The parallels between America's financial crash and Japan's are greater than you might think. Both had crazy property markets; Japan had a stock market meltdown while USA has the financial industry; both cut interest rates. Japan was afflicted by deflation, which hasn't happened in the USA because of inflation (um, yay?). I agree with the think-tank member quoted, who says that Japan should have cleaned up its financial system if it wanted an economic recovery. The same is true of the USA, IMHO.
