Software Freedom Conservancy
"Software Freedom Conservancy helps promote, improve, develop, and defend Free, Libre, and Open Source Software (FLOSS) projects. Conservancy provides a non-profit home and infrastructure for FLOSS projects.
Once joined, the “member project” receives most of the benefits of existing as a non-profit corporate entity without engaging in the arduous work of forming a separate, new organization. Conservancy aggregates the work of running a FLOSS non-profit for its many members.

Conservancy provides many important services for its member projects. Member projects can take directed donations, which allows donors to earmark their donations for the benefit of a specific FLOSS project. Conservancy provides fiscal oversight to ensure that these funds are spent in a manner that advances the project and fits with Conservancy's 501(c)(3) mission to promote, advance, and defend software freedom.

If the member project's leaders want, Conservancy can also hold other assets and titles on behalf of the projects, such as copyrights, trademarks, domain names, online hosting accounts, and title and ownership of physical hardware. Also at discretion of the project's leaders, Conservancy can assist in defending the rights represented in these assets. For example, Conservancy is available to assist member projects in enforcing the terms of the projects' FLOSS license.
Conservancy opposes the notion of patents that cover software, and urges contributors to its member projects not to apply for patents."

Solar Impulse Foundation - Bridging the gap between ecology and economy
"One of the first to envision ecology through the lens of profitability, Bertrand Piccard has always advocated that protection of the environment would become a reality only if it was perceived as economically viable and requiring no financial or behavioural sacrifices. He actively speaks out against the absurdity of old and polluting devices and systems, and promotes the benefits of new existing efficient technologies and solutions to motivate governments and industries to take action. A way to prove that solving climate change – rather than an expensive problem – is a fantastic market opportunity."

One of the main programs of the Solar Impulse Foundation is their Label:

"For the first time a label proves the economic profitability of solutions that protect the environment
selecting 1,000 solutions that protect the environment in a profitable way and awarding them the Solar Impulse Efficient Solutions Label.

This label serves as a new and credible symbol that can be applied to products, processes and services and serves as a guarantee of quality to those looking to implement clean solutions, and affords a competitive edge to the innovators behind them.

Assessed by independent experts for their technological feasibility, environmental and socio-economic benefits, and economic profitability, a portfolio of these solutions will be brought to decision-makers to encourage them to adopt much more ambitious environmental targets and energy policies."

License Zero
"License Zero is a new way to support open software developers.

Contributors can choose from two new licenses, Parity and Prosperity, that make their work free for not-for-profit or open-source users, then sell private licenses to other devs who want to use for profit or in closed source. Everything happens through a simple, dev-friendly interface.

Tidelift | Open source software you can depend on
"Simply put, our mission is making open source work better—for everyone.
Open source software is incredible, but it’s got some issues. For open source maintainers, a project can feel like a full-time job even when it isn’t—a labor of love, with little direct financial reward. For professional software teams, building on top of open source components can be risky business—especially without the assurances they expect from traditional commercial software.

So we asked ourselves:
How could open source work better for everyone involved?

First, software development teams should be able to depend on the open source software they incorporate into their projects. They should be confident that it is reliable—professionally supported, more secure, easy to integrate, and properly maintained.

Meanwhile, open source maintainers and core teams should be compensated for the value their projects create. They should have easy access to paying users and to the tools necessary to deliver a professional software experience.
For us, it’s as simple as that. Create a win-win proposition, where everyone sees the benefits.

The end result? More, better software that our entire planet depends on."

Marketing in China: Industry Interviews

Paul Lin, OMD
"The hottest channel that all of our clients are asking about is Douyin. [...] Little Red Book can be a place for product discovery [...] sense of Chinese nationalism, the growing strength of the country and the pride that it has instilled in citizens. Brands that can tap into this can align themselves with the zeitgeist."

