excellent tips, eg Many potential contributors think they're not good enough to contribute to your project: invite them to do a specific task personally.
Validated backups give you the freedom to do what's needed.
Writing a library is a good way to enable cross-project collaboration.
For many newcomers, documentation is a gateway in the FOSS community.

This tool provides a sysadmin-friendly command line interface to Amazon Glacier, turning Glacier into an easy-to-use storage backend. It automates tasks which would otherwise require a number of separate steps (job submission, polling for job completion and retrieving the results of jobs). It provides integration with git-annex, making Glacier even more useful.

Crossfilter is a JavaScript library for exploring large multivariate datasets in the browser. Crossfilter supports extremely fast (<30ms) interaction with coordinated views, even with datasets containing a million or more records; we built it to power analytics for Square Register, allowing merchants to slice and dice their payment history fluidly.

redis - Google Code
Redis is a key-value database. It is similar to memcached but the dataset is not volatile, and values can be strings, exactly like in memcached, but also lists and sets with atomic operations to push/pop elements.

interesting piece on what next for education. Not sure about the pedagogical brilliancies of video and "JIT info with immediate application" but love the bubble observation (net present value of an education = its cost, so the producers are now sucking all the value from a tertiary education ... so it's a bubble which will burst as incomes readjusted in coming years)

The problem with open-source revenue models | The Open Road - The Business and Politics of Open Source by Matt Asay - CNET News
Creators of o/s are supported by the most fragile source of revenue, maintenance $. He asserts companies are increasingly looking to OS as commons to be used but not replenished. I'd like to see evidence of that assertion, and more detail on the buzzword heavy sentence that comprises his thought on what should happen.

A fresh model for software maintenance | Irregular Enterprise |
Very interesting proposal! Dennis Howlett says that clients are getting screwed by vendors playing the maintenance game (Oracle=30% earnings), and by third party consultants (overcharging, doing crappy work). He suggests three change: treat customers as individuals; take control of 3rd party distribution and implementation channels; certify customers to become self-sufficient for the routine crap.

Could governments effectively subsidize open-source development? | The Open Road - The Business and Politics of Open Source by Matt Asay - CNET News
"Who will pay for open source in the future?" asks Matt Asay. His theory is that "as open-source buyers grow comfortable with open source they will stop spending money on open source". This post is devoted to demolishing the straw-man argument that government should fund it.
