Seven Cups - Fine Chinese Tea
Quality-oriented USA-based tea sourcing company with insightful blog with posts such as:
https://sevencups.com/2011/10/fair-trade-tea-in-china/

About:
"Seven Cups is an American tea company based in Tucson, Arizona. We source traditional, handmade Chinese teas directly from the growers and tea masters who make them, and we bring those teas back from China to share with people everywhere.

We focus on direct sourcing because it gives us two important advantages. First, we get the teas we want because we select them ourselves. We travel to all of these places, 22 producers in ten different regions of China, from one side of China to the other. Second, we build relationships with our tea masters and growers, and see for ourselves how they make their teas. We gather this information and share it with our customers. Both of these pieces – real tea and the story behind it – are what our customers have come to expect.
[...]
We’re also dedicated to promoting Chinese tea culture. Seven Cups is a member of the Chinese International Tea Culture institute, and our founder Austin Hodge is the first American to be published in their journal."

transversal
About:
"transversal is an anti-peer-review platform. We object to the increasing pressure to domesticate styles, forms and formats, to valorize and self-valorize through the usual mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion in the publication industries.

transversal explicitly supports copyleft practices. All contents, both original texts and translations, are subject to the copyright of their authors, but may be copied and reproduced by any means for any kind of non-commercial and non-institutional use and distribution, whether private or public.

transversal also explicitly supports the use of gender-inclusive language, both in original texts and translations. Exceptions are the responsibility of the individual authors. However, due to the respective structures of the different languages, but also due to different ways in which linguistic gender-sensitivity is developed by authors and translators, a variety of gender-inclusive language usages may appear."

Their organisation was previously called eipcp (european institute for progressive cultural policies - http://eipcp.net).

MINDFASHION.today
About:
"With MINDFASHION.today Janne Baetsen presents a unique ‘Human Innovation’ approach to fashion design, cultural economics, psychology, technology and branding, to contribute to a more profound insight into relationships, identities and communities in today’s world of fashion. How? By (re)establishing the connection between the clothes, the creator and the wearer, and questioning what we (need to) value, what we wear as well as how we dispose of it. Focussing not only on clothing but also on the complexity of human behaviour, innovation, experience and communication across all aspects of fashion, to generate deep understanding of the current and future (creative) economy.

The aim is to reveal the significance of fashion as a way of communicating, and identify existing issues in the fashion world that can be explained using a holistic view of disciplines, to predict, express, address and ultimately change behaviour for the better."

GNU Kind Communications Guidelines
Excerpt:
"A code of conduct states rules, with punishments for anyone that violates them. It is the heavy-handed way of teaching people to behave differently, and since it only comes into action when people do something against the rules, it doesn't try to teach people to do better than what the rules require. To be sure, the appointed maintainer(s) of a GNU package can, if necessary, tell a contributor to go away; but we do not want to need to have recourse to that. The idea of the GNU Kind Communication Guidelines is to start guiding people towards kinder communication at a point well before one would even think of saying, "You are breaking the rules." The way we do this, rather than ordering people to be kind or else, is try to help people learn to make their communication more kind. I hope that kind communication guidelines will provide a kinder and less strict way of leading a project's discussions to be calmer, more welcoming to all participants of good will, and more effective."

Grace Foundation
Mission:
"The Grace Foundation raises funds and engages people with resources (money, knowledge, influence) to invest in a system change. [...] We further the creation of Terra Nova by supporting a network of comprehensive cultural models which we call healing biotopes. These centers aim to be self-sufficient thus laying the base for an alternative economy, decentralized and free from the conventional mechanisms of interest, debt and exploitation. This alternative economy is key to humanizing money. We support the implementation of this network by funding education and knowledge-sharing."

About:
"Established in 2007 by Sabine Lichtenfels and Rainer Ehrenpreis (Schweibenalp). The original inspiration to create a conduit for diverting money into large-scale peace work came to Sabine Lichtenfels and Benjamin von Mendelssohn during a pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. The strategy of building models for bringing about system change is based upon a political theory developed by Dr. Dieter Duhm and brought to life in the community of Tamera in Southern Portugal which we recognize as the first model ‘healing biotope’."

Ethical Principles:
"1) Work towards decentralized regional self-sufficiency in water, food and energy thus providing the complicity-free material base for a new culture.

2) Give equal attention to inner and outer peace work. It is seldom that a project fails due to external pressure alone. Egoic structures like struggles for power and attention, jealousy and envy need to be addressed and transformed for the healing of our culture of separation. This work must be held in balance with the needs of and the service to the larger whole.

