J.R.R. Tolkien's Legendarium: "And What Happened After" by thearrogantgemu
Summary: “My dear Mr. Baggins, you cannot possibly imagine I have brought you across the boundaries of the sundered world, bending every law of gods and men, over land and over sea and through the fathomless heights, for your health? Well, I did, of course I did, and I’d do it again. But it was not for your own good only that I brought you here. I have been on this world a very long time, Mr. Baggins, and if there is one thing that I have learned about the Wise and the Great, it’s that they benefit from the company of hobbits, and it’s the wisest and greatest who have most need of them.”

Lord of the Rings: Rider of the Mark by ZeesMuse
Summary: What's a HorseLord to do when his King and his best friend decide he needs more than a horse to keep him company? And nooooo... running off to hide in Mordor is NOT an option!
Reccer's Notes: The facetious summary is from the fic's entry, but the story contains strong characterization of Gamling and the folk in his life. Gamling's honor deserves a place on the list of characters, too, and this long read is worth the time. The author creates her Riderverse with aplomb, a grand sense of fun and romance galore, plus there's action. It's a good example of how a fandom grabs hold of one by the, er, culet, to let inspiration flow.

Lord of the Rings: The Long Road Home, by Scribles

Bound by his promise to a sick man, Faramir keeps the secret of his brother's survival. But as secrets are wont to do, the truth comes out eventually and Aragorn journeys north to bring Gondor's prodigal son home.
Reccer's Notes: This is a fandom classic from the days of the Henneth Annûn Story Archive. (Well, I consider it a classic, but I was never involved enough in the fandom to know if other people did.) It's long, it's an interesting idea, it's got great worldbuilding for "what might have been happening off-screen and off-page," great characterization of canon characters, and interesting OCs.

Summary: There is an elf who has lived in Aglarond for nigh on five hundred years before Grilka's birth. He stays always near the inner caverns and the halls of dead dwarf-lords, and the younger dwarrows know him for his songs and sad stories, his queer habit of walking the caverns in twilit sleep and speaking to the ferns that grow by the inner ponds.

Reccer's Notes: This is, bar none, my favorite Gimli/Legolas fic. Laura JV does an exceptional job of exploring and worldbuilding differences between dwarves and elves, and especially how those differences might be lived out by Gimli and Legolas. Also, this is one of the few mutual pining fics I've read where it doesn't annoy me, where it feels right and is a natural extension of the characters.

Predominantly book-verse.
Reccer's Notes: Does it show I'm on a LotR roll?^^ I liked the slow burn and the care this fic has for the characters and the setting: Legolas seeing his friend after so long, all the details of the dwarvish life in Erebor, the image of the bare-chested dwarves singing at the forge, the discussions and uneasiness... Summary: When the Grey Company escapes from the Paths of the Dead with an army of ghosts at their heels, Legolas believes that everyone who entered the Dark Door has emerged again unharmed.

He's wrong.

Some wounds cannot be seen.

Reccer's Notes: This fic is incredibly well crafted and has an unterly amazing Legolas point of view, so very elvish... I loved reading it, the care in the writing and all the details, the attention of Legolas for Arod, and then the whole hellish ride with the Death following, his growing worry for Gimli and the ways they ultimately managed to connect, to help each other... LOTR/Narnia: a home for every season by dirgewithoutmusic
Let's talk about a Susan who never moved on, who buried her family in English soil and spent the rest of her life trying to find her way home. She did not believe lions were kind, but she always remembered a bow in her schoolgirl hands.

She looked in every old wardrobe she came across. It was casual, everyday – the first day in a new lecture hall, she checked the back of the coat closet. Friends had her over for Christmas dinner and she excused herself to go the bathroom, checked every cabinet and closet, and then headed back in for pudding. She went home with a cute boy she met in a smoky little pub and she checked his wardrobe before she headed home the next morning, heels in hand.

She also went to college, got a political science degree she had to fight for. She got a byline in the local paper, a few ladies' magazines, then a larger regional publication. She had mimosa brunches with friends. She read detective novels, never touched fantasy, and finally one day she stepped through an old stone archway barely thinking about it and–-

She was standing in a treeless plain, all yellow grass and blue blue skies.

(Susan Pevensie goes to Middle-Earth)

Reccer's Notes:
Susan finds a portal and stumbles into Rohan, in time to join the Muster on its way to the Pelennor Fields. She bonds with Eowyn, seeks out the Ents and eventually becomes Entspeaker in the councils of Men, makes herself useful. But she never stops looking for Narnia, looking for home. And then one day she opens a wardrobe door and cold air wisps out...