Jerry Clode, Resonance
"Ideally, a brand should focus on one to two holidays per year which make sense from a storytelling perspective. Then ensure that these events are promoted and communicated as a phased media engagement. There is little value in trying to cover the entire calendar. [...] ROI metrics are increasingly defined by brand sentiment. Also, due to the increasing sophistication and integration of e-commerce, ROI metrics are now encompassing sales conversion. [...] WeChat and Weibo remain dominant, but 2018 is the year of video. One of the biggest video-sharing platforms, Meipai, receives eight billion views a month. Chinese influencers and celebrities love to use these apps to create a closer connection to fans. The growth of these platforms suggests brands should consider integrating short video and live-streaming into their marketing strategies. [...] The Little Red Book are especially suitable for cosmetic or fashion brands because of their concentration on selfies and cosmetic sharing. [...] Platforms like Douyin and Bilibili index very young, below 24 years old. The strategy for this platform is very different to WeChat or Weibo – not only the content execution, but also the tone of voice and tactics. [...] With more WeChat official accounts launching mini-programmes, it has become much easier for consumers to shop and a sales ROI can be more closely tied to a social media campaign."

Ashley Dudarenok, Alarice and ChoZan
"Lucky draws are the most common campaign type on Chinese social media. Generally, in a Weibo post or at the end of a WeChat article, a topic is raised for discussion and readers are encouraged to leave a comment or send a private message to the official account for a chance to win a lucky draw. These are effective in encouraging user interaction, attracting new followers and increasing loyalty.

User-generated content is another type of popular campaign strategy. Brands can encourage users to create something, like a themed photo of themselves with the brand’s merchandise, and upload it to a campaign page to win a gift. Brands also cooperate with KOLs who encourage their followers to participate.

This type of campaign is another kind of lucky draw. The core difference is that visual user-generated content is more persuasive than written testimonials. It helps brands collect high-quality original content from their followers that can be used in other marketing activities."

Letter from Shenzhen
Article about the Chinese 山寨 (shanzhai) copycatting culture.

Intro by CB Insights:
"In her piece for Logic Magazine, Xiaowei R. Wang says that traveling to China is like time-traveling. Even in the most rural villages, technology is there.

Wang describes the ubiquitous WeChat and QR codes that can be used to pay for everything, from street food to train tickets to massage chairs.

She also describes the Shanzai economy, which Wang calls “open-source on hyperspeed.” It has evolved from knock-off Louis Vuitton bags and Friends on DVD to people creating original products — like a cell phone with a compass that points to Mecca — and building on each other’s work “in a decentralized way.”

Wang says this “extreme open-source” offers a glimpse into the future — and starkly contrasts American technology, which is becoming more and more proprietary.

It’s tempting to draw comparisons between tech in the US and China, but it might not really be an apples-to-apples comparison. Maybe technology is more cultural — and less universal — than we think."

Metro - Data Crowdsourcing for AI and Machine Learning >>> Generate and sell your own data
"Anybody can use our community-made plugins, "DataSources", to generate data and sell it in real-time to a Project. (free for now) A Project could be a groundbreaking new AI, a research study, or someone's curiosity project.
Artificial Intelligence is fueled by data, so innovation is monopolized by those who control data.
Our philosophy is "Empower, Don't Restrict". Let users control and monetize their data.
We want to create a transparent and fair system of sharing any kind of data where both the producer of data and the buyer of data have the power they deserve. Right now, the middle-man has all of the power and that is why the world is dominated by Google and Facebook. This is a fair and honest system which will be built without imposing unreasonable restrictions upon what can and cannot be done.
We are not a data collection company. We're a data energizing company.
We have created a Chrome/FF extension to which users can attach "DataSources" - simple community-made pieces of code which allow users to generate their own data. Our website hosts "Projects", which are pieces of work which want to crowdsource data from users using specific DataSources. DataSources are made and curated by the community, not by us, and they are open source so anybody can verify them. This gives the community direct access to raw data with its intrinsic innovative value for the coming AI revolution, while giving individual users direct access to the monetary value."

26 Practical Demand Generation Strategies For Startups
"The goal of demand generation is to build and nurture key prospect and customer relationships for the long term, and that requires your marketing and sales teams to be aligned.

For a startup or small business, this means your marketing team will identify and attract prospective customers or clients using content, community management, email campaigns, in-person events, and other inbound marketing strategies.