3) Accept and address love and sexuality as aspects of the dominant culture which are in particular need of healing. These issues must be released from the domain of privacy and brought into public discourse for the healing and learning of all.

4) Support a spiritual practice which places the sacredness of life at its center.

5) Create an economy based on reciprocity, communal sharing and giving. One in which economy and ecology are restored to their right relationship – with economy serving ecology."

Letter from Shenzhen
Article about the Chinese 山寨 (shanzhai) copycatting culture.

Intro by CB Insights:
"In her piece for Logic Magazine, Xiaowei R. Wang says that traveling to China is like time-traveling. Even in the most rural villages, technology is there.

Wang describes the ubiquitous WeChat and QR codes that can be used to pay for everything, from street food to train tickets to massage chairs.

She also describes the Shanzai economy, which Wang calls “open-source on hyperspeed.” It has evolved from knock-off Louis Vuitton bags and Friends on DVD to people creating original products — like a cell phone with a compass that points to Mecca — and building on each other’s work “in a decentralized way.”

Wang says this “extreme open-source” offers a glimpse into the future — and starkly contrasts American technology, which is becoming more and more proprietary.

It’s tempting to draw comparisons between tech in the US and China, but it might not really be an apples-to-apples comparison. Maybe technology is more cultural — and less universal — than we think."

Global Ecovillage Network - Community for a Regenerative World
About:
"The Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) catalyzes communities for a regenerative world. GEN is a growing network of regenerative communities and initiatives that bridge cultures, countries, and continents.

GEN builds bridges between policy-makers, governments, NGOs, academics, entrepreneurs, activists, community networks and ecologically-minded individuals across the globe in order to develop strategies for a global transition to resilient communities and cultures.
[...]
An ecovillage is an intentional, traditional or urban community that is consciously designed through locally owned, participatory processes in all 5 dimensions of sustainability (social, culture, ecology, economy and whole systems design) to regenerate their social and natural environments.

Ecovillages are living laboratories pioneering beautiful alternatives and innovative solutions. They are rural or urban settlements with vibrant social structures, vastly diverse, yet united in their actions towards low-impact, high-quality lifestyles.
[...]
GEN is composed of 5 regional networks, spanning the globe. The network is made up of approximately 10,000 communities and related projects where people are living together in greater ecological harmony.

Some network members include large networks like Sarvodaya (2,000 active sustainable villages in Sri Lanka); the Federation of Damanhur in Italy and Nimbin in Australia; as well as small rural ecovillages like Gaia Asociación in Argentina and Huehuecoyotl in Mexico.

It also includes urban rejuvenation projects like Los Angeles EcoVillage and Christiania in Copenhagen; permaculture design sites such as Crystal Waters, Australia, Cochabamba, Bolivia and Barus, Brazil; and educational centres such as Findhorn in Scotland, Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales, Earthlands in Massachusetts, and many more."

Started in 1995. For example the Switzerland-based ecovillage Schweibenalp is member of GEN Europe.

Designing Regenerative Cultures - book by Daniel Christian Wahl
Foreword:
"This is a ‘Whole Earth Catalog’ for the 21st century: an impressive and wide-ranging analysis of what’s wrong with our societies, organizations, ideologies, worldviews and cultures – and how to put them right. The book covers the finance system, agriculture, design, ecology, economy, sustainability, organizations and society at large.

In this remarkable book, Daniel Wahl explores ways in which we can reframe and understand the crises that we currently face and explores how we can live our way into the future. Moving from patterns of thinking and believing to our practice of education, design and community living, he systematically shows how we can stop chasing the mirage of certainty and control in a complex and unpredictable world.

The book asks how can we collaborate in the creation of diverse regenerative cultures adapted to the unique biocultural conditions of place? How can we create conditions conducive to life?"

MATTER | Change Beyond Textiles
About:
"MATTER reinterprets textile heritage into prints that tell stories of where and why they are made. Our mission is threefold – to foster designer-artisan collaborations, inspire customers to value provenance and process, and pioneer industry change and sustainability for rural textile communities.

Founded in 2014, we began simply with the intention to make where and why something is made, and by whom, matter. [...] Grounded on purpose and impact, we always knew that we wanted this to go beyond creating products that reflect a culture’s heritage in its craft.

We create garments and accessories that accompany you through day and night, always with the ethos of comfort and versatility in mind. Working with a curative philosophy inspired by tradition, we source heritage prints and styles while reinterpreting them in a modern manner. Our mission is to impact change beyond textiles — to make rural artisan production sustainable, shift designers’ approach to their process, and inspire customers to value provenance."

