Innovation Award of Kering x Plug and Play
About:
"The Kering Sustainable Innovation Award is dedicated to accelerating sustainable innovation in the Luxury and fashion sectors in China. Inspired by Kering’s motto Crafting Tomorrow’s Luxury, Kering initiated this program – powered by its partner, Silicon Valley-originated VC Plug and Play – to identify promising change-making startups and technologies in Greater China.
[...]
in order to identify innovative solutions along the entire apparel value chain, from alternative raw materials to circular technologies to extend product life. From biodegradable glitter and fabrics made from algae to new ecological dyeing processes and breakthrough technologies for clothing recycling today Kering has given support to over 50 start-ups who have graduated from the Fashion for Good-Plug and Play Accelerator."

Focus:

1. Alternative raw materials: Solutions that could modernize or be replacements for leather, silk, other natural fibers, etc. Focus areas such as biotech solutions, bio-based plastics, new fibers, regenerative agriculture, etc.

2. Supply chain: Decreasing impacts in the supply chain through technologies that will reduce water, waste and chemical usage and improve production and energy efficiency. For example, low impact dyeing, new processes to customise or automate cut-make-trim, and solutions enabling supply chain traceability.

3. Retail & Use: Solutions that reduce the environmental impacts of retail processes. For example, efficient packaging, retail store energy management, etc. Also, new ways to increase the awareness of sustainable fashion among consumers and make this lifestyle more influential in the Chinese market. For example, omni-channel communication, social marketing, building brand transparency, etc. Also focusing on solutions to improve livelihoods for people working along the supply chain.

4. Circular economy: Transforming materials waste into new products and extending the lifecycle of existing products are powerful ways to reduce impact. For example, chemical recycling, mechanical recycling, repurposing and upcycling, re-commerce platforms, etc.

[...]

The jury is composed of individuals with extensive knowledge of the fashion, Luxury, entrepreneurship, sustainability and innovation fields. This jury includes Jinqing Cai, President of Kering Greater China; Burak Cakmak, Dean of Fashion at Parsons School of Design; Hung Huang, a writer and top media influencer; Ma Jun, Founding Director of the Institute of Public & Environmental Affairs; Katrin Ley, Managing Director of Fashion for Good; Susan Rockefeller, a well-known figure in the world of art, philanthropy and sustainability; Wang Shi, an entrepreneur focused on green construction, forest conservation, biodiversity, and climate change; Jane Zhen Wang, President of Erdos Cashmere Group; Guoxin Yin, Chairman of Chenfeng Group.

Launched together with Plug and Play on December 7th, 2018 in Beijing with Peter Xu, Executive Director and CEO of Plug and Play China. Other participants such as Carol Chyau, CEO of Shokay or Shaway Yeh, Founder of YehYehYeh.

About:
"Real businesses make products and sell them for a profit. They focus on customers, revenue and profitability not investors, valuations and the next fundable milestone. Real businesses prioritize their customer’s needs over their customer’s eyeballs. They have a functioning business model, not a believable financial model. Real businesses want to stay in business, not run for the exit. They create their own source of funding and don’t have to ask anyone for permission to exist. We believe real businesses make really great investments."

Mostly tech or tech-enabled industries. Their main terms are basically these two components: an equity option and profit sharing.

* Equity Option *

Only if or when you decide to raise additional capital or sell your business do we become shareholders of your company. In short, our investment will remain non-dilutive until you choose otherwise. To break this down:

If you raise $500,000, or more, in a preferred equity round, our investment converts into preferred shares at the new round's pre-money valuation.
If you sell, we convert into common shares at the pre-determined percentage.

* Profit Sharing *

Should you choose to run your business profitably, you never sell or raise more capital, we have the right to participate in cash distributions on a monthly basis, after month 36 from the time of the initial investment.

The amount of distributions will be based on the greater of Net Revenue or of Net Income."

Additionally, two important notes:

"Cash distributions are capped at 3x max the initial investment, e.g. if you raise $500,000 with a 10% equity option, cash distributions are capped at $1,500,000.
If you pay back the 3x in 3 years or less, the option is halved, e.g. if you raise $500,000 with a 10% equity option and pay back $1,500,000 in 3 years or less, the equity option becomes 5%.

Start-ups shouldn't try to be unicorns—they should be zebras
Intro:
"The current technology and venture capital structure is broken. It rewards quantity over quality, consumption over creation, quick exits over sustainable growth, and shareholder profit over shared prosperity. It chases after “unicorn” companies bent on “disruption” rather than supporting businesses that repair, cultivate, and connect."