This is a wonderful piece about family in all its forms. You'll cheer for the ending.

Lord of the Rings: Triptych by Lbilover
Summary: Three views of a long-awaited reunion.
Reccer's Notes:

This truly lovely tale takes place the morning after Sam arrives on Tol Eressëa, as seen first by Bilbo, then Sam, and finally Frodo. It reaches out and grabs your heart, breaks it in two, and then gives it back, whole once again. The beauty of the mental images created here by the author is further enhanced by the accompanying artwork created by Omelton.
As time passed the wounds from knife, sting, tooth and his long burden ceased to pain him.
Peace and tranquility gradually entered his soul; he could look inside and see not some loathsome Gollum-like creature possessed by greed, but a simple hobbit who had done his best against impossible odds.
Finally he forgave himself for failing. He saw beauty in the world around him. He even learned to laugh again.
But Frodo never grew accustomed to sleeping alone.

This is, quite simply, a beautiful, beautiful tale!

Lord of the Rings: Spirit by Cara Loup
Summary: On the other side of the Sea.
Reccer's Notes: "Sam reuniting with Frodo in Valinor" fics are practically a subgenre of the Frodo/Sam fandom. There are a lot, and some really wonderful ones. But 'Spirit' accomplishes something that not many do: it paints a realistic and believable scenario for Sam and Frodo's reunion, making it joyous and yet awkward, with unresolved questions and emotions that need to be aired and addressed before the two hobbits can truly be happy.

Cara's writing is utterly exquisite, with a dream-like quality and an incredible use of language, especially in describing the natural world. I find that I often need to read Cara's stories multiple times to appreciate them fully and take in the many layers of meaning. But I always find rich rewards in doing so.

Lord of the Rings: The Elf Prince and the Gardener by Melanie Athene
Summary: Sam makes the journey to Tol Eressëa, but Frodo is not the hobbit he used to be.
Reccer's Notes:

This wonderful Frodo/Sam story takes place when Sam finally follows Frodo to Tol Eressëa after 60 years apart. It is written from Sam's POV, as he arrives and discovers that the hopes and dreams that he has held in his heart for so long appear destined to remain unfulfilled. Based on an incredibly gorgeous drawing by trilliah, the story is filled with angst, misunderstandings and, ultimately, the beginnings of their joyful lives together. A very happy-making fic, indeed!

Summary: On Tol Eressëa, Gimli tries his hand at a spot of matchmaking. Part 1 of the Tol Eressëan Tales, an occasional series of AU humour fics set, somewhat unsurprisingly, on Tol Eressëa sometime during the early centuries of the Fourth Age.
Reccer's Notes: The first of a hysterically funny series set on Tol Eressea in which Gimli tries to play matchmaker and bring Frodo and Sam together. His numerous attempts result in mayhem and misunderstandings (and possibly some white hairs for Legolas). All four stories in this series are gems. Lord of the Rings: Endurance Beyond Hope by Frayach
Summary: Fourteen years after Frodo's departure from the Havens, Merry is visited at Brandy Hall by Sam and his family and [Sam] discovers a well-spring of both grief and hope that he and Frodo will be reuniting beyond the grey curtain of this world.
Reccer's Notes: This is one of those stories that takes your heart, smashes it into a million bits and then slowly starts to put it back together again. I consider this story almost without peer in the Frodo/Sam fandom. Few stories are as exquisitely written, give such a strong sense of place and hobbit culture, or are as profoundly moving. Here is one small example of her writing:

Merry had been surprised to discover how much Sam seemed to love to write letters. They'd arrive regularly, painstakingly sealed with crimson wax, and their pages always smelling of fine pipeweed and the ethereal scent of Frodo's study - that unreproduceable mixture of old books and spearmint tea and Frodo himself. They were full of news, full of detailed descriptions of various projects, full of reports on his children and nieces and nephews. But they were also strangely whimsical and often contained inscrutable little rhymes and sketches of exotic flowers or bright-eyed animals peeking from holes or... seashells. Dozens of them of every size and pattern, their whorled tips so keenly detailed that Merry often found himself wondering if Sam had maybe, just maybe, gone back.

Just a beautiful, beautiful fic.

