As a company, we want to do reliable backups on the cheap. By “cheap” I mean in terms of cost and, more importantly, in terms of developer’s time and attention. In this article, I’ll discuss how we’ve been able to accomplish this and the factors that we consider important. Backups are an insurance policy. Like conventional insurance policies (e.g. renter’s), you want piece of mind that your stuff is covered if disaster strikes, while paying the best price you can from the available options. Backups are similar. Both your team and your customers can rest a bit more easily knowing that you have your data elsewhere in case of unforeseen events. But on the flip side, backups cost money and time that could be better applied to improving your product — delivering more features, making it faster, etc. This is good motivation for keeping the cost low while still being reliable.

In der engeren Auswahl hatte ich Lösungen von Q-NAP und eben Synology. Entscheidend am Ende war für mich der Preis. Ich wollte für mein NAS ohne Festplatten nicht mehr als 400€ zahlen. Die DS411 (DS steht übrigens für DiskStation und die 4 für max. 4 Festplatten und 11 für das Jahr der Herstellung) passte mit ca. 380€ preislich sehr gut in den Rahmen. Die Hardware-technisch vergleichbare Lösung von Qnap – die Qnap TS-419P+ lag mit ca. 425€ leider ein wenig drüber. Vorteil bei der Qnap wäre auf jeden Fall das Gehäuse mit Display und die Möglichkeit, die Festplatten per Hot-Swap einzubauen bzw. zu wechseln. Da ich aber nicht vorhabe, so schnell meine Festplatten-Konfiguration zu ändern und es auch bei der DS411 nicht wirklich unpraktisch ist, habe ich mich neben anderen Gründen gegen die Qnap- und für die Synology Lösung entschieden.

This is why once a month I take my own backups of every online service that I consider important. The resulting XML files or whatever may not be in a terribly nice form, but if an online service happens to lose my data at least I’ll have something that I can reconstruct from.

Diese Art der Sicherung ist nicht wirklich zu empfehlen, da die Image-Datei die gleiche Größe wie die gesicherte Partition hat. Daher ist es sinnvoller, das Image zu komprimieren. Der folgende Befehl erstellt ein komprimiertes Image der Partition /dev/hda1 und speichert dieses in die Datei image-compress_hda1.img im Heimatverzeichnis.
