Best Practices are Stupid | Nan Palmero | a mySA.com blog
october 2011 by frogpond
One of the tips he shares is the importance of looking outside your industry to solve problems. He goes further in his book about changing the way you innovate and think about innovation. One surprise I found in the book is to stop using a suggestion box. Stephen goes to explain that they frequently don’t work, waste time and the ideas can oftentimes be answers to questions that no one asked.

Google+ Hangouts Adds Screen Sharing, Google Docs Collaboration, and More [Video]
september 2011 by frogpond
We've always been keen on Google+ Hangouts, but a recent update provided some extras that make the experience even better. Now you can share your screen, collaborate in Google Docs, and even draw together in SketchUp. Additionally, the Hangouts API provides developers with the ability to integrate Hangouts into their own web apps. This could become a very interesting way to not only collaborate on work, but also share media and play games with other people across the web. More »

Google Launches Android Open Accessory Development Kit Based On Arduino
may 2011 by frogpond
As seen in the streaming of Google IO 2011, physical computing and interactive enviroments are one of the main topics opening the conference. The Android Open Accessory Kit is going to allow Android related devices receive data from different sensors (just via USB, for now).
The Android Open Accessory Development Kit (ADK) provides an implementation of an Android USB accessory that is based on the Arduino open source electronics prototyping platform, the accessory’s hardware design files, code that implements the accessory’s firmware, and the Android application that interacts with the accessory. The hardware design files and code are contained in the ADK package download.
The board is based on the Arduino Mega2560 and Circuits@Home USB Host Shield designs, since it communicates to the phone in its “accessory” mode. You can get the custom library / firmware to make it run & test with the shield pictured on top.

Can I also recommend using a creative combination of amateur tools to create a professional-looking screencast? For example, our team used Screenflow to "shoot" and edit small clips, Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.ne... to record and edit the voice-over, Prezi (http://prezi.com/) to record elegant motion captured clips with graphics, a little bit of Powerpoint, Photoshop, etc. for static slides and such, and the result comes out a thousand times better than a straight-up screencast.

february 2010 by frogpond
David Heineimeier Hansson, the creator of Ruby on Rails and partner at 37signals in Chicago, says that planning is guessing, and for a start-up, the focus must be on today and not on tomorrow. He argues that constraints--fiscal, temporal, or otherwise--drive innovation and effective problem-solving. The most important thing, Hansson believes, is to make a dent in the universe with your company.

Very nice roundup on incentives.
Financial rewards only boost performance on mechanical. When cognitive skills are essential, the have negative influence.
[...] intrinsic rewards are far more effective than extrinsic rewards for motivating creative, innovative behavior. Of course anyone who has run a creative organization has always known this but what Dan will no doubt do is get through to the 99% of leaders running companies who still believe that the carrot and the stick is the right way to promote innovation

via Thomas: Orcale and accenture sponsored some very slick videos - explaining what they mean with "Enterprise 2.0".
Besides videos there's supposed to be case study material - and I found an Oracle ECM blog this way, see http://blogs.oracle.com/fusionecm/
And as one thing leads to another there is a three-part post there, which dealt with the "Tangible Benefits of E 2.0":
Snippet: "In Part 1 of this short Tangible Benefits of E2.0 series, we covered the bad news around E2.0 and ROI and Adoption.
In Part 2 we covered the good news from the research and theory angle. We saw that scholarly and researched proofs are emerging to prop up the soft benefit claims of better collaboration, increased team efficiency, and increased ability to innovate. These kinds of soft proofs are still emerging as THIS article on 7 ways E20 will cut costs demonstrates."
Will add these posts onto the diigo-Linklist as well, see inside then for highligting as usual.

Jeff Jarvis and Umair Haque: new business models | AccMan
may 2009 by frogpond
In this 4 minute video, author Jeff Jarvis and economist Umair Haque discuss the style and shape of new business models emerging from the digital age. They contrast the command and control models of the industrial era with the notion of building communities out of which value emerges. Part of that process involves the notion that it may not be clear what a business model will look like in the early stages of business development and that it may well change as the business finds what works (success) and what doesn’t (failure.)

Disruptive Innovation durch die DNA des Web 2.0 » BACKonTheFUTURE - Business 2.0 Blog
march 2009 by frogpond

Improvisations _ Creating a culture of innovation
march 2009 by frogpond
W. L. Gore & Associates has been called “the most innovative company in America” by Fast Company magazine –and has been named to that magazine’s current Fast 50 list of innovative companies. It’s consistently been listed as one of the best places to work. And its corporate culture de-emphasizes hierarchy so much that its current CEO became CEO only after her peers nominated her. It’s no wonder that W.L. Gore’s current CEO, Terri Kelly, thinks the company’s corporate culture has a lot to do with its ability to innovate.

Academic Productivity » How to run an invisible wiki
february 2009 by frogpond
Since I started to work with wikis I realised how effective a wiki engine can be to invisibly power a website. In this post I’d like to share some tips on how I do this.
As I contribute to the development of the open source wiki engine I refer to in the following examples, this is obviously my software of choice (hint). There is however a range of excellent free software you can use to this aim (provided they have good ACL support and allow you to easily modify the look and feel of the output via CSS, as I’ll show later).
Let me first clear one major confusion about what wiki software is for. One common misunderstanding about wiki engines is that they can only be used to run actual wikis (or web-based collaborative projects such as the Wikipedia). Wiki engines are, on the contrary, simple and flexible tools for maintaining and managing different kinds of non-wiki websites, without bothering with FTP sessions.

Komplexitätsmanagement als zentrale Erfolgsstrategie in Projekten
november 2008 by frogpond