Meanwhile, your sales team will qualify those prospects with lead scoring systems, identify high-quality prospects, and then nurture them into your sales funnel. At some companies, marketers may also help qualify prospective customers in order to provide the sales team with higher-quality leads.
Inbound marketing is all about creating content and viewing yourself, company, etc. as a publisher of content, that when combined with other inbound marketing best practices, can generate quality inbound leads for your business, inside and outside sales teams."

Strategies separated into 5 categories:

6 Content Strategies
5 Social Media/Community Management Strategies
4 Email Strategies
5 Paid Advertising Strategies
3 Public Relations Strategies
3 Bonus Strategies

A new structure developed called "Initial loan purchase" ("ILP") will be used to issue loans.

By signing a credit agreement with blockhive through an ILP, participants receive Hive tokens, which in turn confer access to a loan agreement. After entering into a loan agreement via smart contact, creditors are entitled to an interest payment on the loan — 20% of blockhive’s annual operating profit.

blockhive will provide the following services:

- Help businesses raise funds using the ILP structure

- A wallet, enabling the management of assets, making payments and transfers

- Later it is planned to introduce an airdrop function enabling users to find restaurants, cafes and shops, offering discounts and to accumulate loyalty points or tokens that enable acquiring hash-power from mining enterprises and other benefits."

Global Agriculture Information Network (GAIN)
Belongs to USDA and for example checks on China's pesticide residues policies to monitor the risks for tainted food imports.

"Provides timely information on the agricultural economy, products and issues in foreign countries since 1995 that are likely to have an impact on United States agricultural production and trade. U.S. Foreign Service officers working at posts overseas collect and submit information on the agricultural situation in more than 130 countries to USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), which maintains the GAIN reports.

Production, Supply, and Distribution (PSD) data in GAIN reports are NOT official USDA data, but represent estimates made by FAS Attachés. Official USDA PSD data are determined after analyzing all overseas reports and drawing on additional sources, including more than 1,500 documents received from private and public sources around the world, global weather information, and satellite imagery analysis. After this analysis, official USDA data are released in USDA's World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates monthly report and in FAS' World Production, Market, and Trade reports."

Completed a US$50 million fundraising round led by Alibaba Innovation Ventures, Softbank China and Sequoia China.

Tries to embrace circular economy, although still seem to be quite far away from zero-waste because the whole logistics and packaging processes along the rental supply chain make the overall environmental foodprint questionable.

"Real businesses make products and sell them for a profit. They focus on customers, revenue and profitability not investors, valuations and the next fundable milestone. Real businesses prioritize their customer’s needs over their customer’s eyeballs. They have a functioning business model, not a believable financial model. Real businesses want to stay in business, not run for the exit. They create their own source of funding and don’t have to ask anyone for permission to exist. We believe real businesses make really great investments."

Mostly tech or tech-enabled industries. Their main terms are basically these two components: an equity option and profit sharing.

* Equity Option *

Only if or when you decide to raise additional capital or sell your business do we become shareholders of your company. In short, our investment will remain non-dilutive until you choose otherwise. To break this down:

If you raise $500,000, or more, in a preferred equity round, our investment converts into preferred shares at the new round's pre-money valuation.
If you sell, we convert into common shares at the pre-determined percentage.

* Profit Sharing *

Should you choose to run your business profitably, you never sell or raise more capital, we have the right to participate in cash distributions on a monthly basis, after month 36 from the time of the initial investment.

The amount of distributions will be based on the greater of Net Revenue or of Net Income."

Additionally, two important notes:

"Cash distributions are capped at 3x max the initial investment, e.g. if you raise $500,000 with a 10% equity option, cash distributions are capped at $1,500,000.
If you pay back the 3x in 3 years or less, the option is halved, e.g. if you raise $500,000 with a 10% equity option and pay back $1,500,000 in 3 years or less, the equity option becomes 5%.

Start-ups shouldn't try to be unicorns—they should be zebras
"The current technology and venture capital structure is broken. It rewards quantity over quality, consumption over creation, quick exits over sustainable growth, and shareholder profit over shared prosperity. It chases after “unicorn” companies bent on “disruption” rather than supporting businesses that repair, cultivate, and connect."