The uneasy transition from supply chains to ecosystems The value-creation/value-capture dilemma
Excerpt from this scientific paper :
"Many articles have been written about the process of value creation for the customer(Flint and Woodruff, 2001), the supplier (Hogan, 2001; Walter
et al.
, 2001), or thebuyer-seller dyad (Kothandaraman and Wilson, 2001). However, despite the growinginterest in innovation ecosystems (Adner and Kapoor, 2010; Iyer and Davenport, 2008),very few authors have tackled the emerging and increasingly widespread phenomenonof value co-creation and capture with a multilevel approach. A new perspective rootedin new innovation paradigms deserves exploration (Sharma
et al.
, 2001). Moreover, very few authors have focused on longitudinal cases of the entire lifecycle process, even though it is important to understand the entire ecosystem lifecycle of valuecreation and capture. Indeed, critical cases often reveal fine-grained data and providericher insight on processes (Yin, 1994). [...] Practical implications: Five theoretical and managerial propositions are suggested to betterleverage ecosystemic capabilities and better manage value creation and value capture in ecosystems."

China’s Coming Ideological Wars
Excerpt: "Just a decade or two ago, many commentators had trouble accepting that Chinese statesmen — or even educated Chinese — were anything but Communist ideologues. In the early 2000s, the notion that Chinese elites no longer believed in Communism was still a novel one that sometimes triggered incredulity and backlash. By contrast, anyone today who insists that Communist ideals still hold sway over Chinese policymaking does so at considerable risk to his or her reputation as a serious China hand." HAG

Lagos shows how a city can recover from a deep, deep pit
Interview with Rem Koolhaas about how Nigeria's capital Lagos has been in an alleged stage of disorder (read: functional anarchy) after the war 20 years ago and how it now has developed. He made an interesting point with: "I studied in London in 1968. Our school had a separate department of tropical architecture. Of course it was totally unfashionable, partly because nobody wanted to think about colonialism, but basically what you learned there was that, OK, the sun is here, so you should create natural ventilation here – an unbelievable amount of really sound principles that have been completely abandoned, so now everything is air conditioned with big machines." The Craftsman's Comeback
Excerpts: "There is no fundamental difference between an artist and a craftsman. [..] shift in our cultural thinking where all creative arts are linked, visually and intellectually. [..] Because the craftsman is every bit as sacrosanct as the artist. [...] Look at WABI SABI art in 15th century Japan (where broken pottery pieces were repaired with gold to emphasise the act of mending as an added value) and BORO FABRIC (again in Japan in the 17th and 18th century - just like quilting in Europe and America at the same time) - valuable textiles constructed by stitching together tiny scraps of waste fabric collected from several generations. [...] Fashion will lead by re-embracing its origins. By telling us again the story of the things we buy, promoting transparency as the new ‘must have’, preserving as well as fostering new craftsmanships and enthusing the next generation with an aesthetic that speaks of integrity and spells out MAKE CLOTHES BEAUTIFUL AGAIN." Unlike other public media is fashion almost omitting typically female body features, especially the ostentation of breasts. Philadelphia art world adopts community supported agriculture model
"Community supported art" derived from community supported agriculture model.

Excerpt of how it works:
"The Folklore Project selected nine artists working in traditional and folk media for its CSA, which will offer 50 shares for $350 each. Each share contains fiber art, a metal cow bell, painted eggs, a doll, needlepoint bookmark, appliquéd baby carrier and origami. Each artist will produce a limited edition of 50 objects and, if all shares sell, will get 70 percent (roughly $1,360). The remaining 30 percent will cover program expenses."

Project-related for a "Curated Box":
"The GG/TSA partnership also selected nine artists for its curated box of art. Items include jewelry, prints, works on paper, a vinyl record of sound art and a metal sculpture. Fifty shares are available for $450 each, and if shares sell out, each artist will receive $750 plus a CSA share of art. The CSA would get roughly $15,750."

Ein scharfer Blick auf unser Ländli
A plea for more personal responsibility from the city planner of Basel; Thomas Kessler.

An Investigation of China's Peasants - Chen Guidi & Wu Chuntao
This quite famous book portrays the difficult life of the Chinese farmers. Surely, many things are changing, especially since the book came out in 2005, but still many things have to improve. It would be interesting to know whether our Chinese friends who knows well about agriculture have heard of this book. 20091013/HAG
