Spotify abandons attempt to buy SoundCloud
Spotify has abandoned plans to acquire rival SoundCloud, as the music streaming company gears up for an IPO next year.

The companies were in advanced talks on a deal in September, the FT reported, as Spotify looks to compete with Silicon Valley titans such as Apple and Amazon in the competitive streaming market.

However, the deal has fallen through because Spotify did not want to slow its path towards a flotation with the costs and licensing agreements needed to buy SoundCloud, according to someone familiar with the matter.

Twitter has invested in music streaming service SoundCloud - Recode
Twitter has invested around $70 million in the music service, as part of a round that should end up in the $100 million-range, according to sources familiar with the deal. The round is expected to value SoundCloud at about $700 million — the same value that investors placed on the company in 2014, when it raised $60 million; since then it has also raised a debt round.

Twitter Moments become tweetable playlists thanks to SoundCloud | TechCrunch
An upgrade to Twitter’s Moments feature, originally designed to offer users a curated “best of Twitter” experience, now turns Moments into a source for tweetable playlists. Through an ongoing partnership with music streaming service SoundCloud, Twitter Moments will now allow curators to create and share Moments containing SoundCloud’s audio cards – that is, music tracks embedded in a tweet.

It’s too bad you can’t use this feature for yourself, though.

To be clear, SoundCloud’s audio cards had been available for playing within Twitter’s timeline since 2014. But they had not yet worked within the Twitter Moments feature. The cards are a special format that lets curators attach music or any other audio content to a tweet. Then, when a user clicks on the “play” button in the tweet, the content simply starts streaming.

By allowing audio cards in Moments, curators can put together groups of audio-enabled tweets, making for a tweetable playlist of sorts.

To SoundCloud, Love Dave — Airplane Mode
You can slice it, package it, or spin it however you like, but the bare fact is that you’re making money off of songs you aren’t paying for. Worse, you’re doing it while perpetuating an air of exclusivity around the concept of making money. All while you’re pretending to be a friend to the little guy. There’s nothing artist-friendly about this approach.

Why SoundCloud Will Be Worth More Than Spotify | TechCrunch
While SoundCloud usually gets much less media buzz than Spotify, you wouldn’t know it based on their numbers. First, while both SoundCloud and Spotify have large user bases, Spotify has only 75 million active users compared to SoundCloud’s more than 175 million monthly listeners.

Why does SoundCloud have twice as many registered users? Spotify is more of a paid service for streaming music. The total number of users matters less to Spotify than how many of them are willing to pay. In contrast, SoundCloud is less focused on monetization (for now) and can afford to provide free content in the name of growth.

Second, SoundCloud has much better unit economics than Spotify. Why? SoundCloud’s producers, the users uploading content, are there to build a following and are not as focused on monetization. The agreement with Universal simply wards off any potential lawsuits over copyright infringement. In contrast, Spotify pays out 80 percent of its revenue to content license holders.

Popular and Free, SoundCloud Is Now Ready for Ads -
Now SoundCloud has decided it is time to grow up. On Thursday, as part of a new licensing deal with entertainment companies, SoundCloud will begin incorporating advertising and for the first time let artists and record labels collect royalties. Eventually, it plans to introduce a paid subscription that will let listeners skip those ads, as they can with Spotify and other licensed services.
In many ways the move is a reaction to industry pressure to license content and produce revenue. It also reflects SoundCloud’s complex relationship with record labels, which use the service to promote new releases and even hunt for new talent but have been irritated by their inability to make money from SoundCloud’s millions of listeners.

Soundcloud’s State of Transition - Future Media Lab – Inventing the Future of Media
Unfortunately this love affair maybe coming to a slow demise as Soundcloud is undergoing growing pains as it tries to juggle the record labels, the artists, and the fans all at the same time — especially when it comes music copyrights. Soundcloud recently introduced a solution to ensure copyright protection was adhered to called ‘Audible Magic’; a technology that identifies and automatically removes unlicensed songs uploaded by users.

It's Not Me It's You: Why So Many Artists Want To Break-Up with Major Labels | NOISEY
By holding back records, attempting to control the artist's marketing aesthetic, and not putting music in the right places, major labels are sometimes making a fickle audience lose interest in their acts. Artists used to sign with an indie if they wanted to be cool and a major if they wanted to make money. But that's been turned on its head in recent years and there are a new generation of artists for whom integrity, independence, and a healthy bank balance don't have to be mutually exclusive.

What’s Next for Twitter? — Building a Startup — Medium
The elite accounts with 10,000+ followers on Twitter are counted equally with the smaller accounts with 18 followers and zero tweets when it comes to metrics like monthly active users. This is simply unfair for Twitter, but works well for Facebook because most Facebook accounts are roughly the same when it comes to friends. Twitter’s extremely popular accounts add much more value to the network than the accounts that don’t post anything, yet they are essentially being treated as equals. This is why we can’t simply look at monthly active users to gauge Twitter’s popularity. Let’s also remember just how important Twitter is to the journalism industry. Almost every digital publisher is using Twitter to promote their content, and many have been successful with this approach because of the amount of people that see Twitter as a news source. Where the journalists and new corporations go, the people will go.

99% Invisible-117- Clean Trains by Roman Mars on SoundCloud - Hear the world’s sounds
In just about every movie set in New York City in the 1970s and 80s there's an establishing shot with a graffiti-covered subway. For city officials, train graffiti was a sign that they had lost control. So, starting in the early 70s, mayors of New York vowed to eradicate graffiti. First, Mayor John Lindsey formed the first anti-graffiti task force. He also re-classified graffiti from a nuisance, like littering or loitering, into a crime. In 1984 David Gunn became President of the New York City Transit Authority. Systemically, train line by train line, Gunn took the subways off the map for graffiti writers. While they were fixing it, they didn’t allow any graffiti on it. If graffiti artists “bombed” a train car, the MTA pulled it from the system. Even during rush hour. May 12, 1989 was declared the official day of the city's victory over train graffiti. But of course train graffiti has never stopped. There is still subway graffiti—it just never leaves the train yards. Artists—many of them from abroad—paint subway cars knowing full well that they will get cleaned before they're ever seen by the public.