The Lord of the Rings: Letters Over the Sea by Gytha and Prembone
Summary: Sam sends a letter to Frodo in Tol Eressëa, and to both their surprise it is not only delivered but Frodo is allowed to write back. Thus begins a lengthy correspondence between the two hobbits, in which old grievances are aired, feelings made known, and comfort sought and given.
Reccer's Notes: Originally written back in 1999, this is generally considered to be the first Frodo/Sam fic and also one of the first LOTR slash fics ever posted to the Internet. Sadly, it is no longer archived anywhere, but you can find it, as I did, through the Wayback Machine (where the Fanwork Link will take you). This really is a seminal fic in my fandom, and 15 years later it holds up remarkably well. As the letters are written by two different authors each has its own tone and style, and they capture Sam and Frodo's voices beautifully. IIRC, Gytha and Prembone didn't set out to write a fic, but started the correspondence spontaneously, and that spontaneity gives the letters a lovely sense of reality.

Summary: The day before, Thorin was everything Bilbo had wanted in a boyfriend. The day after, he's anything but. Discovering your boyfriend torturing a man in the basement tends to have that effect. Bagginshield Mafia AU.
Reccer's Notes: Please, please mind the warnings on this one, because this is a dark modern AU with unsettling elements. Reccer's Notes: Dian Fossey-style study of the Elves of Mirkwood. It goes about as well as you'd expect. Should probably warn for some Elf death, as the humour gets rather dark at some points (on that note, one might want to read Dissection of the Common WoodElf, Telerius galadh by the same author first, which is also very funny, in a twisted kind of way).

The Lord of the Rings: The Cybersex Lives of Hobbits by Fennelseed
Summary: Imagine a Middle-Earth that has the Internet. Now imagine Frodo is playing with cybersex as a way to keep his mind off young Samwise. Still with me? Good...
Reccer's Notes: Fennelseed wrote some of the classic Frodo/Sam fics from the heyday of the fandom, and The Cybersex Lives of Hobbits is one of those. It has an undoubtedly improbable premise, but as usual Fennelseed pulls it off brilliantly. The story has the perfect balance of humor, smut and angst, and the reveal of the secret identities is wonderfully done. An entertaining read that will have you as hot and bothered as poor Frodo. :)

Discworld/LotR: Apples by The Amazing Maurice
Summary: It seemed to Shadowfax that the only constants in his life were swords and apples, and tall, robed people holding sticks.
Reccer's Notes: Discworld/LotR is probably among the most unlikely crossovers ever but in this story it works perfectly. It's got Shadowfax and Death and it's absolutely delightful and very sweet and silly.

The Lord of the Rings: Playing with Magic by Elycia
Summary: Sam tries to use a magical dwarvish recipe to get a Lover's Day kiss, but playing with magic can be dangerous!
Reccer's Notes: Frodo tries to help Sam with his courting, and of course it turns out the one Sam wants to court is Frodo. This story is charming, fun and wonderfully written, with terrific characterizations, abundant hobbity details, and a smidgen of angst. IOW, the recipe for a perfect Frodo/Sam fic. :))

The Lord of the Rings: Merry Wanderers of the Night by Igraine
Summary: A mythical creature has his eye on two unsuspecting hobbits and sends them some dreams they will not forget.
Reccer's Notes: Not quite your traditional Frodo/Sam fic, with an unusual matchmaker bringing them together. Igraine is one of the most gorgeous writers in the Frodo/Sam fandom. Her prose is lush, evocative, and filled with magic and sensual imagery. Here is one small sample: Now the other, he captures my attention, but I am wary of him. He sees deeper, he knows my name, it is written somewhere in one of those snap-shut books on the library shelf, gathering dust. I dance inside, carved in wood and printed in ink, stamped onto a page and shuttered, confined, I rattle the binding to be free.

Lord of the Rings: Ringbearer by Tiriel_35
Summary: It is possible to be your own worst enemy
Reccer's Notes: I've always felt that if Frodo had been able to forgive himself for claiming the Ring, he would have been able to begin the healing of mind & spirit that would allow him to remain in Middle-earth. Tiriel, with the help of Sam & Gandalf, allows him to do just that.

