Fingon wanders in Eastern Beleriand and comes across a long-lost relative.

my note: standalone story explaining Gil-Gilad. All you need to know from the overall arc is that Maedhros is pining and Fingon still oblivious. I like this Lalwen/Írimë.

A Road Bright And Swift by dorinda
Gimli, freshly-wakened, was lying with his head propped on one hand, his blanket at his waist. And he said, his voice morning-hoarse, "If my memory doesn't fail me, we'll be reaching the River Limlight soon. I'd dearly love a wash."

Legolas's heart seized and tightened. The Limlight was in the very north of the forest, and once across it, they would emerge from their easy wandering, cracking out of the chrysalis to the pain of the open air. No more Fangorn, no more careless peace, no more Gimli at dawn stretching his muscles limber and grumbling about the wear of a bootsole.

And all the future losses lined themselves up.

The Long Road by kaz
Elladan really wasn't planning to get thrown back in time to Beleriand, but the world didn't bother asking his opinion. Now, he struggles to find a way back home as the First Age unfolds around him. The host of newly acquired relatives, including a great-uncle with a flair for dramatics, sons of Fëanor who insist on being people rather than historical villains, and a several-times great-grandmother with some unexpected skills, just make it more overwhelming.

Upon These Shores by lyra
The fate of Maglor, left to walk the shores of Middle Earth forever after he cast away the Silmaril, is pretty much open for speculation. Here are some glimpses at his adventures throughout human history, in no particular order.

my note: I don't normally like Maglor-in-history stories because I don't like Tolkien's idea that Middle Earth became our world, and nor do I often find historical fiction accurate enough, but this doesn't have that kind of false note and strikes some interesting ones.

The Tapestries by dawn felagund
The Tapestries is a multi-chapter novella that does just what Jenni asked: recaps the Noldorin arrival in Middle-earth. However, it does so from the perspective of Fëanáro, looking back at his life from the halls of Mandos. The story deals with the mind-brain problem, the malleability of memory, the issue of historical bias in The Silmarillion, and whether Fëanor was truly insane.

Pantië by Emilyenrose
“It is not my body that imprisons me,” Maedhros said with a pointed look at the shackles around his wrists.

Sauron laughed. “You are quite mistaken. Take, for example, the – what is it your people call it? – the blossoming, I believe, is the local term; an interesting metaphor; the Sindar are of course very florally minded. It is most tiresome. Ah, I remember – opening.” He smirked. “Avoiding metaphor altogether, for of course it is an opening. There is the obvious if rather undignified physical action, of course, but what is strange to me is the effect that then has on the spirit – which opens, which yields. Therefore your body compels a subjection not merely to your own flesh but even to the flesh of another – and thus, of course, to the spirit of another. Now that is imprisonment, if you like!”
