically having their sound on.

Tumblr Adds Snapchat-Like Stickers and Filters for Photos and GIFs – Adweek
Starting today, Tumblr looks a little bit more like Snapchat.

The Yahoo-owned site is launching a mobile feature today that overlays stickers and filters on top of photos and GIFs that users share.

Users can add more than 100 stickers—including decals of dogs, rainbows and sunglasses—to posts through Tumblr's flagship app and its GIF-making iMessage app. There are also a handful of colorful filters that can be added to posts and Tumblr says it plans to add more stickers each month. In February, Valentine's Day and Black History Month-themed packs will be available.

Snapchat Is Now Selling Ads Against Nielsen’s TV-Like Ratings System – Adweek
Snapchat may or may not become mobile television for younger generations. But the app's parent, Snap Inc., which appears to be on the cusp of an IPO, wants TV advertisers to think about it that way and spend their money accordingly.

Today, the Venice, Calif.-based company revealed a partnership with Nielsen's mobile Digital Ad Ratings (mDAR) unit, giving brands the ability to buy guaranteed Snapchat audiences by age group and gender. For the most part, it's the same kind of system—from ordering to measuring the results—that marketers are accustomed to with Nielsen's TV offerings.

Facebook Stories puts a Snapchat clone above the News Feed | TechCrunch
Instagram put a dent in Snapchat by placing its own version of Snapchat Stories atop its feed, and now Facebook is doing the same. Today Facebook launched Facebook Stories in Ireland on iOS and Android, with plans to bring it to more countries in the coming months. The feature lets you share ephemeral photos and videos in a slideshow that disappears 24 hours later. The little circles to watch friends’ Facebook Stories appear in its main app above the feed so you can’t miss them.

Twitter itself will take Vine’s place as a social network for short videos. To prep for tomorrow’s Vine shutdown and rebirth as Vine Camera, Twitter now automatically loops all videos shorter than 6.5 seconds. That’s not just clips posted from Vine Camera, but any tiny video, including ones saved from other apps like Snapchat.

Snapchat launches universal search to simplify navigation | TechCrunch
Snapchat just made it much easier to navigate the app and find friends, groups, Discover publishers and Our Stories with a universal search bar that’s always accessible at the top of the app. Launching today for some people on Android and rolling out soon to all iOS and Android users, the search bar lets you dig out of Snapchat the best content and conversations.

The company tells TechCrunch the interface is designed for speed, so you can locate what you’re looking for and keep snapping. It might not be a coincidence that last year Snapchat was said to have acquired mobile search startup Vurb, which mysteriously shut itself down recently.

Facebook Advertisers Now Have More Ways to Create Retargeted Ads | Adweek
Now the social giant is expanding the format to let advertisers target more Facebook users based on their web activity. For example, someone who has been looking for red dresses across multiple retailers and also likes Facebook posts and pages about dresses could automatically be served an ad for a red dress. In the past, advertisers have only been able to single out folks who specifically looked at a product on their website or mobile app.
"The top feedback and most common type of feedback that we hear is, 'Hey, can you help me drive sales beyond people visiting my website and app, including new customers?'" said Maz Sharafi, director of product marketing at Facebook. "What we can now do is say, 'Who else is potentially in-market for these products?'"
Similar to how marketers already use dynamic ads, advertisers first upload a catalog of products that they would like to promote. They then select an audience of people they'd like to target—say, women in the United States. Facebook's algorithms then look at traffic patterns on retailers' mobile sites and apps as well as information on Facebook to automatically serve a targeted promo to users.

Facebook Launches Dynamic Product Ads for Data-Minded Retailers | Adweek
Businesses will be able to upload their product catalogs and let Facebook generate ads for items while targeting them to users. These product ads could rival Google's shopping ads, which have evidently performed well for retailers in search.
In a blog post, Facebook explained further: "Advertisers can curate ads as they see fit. For instance, they can highlight products that were viewed on their website/mobile app or showcase best-selling products. Or they can create a multi-product ad that highlights the different benefits of a single product."

Facebook is going to start showing ads in the middle of its videos and sharing the money with publishers - Recode
Facebook wants to show more ads to people who watch its videos and start making money for the people who supply it with those videos.

Industry sources say the social network is going to start testing a new “mid-roll” ad format, which will give video publishers the chance to insert ads into their clips after people have watched them for at least 20 seconds.

Facebook adds automatic subtitling for Page videos | TechCrunch
Facebook has launched a free, automatic video captioning tool to all US English Facebook Pages. TechCrunch and some other Pages only recently began seeing the quietly launched option, though Facebook responded to our inquiry saying it began rolling out the feature in October.

Powered by voice recognition software, it takes the hassle out of transcription while making it easy to edit the subtitles it suggests. That’s critical since our early tests showed frequent transcription errors. This is somewhat expected considering the tool is free and operated entirely by computers. And with time as Page admins manually enter corrections, Facebook’s system will surely improve.

Facebook Live update allows video to be streamed from browsers
The biggest change: Facebook Pages will now have the ability to go live via web browser — and according to Facebook comments to Mashable, regular profiles will soon follow. Users everywhere will be able to broadcast live anywhere, anytime, from any device with an internet connection and a camera.

Until now, going live required either a phone running the Facebook app or, for publishers especially, specialized streaming camera rigs. With the update, Pages will have the option to broadcast directly via a laptop or desktop's webcam.

The Ten Year Anniversary of the Apple TV – Stratechery by Ben Thompson
On January 9, 2007, ten years ago today, Steve Jobs took the Macworld stage and introduced the Apple TV.

Facebook test lets you hide upsetting ads
Targeted ads can be annoying, but they're much worse when they're insensitive to tragedies in your life. If you lose a child, seeing ads for children's products is understandably traumatic. Facebook wants to change this. It's testing a feature that lets you hide potentially upsetting ads. The option is currently restricted to blocking ads for alcohol and parenting products, but the social network tells Ad Age that it may add other topics if users report concerns.

It's part of a larger change to ad preferences that should make them easier to use than before. They're both more visual and remain consistent whether you view them from your settings or the ad itself.

Twitter Makes It Even Easier to Broadcast Live Video
Starting on Wednesday, users will be able to start broadcasting video right from Twitter, without needing to use Periscope, the video streaming service Twitter acquired two years ago. Users won’t even need to download Periscope’s app at all, the company told Fortune.

This is Twitter’s latest move to integrate the two services, after adding in January the ability for users to embed and watch live Periscope videos on its platform.

Snapchat Adds Shazam, Group-Chat Features | Variety
Snap Inc.’s Snapchat has packed a bunch of new features into its latest app, including the ability for users to chat with up to 16 friends and integration with Shazam.

The social-media player cut a deal with Shazam, under which users can identify a song by pressing and holding on the Snapchat camera screen when music is playing nearby. Once songs are ID’d, they appear in the “Settings” menu — letting users access Shazam content and send their music and artist discoveries as Snaps to their friends.

Snapchat’s new Groups features can be created while sending a Snap, or when you’re making a new Chat. When friends are present in a group chat, their names are displayed at the bottom of the conversation. Group chat messages are deleted by default after 24 hours, and Snaps sent to a Group can only be opened and replayed once by each recipient.

Facebook copies Snapchat geofilters with camera 'frames' - Business Insider
Starting Thursday, Facebook users in select countries will be able to make custom camera "frames" that others can overlay over photos and add to their profile pictures. The frames will also be available in Facebook's Snapchat-like camera messaging interface that's currently being tested in Ireland.

Facebook's camera frames work almost identically to Snapchat's geofilters, a competing app that Facebook has already begun to clone aspects of in Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.