Excerpts (slightly modified by HAG to include non-internet companies too):
"Unicorns stand for exponential growth instead of sustainable prosperity in case of Zebra [...] monopoly vs plurality [...] competition vs cooperation [...] more vs enough/better [...] quantity-metric vs quality-metric [...] customer acquisition vs customer success"

Common challenges facing which zebra companies are facing:

"1. The problem isn’t product, it’s process.
(help institutions adopt, deploy, and measure the success of innovation, apps or otherwise)

2. Zebra companies are often started by women and other underrepresented founders.
(start 30 percent of businesses, yet receive only 5 percent of small-business loans and 3 percent of venture capital)

3. You can’t be it if you can’t see it.
(lack heroes to emulate, so they default to the “growth at all costs” model)

4. Zebras are stuck between two outdated paradigms, nonprofit and for-profit.
(existing imperfect structures like hybrid for-profit/nonprofit, Public Benefit Corps, B-Corps, L3Cs can be prohibitively expensive)

5. Impact investing’s thesis is detrimentally narrow and risk-averse.
(mostly limited to verticals like clean technology, microfinance, or global health)"

E-commerce and crowdfunding: why are they the same in China?
Intro:
"As long as laws and regulations are not changed to promote further diversity in crowdfunding, the industry will very likely focus on products that have already proven their feasibility. This is unlike in the West, where platforms such as Kickstarter or Indiegogo can promote projects even before their first proof of concept. Entrepreneurs in China can therefore see in crowdfunding an alternative to venture capital in scaling up, or use it as a way to test their markets."

Excerpt:
"avoid too much regulatory scrutiny ... the two major Chinese e-commerce players (Alibaba and Jingdong) entered the market, while no e-commerce company has crowdfunding activities in the West. Both had already solved the trust problem through the development of third-party e-payment solutions for e-commerce purposes (e.g. Alipay)."

Can Fintech Startups Carry Out Crowd-Funding in Hong Kong?
Excerpts:
" In view of the maturation of Fintech (Financial Technologies) ecology, the concept of crowd-funding is appealing to the general public as an option for start-ups to raise funds on web or mobile based platforms. The two areas of financial innovation that have seen strong growth in recent years are:
1. equity crowd-funding
2. peer-to-peer lending (P2P lending)

HK's Securities and Futures Commission (“SFC”) names risks:
- Default or failure of the investment project or business
- Illiquidity and dilution of stock value
- Platform failure
- Fraud
- Information asymmetry and lack of transparency
- Cyber security
- Illegal activities
[...]
Some studies predicted that the global investments in Fintech may surge from US$12 billion in 2014 to over US$46 billion in 2020.
[...]
- HK Government will set aside HK$2 billion to set up an Innovation and Technology Venture Fund for co-investing in local technology start-ups with private venture capital funds on a matching basis
- HK$200 million to launch a Cyberport Macro Fund for investment in its ICT start-ups"

The Dawn of China’s Entrepreneurial Age
Excerpts:
"The quality of Chinese innovation is increasing, the funding environment is improving, particularly for early-stage companies, and the Chinese government is doing everything it can to make China Inc. a force to be reckoned with.
[...]
traditional industries such as banks and commodities companies still dominate Chinese public markets, while newer, high-growth sectors such as technology, communications, and media are tiny by comparison. People paying a high multiple for companies with a relatively small earnings base.
[...]
For the time being, money is flowing, the Chinese government has committed to innovation as a national policy, M&A provides a viable exit route, and Chinese consumers are eager for the next, new thing. Whether this will prove another golden era for entrepreneurialism in China, only time will tell, but in the meantime, China’s startups are too busy figuring out new ways to cater to a fast-growing consumer base to worry about it."

Geld aus dem sozialen Netz
C-Crowd is a crowdsourcing capital internet platform from Switzerland. Because of a different regulatory circumstances, it is, other than their US counterparts Kickstarter.com, Rockethub.com or Quirky.com possible to acquire shares over the internet, and not "just" donate.

Certainly an interesting option to the classic three F's – Family, Friends & Fools and also from the elitary business angel option.

Digitale Topfkollekte - Plattformen für «Crowdfunding» werden populärer
Crowdfunding - collective financing for "sustainable" projects is hip, e.g. the crowd-funded beer brewery BeerBankroll.com. Wikipedia's Jimmy Wales' appeals for contributions and Mohammed Yunes' microfinance model raised willingness of the internet citizens to spend/invest. Characteristics of "Crowdfunding":
- Crowd has time, ideals and often some money available
- Profit sharing
- Social media helps the crowd to profiling (status!) themselves
- Participation bonuses (e.g. artist crafted T-shirt for every $ 1000 investment)
- Short fund-raising phases have higher chances as the needed "buzz" hardly can be kept up over a longer term
Now crowdfunding platforms such as KIVA.org, KICKSTARTER.com or STARTNEXT.com. But there are legal issues because share policies differ between countries. Workarounds are monthly fees (e.g. GrowVC) or PROFOUNDER.com (no shares but share of the turnover).
GreenDB should keep these trends in mind when looking for donations.
