Ashley Bischoff on Twitter: "Serious question: Is it appropriative for white people to use grammatical constructions or pronunciations from African American English? cc @languagejones @sociologyjones @R_A_Hancock #AAE"
(You had asked—)
“Serious question: Is it appropriative for white people to use grammatical constructions or pronunciations from African American English?”

(And from there, Language Jones replied:)
“I voted it depends, here is the elaboration: AAE is about Speech community, not melanin (or whatever biological markers we use to prop up the fiction of race). There are plenty of non-AA people who speak AAE, and whether it’s OK is about fluency, ‘nativeness,’ and acceptance by their speech community. What bothers me, and I think most other people who speak AAE; is when people who did not grow up speaking it, and who do not interact with the culture, attempt to adopt it as a fashion.

“But I’m very reluctant to say that (to use an example I know of) a white kid raised by working class black parents in North Philly doesn’t get to use the speech of her community and the only way of speaking she knows.

“However, if you’re asking if it is appropriative for a white speaker of a white dialect (because they grew up in white neighborhoods and went to white schools) to use it, then…probably? But it depends on how well they do it and in what context, and how it is received.

“If they’re participating in an AAE speech community, correctly (by the standards of that community), and it’s well received, then maybe it’s fine. But that’s a big risk for anyone who didn’t grow up with AAE.

“I guess what I’m getting at is that it’s up to the AAE Speech community, which is predominantly but not exclusively black, to decide based on actual circumstances, but it’s probably an unwise move for most white people to try to speak AAE if they didn’t grow up with it.”

I Went Marie Kondo on My Twitter Follows to Spark Some Joy Into My Feed - Motherboard
“But with all the buzz about Marie Kondo lately—the organizing expert whose KonMari method of cleaning your life of things that don’t ‘spark joy’ recently became a Netflix series—I’ve been feeling a little exposed. Maybe it’s time I address my digital clutter, and perhaps doing so will spark some joy back into my Twitter feed.

“Tokimeki Unfollow, a Glitch app made by designer Julius Tarng, helped me do this. It confronted me with every person I follow and their latest tweets, one at a time, and asked me to consider whether they still bring me joy. If so, I can keep them. If not, it’s unfollow time. There’s also a third option for adding them to a list, if those choices feel too extreme.”

“My line on prenups if either of you have any money is that EVERYONE in the US who gets married already has a prenup, it’s just ‘whatever the state I live in uses as a default’ so go read it and if you think you and your partner can come up with something better/fairer, do so.”

James M. Fraleigh on Twitter: "Ten days into 2019, I have multiple active projects in house, and a deadline coming Monday. So I’m taking today off. Why? 1/"
(A thread from James on taking days off—)
“Ten days into 2019, I have multiple active projects in house, and a deadline coming Monday. So I’m taking today off. Why?

“In 2018, I tried to resolve that anytime I worked 10 days in a row, I’d take the 11th off, whatever the workload. This … did not work out.

“Decided to try it again in 2019. I backdated the count to Dec 31, on which I worked. I immediately felt a sense of delight at the approaching day off.

“I count days of partial work for this, bc I’ve come to accept I enjoy working quiet, email-free, early Saturday and Sunday mornings. But if I don’t trade off those weekend hours for time off later, the editorial edge dulls.

“So if I haven’t been taking weekend days off, or if I’ve worked in federal holidays, maybe this will be a way to ensure the rest, reading, and chores that can get kicked along the to-do list actually benefit me and my clients.”

Why is Twitter Displaying the Wrong Image for Your Post?
(This post also includes a link to a Twitter Card Validator that “allow you to confirm which image Twitter will display before you tweet your link.” So that seems like it could be handy.)

“Twitter relies on Twitter Cards to display an image. Twitter Cards allow you to display an image, title, and description when you share a link on Twitter, rather than only the link.

“Your site needs to support Twitter Cards in order for an image to display.

“In WordPress, there are multiple ways to do that. Here are three options:

“• Yoast SEO plugin, in the Twitter tab of their Social section
“• Jetpack plugin, as part of the Sharing module
“• Add your own HTML markup in the head section for your page or post (best done in the functions.php file)

“The first two options are the easiest.”

(On paying conference speakers—or at least covering their travel expenses:)
“Some things need to be said. I deeply love community/non-profit events, local groups and meet-ups — all run on incredible efforts of humble, kind people working hard to bring people together. These are incredible people doing incredible work. This message isn’t for them.

“At the same time, I’m very sad to see a huge number of commercial events (with ticket prices beyond $450) that expect speakers to speak for free and don’t cover flights and accommodation. That’s a toxic, broken culture with a fundamental lack of respect for time, effort and work.

“Yes, venues are expensive, and yes, so is catering, and yes, speaking budget are limited. But before spending thousands on food and roll-ups and notebooks and pins, allocate decent budgets for coaching and helping speakers, especially new speakers in the industry.

“Setting up a conference is a wonderful thought, but you need a financial plan of what it costs and how much you can spend. It’s not acceptable to push the costs over to speakers, and it’s not OK to expect them to cover their flights for ‘exposure’.

“On a personal note, I’ve been speaking a lot over all these years (Vitaly), yet I rarely get any consultancy projects from ‘exposure’ on stage, and more often than not the time away from family and company costs much more than a honorarium provided. You decide what’s OK for you.

“It’s remarkable how every now and again organizers take pride in providing you with a free Platinum Pass that grants access to all the talks and tracks (which apparently costs $2500) yet unwilling to cover more than 1 night accommodation or cover flights.

“Dear speakers, it’s not OK not to be paid at commercial events. Don’t submit proposals to conferences with a high ticket price that wouldn’t cover your expenses. Come up with a fair honorarium for your time, and if possible make exceptions for non-profits and community events.

“Dear organizers, respect your speakers. No fancy bells and whistles required; no fancy speaker dinners or speaker gifts. But always offer to pay speakers, even if it isn’t much, and always cover their expenses first. Help new speakers grow. Their time, work and efforts matter. ❤️”