Excerpts (slightly modified by HAG to include non-internet companies too):
"Unicorns stand for exponential growth instead of sustainable prosperity in case of Zebra [...] monopoly vs plurality [...] competition vs cooperation [...] more vs enough/better [...] quantity-metric vs quality-metric [...] customer acquisition vs customer success"

Common challenges facing which zebra companies are facing:

"1. The problem isn’t product, it’s process.
(help institutions adopt, deploy, and measure the success of innovation, apps or otherwise)

2. Zebra companies are often started by women and other underrepresented founders.
(start 30 percent of businesses, yet receive only 5 percent of small-business loans and 3 percent of venture capital)

3. You can’t be it if you can’t see it.
(lack heroes to emulate, so they default to the “growth at all costs” model)

4. Zebras are stuck between two outdated paradigms, nonprofit and for-profit.
(existing imperfect structures like hybrid for-profit/nonprofit, Public Benefit Corps, B-Corps, L3Cs can be prohibitively expensive)

5. Impact investing’s thesis is detrimentally narrow and risk-averse.
(mostly limited to verticals like clean technology, microfinance, or global health)"

Risky business: instability and lack of local knowledge hold back Chinese firms in Africa, report says
"China has greatly expanded its infrastructure, energy, mining and manufacturing businesses in Africa in recent years, but the investment environment there has many risks and many companies’ operations are flawed, according to the annual report on development in Africa by the Beijing-based Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
Regional wars and conflicts have cost Chinese enterprises massively in countries such as Libya, Ivory Coast and South Sudan, while investment in the oil industry is going to areas where extremist groups like Boko Haram are expanding."

The Natural Step - Accelerate the transition to a sustainable society
NPO founded in founded in Sweden in 1989 by Karl-Henrik Robèrt.

They attempt to draft the following definition of sustainability:

"The Four System Conditions of a Sustainable Society - A Science-Based Definition of Sustainability:

-> Framework For Strategic Sustainable Development revolves around a robust, science-based definition of sustainability. “Robust” means that the principles contained in this definition are both necessary and enough to achieve sustainability. They are also applicable to any activity at any scale and they don’t overlap (each principle covers its own domain).
Scientifically ... four system conditions ... basic sustainability principles:

In a sustainable society, nature is not subject to systematically increasing …

1. … concentrations of substances from the earth’s crust (such as fossil CO2 and heavy metals),

2. … concentrations of substances produces by society (such as antibiotics and endocrine disruptors),
3. … degradation by physical means (such as deforestation and draining of groundwater tables),

4. ... in that society … there are no structural obstacles to people’s health, influence, competence, impartiality and meaning."

They developed the ABCD PROCESS to help interested companies to apply the rules for sustainability to their core business model, to improve long-term value creation. Steps:

A. Awareness: ‘whole-systems’ definition to build a vision

B. Baseline assessment: Conduct a sustainability ‘gap analysis’ of the major flows and impacts of the organisation. Assist organisations to identify critical sustainability issues, their business implications, and strategic opportunities for change.

C. Creative solutions: Innovative ways to realize vision by re-shaping mission, strategy and organization.

D. Devise a plan: Milestone plan with first steps, “low hanging fruits” and longer term planning."

Climate, Energy, Economy: Pick Two (Resilience Is The New Black)
Article by Dr. Nelson Lebo, a serial permaculture property developer about the world's dilemma, with resiliency in mind as possible way out (e.g. with permaculture). Excerpts:

"We used to have this saying that if someone asks you to do a job good, fast and cheap, you’d say: pick two. You can have it good and cheap, but then it won’t be fast, etc.
when it comes to our societies we face a similar issue with our climate, energy and the economy.
Everything that is not resilient to high energy prices and extreme weather events will become economically unviable.
Investments of time, energy, and money in resilience will become more economically valuable.
Most people will experience climate change as a quality of life issue, and quality of life is related to a certain extent to disposable income. Acting or not acting proactively or reactively on climate change is expensive and gets more expensive every day.
Resilience Is The New Black.
Smart communities recognize challenges and respond accordingly. The best response is to develop resilience in the following areas: ecological, equity, energy and economic.
Pope Francis has identified climate change and wealth inequality as the greatest challenges facing humanity.
The knowledge, skills and experience gained while developing resilience are the ultimate in ‘job security’ for an increasingly volatile future."

