So if you believe in the principles behind UNIX and Open Source, please don't write software which requires any of the Gnome/KDE and DBus API. Writing X11 programs with xcb and proper RPC APIs like SUNRPC or Thrift should be more than good enough. So, please support choice and freedom by implementing programs the right way instead of the Linux/Gnome/DBus way.

Weekend Project: Learning Ins and Outs of Arduino | Linux.com
Arduino is an open embedded hardware and software platform designed for rapid creativity. It's both a great introduction to embedded programming and a fast track to building all kinds of cool devices like animatronics, robots, fabulous blinky things, animated clothing, games, your own little fabs... you can build what you imagine. Follow along as we learn both embedded programming and basic electronics.

What Does Arduino Do?

Arduino was invented by Massimo Banzi, a self-taught electronics guru who has been fascinated by electronics since childhood. Mr. Banzi had what I think of as a dream childhood: endless hours spent dissecting, studying, re-assembling things in creative ways, and testing to destruction. Mr. Banzi designed Arduino to be friendly and flexible to creative people who want to build things, rather than a rigid, overly-technical platform requiring engineering expertise.

A Case for Open-Source GPU Drivers | Linaro - Open source software for ARM SoCs
So what is the lesson here?  On the community side, we may have the greater challenge.  We can argue until we’re blue in the face about all of the great benefits of community development, but we can’t indemnify graphics IP vendors against lawsuits when the details of their designs are revealed in open-source drivers.  This obviously isn’t guaranteed to happen, but it only has to happen once to foul up the works.  On the vendor side, with a little help, trust and understanding you get a Linux driver stack, lots and lots of testing on a variety of platforms and an active community supporting your platforms.  This isn’t a free lunch, though, and it is important to seed the development community with engineering resources; this improves the community as well as the software it produces.

OStatic:

As Steven Vaughan-Nichols notes, Hewlett-Packard, the number one PC seller on the planet is trending toward becoming a significant Linux distributor. In acquiring Palm, HP also acquires the Linux-based WebOS, and if HP is smart, it will pursue a very open strategy with WebOS, possibly on mobile phones, and possible on iPad-like tablet devices.

[..]

Google, too, has demonstrated how powerful Linux can be when it’s not branded as Linux. Android is a hugely successful mobile OS, based on Linux. Google’s upcoming Chrome OS is Linux-based and was developed with the help of the Canonical team. Increasingly, Linux is having an impact on desktop and mobile technology users when it isn’t called Linux.

Was macht eigentlich Microsoft?

First open a terminal and go to the correct directory to check a downloaded iso file:

*

Then run the following command from within the download directory.

Get the best virus scanner for Linux | TuxRadar Linux
Winning the middle ground

Ultimately, BitDefender had the performance and accuracy needed to win. It wasn't the fastest on test, but neither was it the slowest. Changing the options makes a big difference to the performance, but we're of the opinion that if you want to run antivirus software, you should run it at the most paranoid level available. BitDefender competently found all the virus files, identified them and suggested appropriate action, so it's difficult to see what more it could do. It was simple to use and the updates to the virus database seem to be regular. The command line app is configurable and versatile too, so you can easily set up regular scans.

With strong competition from Beagle, especially in the number of search options, Recoll just manages to cling on to the top spot. Forcing the user to index the system manually is actually a clever design. For anyone who's convinced that desktop search tools eat up too many resources, this offers the opportunity to index the system at a convenient time. It should therefore help Recoll to attract users who'd normally distance themselves from desktop search tools.

Defining the keywords to look for and avoid for each search helps Recoll accurately locate the correct file each time. Other tools should also consider adopting this feature.