Lord of the Rings: In the Grey Twilight by Heidi Gamgee
Summary: The Quest bound Frodo and Sam together, but the return of peace blurred the lines of their love.
Reccer's Notes: This was the first Frodo/Sam fic I ever read, and my introduction to slash. It was my light bulb, my eureka moment, and it gave me something I wasn't even aware I needed so badly: an ending where Frodo and Sam aren't parted. Heidi Gamgee beautifully weaves canon and Tolkien's words with her own writing, and the result is one of the most emotionally true and deeply moving Frodo/Sam fics ever written.

Lord of the Rings: Many Aspects by Gillian
Summary: After the quest Sam finds out that Frodo is ill and takes him to Rivendell searching for a cure. There they meet an elven healer who offers them a possible solution.
Reccer's Notes: This has long been one of the most popular fics in the Frodo/Sam fandom, and it won't be giving anything away to say that it features mpreg. The thing about 'Many Aspects' is that many of us who don't normally care for mpreg (like me) still adore this fic. So, even if mpreg isn't your cup of tea, give it a go. Gillian presents a persuasive, logical case for the mpreg as a fix-it, and the characters' reactions aren't simplistic. They grapple with it (there's a hint of 'fuck or die' to the situation) and there is plenty of angst and drama along the way to a happy resolution. Gillian is a marvelous storyteller, and she'll sweep you right away.

LotR: Plain Speaking by ElderberryWine
Summary: The Gaffer's gardening advice proves useful; or the way a certain author would have ended LOTR if she could.

Reccer's Notes: If there is one thing Frodo/Sam shippers like to fix, it's Frodo leaving Sam and going into the West. Many of us far prefer Frodo to be healed and whole and remain in the Shire with Sam. Elderberry Wine's story fixes this in a beautifully simple and touching way.

Lord of the Rings: Legacy, by Anglachel
Summary: Ten days in Buckland as Bilbo tries to convince his relatives that Frodo belongs with him.
Reccer's Notes: There are quite a number of stories out there taking place in the Shire, most of them fairly idyllic. And in a fair number of those, Bilbo and/or Frodo are gay, and that's all fine with everyone. Anglachel does an excellent job portraying a different Shire, which brings in the attitudes of the English countryside the Shire was based on. The people and culture she writes about are so believable and three-dimensional, and their thoughts and actions ring true. In a world where what people say about you is almost as important as what's actually true, and gay people are Not To Be Trusted with impressionable youth, how can Bilbo get his nephew Frodo out of an abusive household?

I think today is going to be a day for dysfunctional family recs from me. Much as we all would prefer to live in a happy family, unhappy ones are so often more interesting to read about. Anglachel does an excellent job of writing this one.

Lord of the Rings: The Valley is Jolly by Canafinwe
Summary: When Thorin and Company arrived in Rivendell enroute to the Lonely Mountain, Elrond Halfelven did not offer aid in their endevours until their last night in his house. Why? Simply put, he was occupied with more pressing matters: 2941 was a very hard year.
Reccer's Notes: This is a Hobbit-era story centered upon the adoptive father/son relationship between Elrond and Aragorn as a child, and the love the two have for each other both pervades and motivates the story. There are two main plotlines in it, for the first half, Aragorn falls ill with a mysterious sickness and for the second half, Elrond fights at Dol Guldur.

The Lord of the Rings: Frodo-Lad: Lullaby by Mews1945
Summary: On his first night at Bag End, Frodo suffers homesickness.
Reccer's Notes: Mews1945's Frodo-Lad series contains some of the loveliest, most heartwarming stories about young Frodo Baggins and his adjustment to life at Bag End after his Uncle Bilbo invites him to move there. I chose this particular story in the series because it exemplifies what I love about her writing: warmth, tenderness, wonderful hobbity details and perfect pacing. But really, any story in this series is well worth your time. She writes family dynamics brilliantly.

The Lord of the Rings: Before Breakfast by Elanor Gardner
Summary: Frodo introduces Sam to other joys besides food in the Bag End kitchen.
Reccer's Notes: One of the classic Frodo/Sam first time fics. A perfect balance of love, angst, and hotness, with beautifully drawn characters. Elanor doesn't gloss over the issue of Sam working for Frodo, and that adds believability and tension to the story. Includes a gorgeous but definitely NSFW illustration.

Summary: Boromir seeks the lost road to Rivendell...and finds a new friend in Eomer of Rohan. Minor A/U.
Reccer's Notes: I hadn't expected to enjoy this story as much as I did. This adds more depth to the characterisations of both Boromir and Eomer; pointing out things I hadn't thought about, but ring true. Lord of the Rings: Dark Answers: Darker Questions by Christina
Summary: Set within the two weeks of Frodo and Co. vanishing from the Shire.