Can Fintech Startups Carry Out Crowd-Funding in Hong Kong?
" In view of the maturation of Fintech (Financial Technologies) ecology, the concept of crowd-funding is appealing to the general public as an option for start-ups to raise funds on web or mobile based platforms. The two areas of financial innovation that have seen strong growth in recent years are:
1. equity crowd-funding
2. peer-to-peer lending (P2P lending)
HK's Securities and Futures Commission (“SFC”) names risks:
- Default or failure of the investment project or business
- Illiquidity and dilution of stock value
- Platform failure
- Fraud
- Information asymmetry and lack of transparency
- Cyber security
- Illegal activities
Some studies predicted that the global investments in Fintech may surge from US$12 billion in 2014 to over US$46 billion in 2020.
- HK Government will set aside HK$2 billion to set up an Innovation and Technology Venture Fund for co-investing in local technology start-ups with private venture capital funds on a matching basis
- HK$200 million to launch a Cyberport Macro Fund for investment in its ICT start-ups"

What does it really take to launch a fashion brand? - Talent, Connections, but more than anything: a lot of money.
Not agriculture- or China-related but the article and the critical voices show up interesting entrepreneurial options.

While there lies truth in the "capital ist most important aspect", the commenting article www.startupfashion.com/fashionista-what-it-takes-launch-fashion-brand pointed out: "I found it to be a rather narrow view of the definition of a 'fashion brand'. [... ] It only addresses a certain kind of fashion brand launch; the traditional kind, where the designer follows a predefined “roadmap” instead of their own creative path. [...] Things like fashion show venues, expensive consultants, and the best photographers are not a necessary part of launching a fashion brand. Even things like lower minimums can be negotiated or creatively solved by keeping collections tightly edited. [...] If bootstrapping and hoping that all of your efforts and ideas and creativity will help to sell the collection is the only way it’s going to happen, then do it!"

China Slashes Import Tariffs on Selected Consumer Goods
China Briefing News article on the reduction which takes action on June 1 2015. Intro: "China will slash tariffs by 50 percent for 14 categories of goods. These relaxed tariff rates come at a time when the government is playing with fiscal policy in order to increase domestic consumption." Excerpt: "However, critics have stated that the tariff cuts alone may not be enough to significantly increase domestic consumption of imported products. [...] that VAT and distribution and department store costs are largely responsible for the high prices of imported goods. Reducing import tariffs by 50 percent would only be able to reduce the actual retail prices of items like Western-style suits, fur clothes, and boots by three to six percent. Furthermore, international brands that are produced in China would not be affected by the changed import tariff rate." Elon Musk's growing empire is fueled by $4.9 billion in government subsidies
Excerpt: "Tesla Motors, SolarCity and SpaceX, together have benefited from an estimated $4.9 billion in government support. The figure underscores a common theme running through his emerging empire: a public-private financing model underpinning long-shot start-ups." [...] "The payoff for the public would come in the form of major pollution reductions, but only if solar panels and electric cars break through as viable mass-market products. For now, both remain niche products for mostly well-heeled customers." Creating a Strong Company Culture
Excerpt: "When hiring, it is tempting to employ someone who has done it before. You actually don’t want that person. You want someone who is about to do it. After all, if they’ve done it before, why would they do it again? Either they’re not ambitious, not growth-oriented, or weren’t that good in their previous role. No matter which it is, you don’t want them. This is one way to screw up your culture — experience-based hiring leads to bringing in those who have the right credentials, but not the right fire in their soul." HAG

苏州科赛城镇投资发展集团有限公司 - Suzhou Kesai Urban Investment and Development Group Co., Ltd.

Sources (WHA) told me that land got stolen from farmers and given to Kesai to make these 'development projects' happen. HAG
