ownCloud has come a long way since the last time I gave it a look. What I’ve covered in this post doesn’t touch everything that ownCloud can do — such as its WebDAV support. But if you’re looking for an online storage and syncing app that keeps your files under your control, ownCloud is definitely worth a close look.

Google announces Android Open Accessory standard, Arduino-based ADK -- Engadget
may 2011 by frogpond
Google's really not leaving any stone unturned at IO today -- it's now also announced a brand new Android Open Accessory standard, which promises to effectively be its own version of "Made for iPod." That means that any accessory designed using the API (which could even be something like an exercise bike) will be compatible with any Android phone or tablet -- running at least Android 2.3.4 or 3.1, that is. What's more, Google is also making a reference hardware design dubbed an "ADK" available to developers and, get this, it's based on Arduino.

SharePoint 2010 for Collaboration: Something Old, Something New, Something Blue | Messaging News
december 2010 by frogpond
SharePoint 2010 includes a lot that is new and improved on the collaboration side, and the people I speak with at organizations are very keen to get their hands on the new capabilities. As with any technology, features and functions are merely opportunities for doing work in a different way, so IT organizations and departments need to create strong engagement strategies for exploring fitness to task with their business department clients. Once opportunities for improving business activities have been identified, they then need to cultivate various user adoption strategies to ensure that the hoped-for-value translates into delivered-value.

Open Source: Should Your Company Be a Core Developer of Your Collaboration Tools? : Business Collaboration News «
december 2010 by frogpond
One of the benefits of using open source tools is that you can customize them to be used in ways that help your organization.
If you want to customize an open source tool, it may be simply a matter of handing it off to your IT department or hiring outside help. But what to do after you have a customized version of your software available?
The Open Source Ecosystem
The way that most proponents of open source tools hope you’ll move forward from that point is by sharing the customizations and changes your team has made and making them available for other users of that particular piece of software. Within your organization, there may be some arguments against doing just that. Some are legitimate: stripping out any information that would allow your competitors to learn about how you work from your customized software might be impractical, making it harder to protect your organization’s confidential information. Others may see the changes you made as proprietary, and that offering them for free is a waste of company resources.
Making those customizations available, however, can help you improve upon your chosen tool. The more users and developers are working on a given open source project, the less likely it is that development will stop — making it a useful investment for any organization relying on open source software.
The Core Developer Question
You could simply release your changes and customizations to the community that creates a particular tool, or you could take an active role in developing the tool in question, providing resources and help. There are certainly some benefits in taking a leadership role. You can help guide the development of your software, making it possible to implement key features that you may want. But taking a leadership role does take resources and time that you might otherwise dedicate elsewhere. It’s likely a question that only members of your organization can decide.
Of course, it’s very easy to get involved with most open source projects. The typical open source community can always use a few extra hands or a few extra dollars. If you make it clear that you’re interested in getting involved for the long haul, such communities will always find a way to bring you in and make use of whatever you can provide them with. It’s just a matter of deciding to get involved.
Does your organization actively support the open source projects it uses?

Weekend Project: Analyze Your Network with Wireshark | Linux.com

Wireshark is an open source network packet analyzer. Without any special hardware or reconfiguration, it can capture live data going in and out over any of your box's network interfaces: Ethernet, WiFi, PPP, loopback, even USB. Typically it's used as a forensics tool for troubleshooting network problems like congestion, high latency, or protocol errors — but you don't want to wait until your network is in trouble to learn how to use it. This weekend, why not take a look at your network traffic, and learn how to use Wireshark to your advantage?

Business Process Model and Notation unter Ubuntu » Von Roman Hanhart » ubuntublog.ch
october 2010 by frogpond

Why Open Source Software / Free Software (OSS/FS, FOSS, or FLOSS)? Look at the Numbers!
october 2010 by frogpond
This paper provides quantitative data that, in many cases, using open source software / free software (abbreviated as OSS/FS, FLOSS, or FOSS) is a reasonable or even superior approach to using their proprietary competition according to various measures. This paper’s goal is to show that you should consider using OSS/FS when acquiring software. This paper examines market share, reliability, performance, scalability, security, and total cost of ownership. It also has sections on non-quantitative issues, unnecessary fears, OSS/FS on the desktop, usage reports, governments and OSS/FS, other sites providing related information, and ends with some conclusions.

june 2010 by frogpond
OStatic:
As Steven Vaughan-Nichols notes, Hewlett-Packard, the number one PC seller on the planet is trending toward becoming a significant Linux distributor. In acquiring Palm, HP also acquires the Linux-based WebOS, and if HP is smart, it will pursue a very open strategy with WebOS, possibly on mobile phones, and possible on iPad-like tablet devices.
[..]
Google, too, has demonstrated how powerful Linux can be when it’s not branded as Linux. Android is a hugely successful mobile OS, based on Linux. Google’s upcoming Chrome OS is Linux-based and was developed with the help of the Canonical team. Increasingly, Linux is having an impact on desktop and mobile technology users when it isn’t called Linux.
Was macht eigentlich Microsoft?

Easy flickr uploads with Postr
may 2010 by frogpond
For those that use Flckr, it’s always easiest when you have a simple tool that allows quick and painless file uploading. Although logging onto the web site and using the built-in Flickr uploader isn’t difficult, when you have a number of images, or when you upload frequently, this can be a real hassle. So having a stand-alone tool for this purpose is always nice. There are plenty of these tools for the Windows desktop. But what about Linux? You bet there are. There are Flickr uploaders for KDE for GNOME and everything in between.
In this article I am going to introduce you to the GNOME Flickr uploader Postr. It’s simple to install and simple to use.