Peregrin Took and his friends have vanished and an ancient enemy has returned. Peregrin's father, Thain Paladin Took and the families of the missing Hobbits, separately, have only questions--but together they find some answers--but little comfort.
Reccer's Notes: Have you ever wondered what exactly the families of Pippin, Merry, and Sam thought when their sons first went away? So have I, although it's a POV that's rarely explored.

Christina builds her story quite well, with the families gathering clues to the mystery of their children's whereabouts. The author creates a level of tension in the text, where there reader feels the sense of urgency the parents have, despite the fact that we *do* know where the boys have gone. Not all questions are answered, and, even once some are, the sense of dread is never completely lifted. She also pays attention to particular character traits, such as class status and family interactions. Overall, a well-done, atmospheric, and original POV.

Lord of the Rings: Paths for the Dead by james
Summary: Pippin leaves Minas Tirith on his last journey. What he finds isn't precisely what he expected. Spoilers for all three books, plus a few appendices.
Reccer's Notes: James Walkswithwind is one of the best fan fiction writers--across all fandoms. In my opinion, this is her best work. Beautiful rendering of the changes that occurred to the hobbits in general, and Pippin in particular, across their journey. Although Post-Quest stories are common (and many of the best fics in this fandom take place in this era), James finds an original way to depict the internal struggle. The story is brief, because not a single word is wasted. I love how the story unravels around you, i.e. the reader doesn't quite know what is going on at first, but James builds it with such care that you understand everything at the moment the author wishes. Then, when you re-read it (as I've done several times), you see how the parts which were unclear at first make perfect sense now. This is one of the few stories which made me cry, and it takes quite a lot to make me weep (let me put it this way: I didn't cry at Return of the King). Certainly, "Paths for the Dead" is one of the Top Ten pieces of Lord of the Rings FPF that I've ever read. When you are done reading it, you may want to try James's other LOTR stories, esp. those that focus on Pippin, such as "Each Journey Begins," "Memory," and "Of All the Inquisitive Tooks." Lord of the Rings: In The Darkness by Demelza
Summary: The Ring belongs to Pippin.
Reccer's Notes: In my opinion, no challenge in this fandom ever produced as many brilliant fics as The One Ring Challenge, the basic idea of which was that someone other than Frodo was the Ringbearer (or, as a few people decided, that Frodo's personality were slightly different). In this AU, the Ringbearer is Pippin, and the concept of watching the results of arguably the most innocent character in Lord of the Rings be corrupted by the power of the Ring is truly frightening. Also, in turn, Pippin's way of corrupting others is also terrifying. Not a single word is wasted by the author as she(?) gets inside Pip's head. The saddest part is what Pippin makes Merry do in order to fulfill his (Pip's) own fantasties and poor Merry's reactions. The ending, too, shows how even love can be an instrument of evil. Creepy as hell, and definitely worth a look.

LOTR: Spirits Of The House by Altariel
Summary: The old year ends, Boromir has not returned, and Denethor contemplates mortality.
Reccer's Notes: This story takes "A Christmas Carol" and applies it well and spookily to Denethor. The author describes this as an AU in which Denethor lives, but we don't actually see that, we only see the seeds of it, and I for one would really like to see the working out of it as well. But even so, I loved this story, because she got Denethor so well, and I haven't forgiven Jackson for totally messing up Denethor in the movie. Here, she makes the good point that the Palantir was like an addiction; it wasn't just the negativity which had driven Denethor to despair and madness. And the style is very in keeping with LOTR.

Summary: A tale from Isildur's early life in Numenor, told from the perspective of his future wife.
Reccer's Notes: There is so much in this story. Lienilde's studies in the healing arts and her dreams for the future, political controversy on Numenor, a rapidly dividing society, faith and hope in a dying land, Isildur and his family as leaders of what is becoming more and more like a revolutionary sect, it all plays together. Summary: I am Gimli, Lord of Moria: I do not look back, I do not regret.
Reccer's Notes: This is part of newredshoes' series of AUs about different characters taking the One Ring. This is primarily a story about the corruption of power, and what kind of twisted world the Ring would have created in Gimli's hands. I like this series; the writing is poetic, and I especially like how the end of the story explores the idea of how Gimli's canonical admiration of Galadriel would have ended up twisted by the Ring's power.
