Philippe Descola est ethnologue et anthropologue. Il occupe une chaire d’Anthropologie de la nature au Collège de France depuis 2000. Dans Par-delà nature et culture (Gallimard, 2005), il cherche à extraire l’anthropologie du paradigme que constituait pour elle le dualisme de la nature et de la culture. Il y montre que l’opposition entre nature et culture, loin d’être universelle, ne constitue qu’une façon parmi d’autres d’objectiver la réalité. La finalité de l’anthropologie s’en trouve profondément modifiée. Celle-ci ne n’est plus l’étude de la diversité des cultures sur fond d’une nature partout homogène, mais la mise au jour de schèmes, c’est-à-dire de structures d’objectivation de la réalité, dont l’opposition nature/culture n’est qu’une des réalisations possibles. Ce concept de « schème », qui témoigne de l’attachement de Philippe Descola au structuralisme, constitue un nouvel outil d’analyse, qui ne se confond pas avec les notions de « société », de « tribu », de « nation », de « classe » ou de « civilisation ». Les aires d’extension des différents schèmes ne coïncident en effet ni avec les frontières linguistiques, ni avec les réseaux d’échange, ni même avec les modes de vie des peuples étudiés par les sciences humaines. A cri de coeur for putting legal theory and history back together with social theory and empirical social sciences,. -- In the early part of my career, legal history and the history of legal ideas were closed books to me, as I made my way in a field of criminal law scholarship dominated by doctrinal scholarship and by concept-focused philosophical analysis of the foundations of criminal law. These 2 very different paradigms have 1 big thing in common: They tend to proceed as if the main intellectual task is to unearth the deep logic of existing legal doctrines, not infrequently going so far as to read them back onto history, as if things could never have been other than they are. (..)I have increasingly found myself turning to historical resources (1) [to examine] the contingency of particular legal arrangements, and (2) ...to develop causal and other theses about the dynamics which shape them and hence about the role and quality of criminal law as a form of power in modern societies. So, in a sense, I have been using history in support of an analysis driven primarily by the social sciences. (..) it is no accident that all of the great social theorists, from Marx to Foucault via Weber, Durkheim, and Elias, ..have incorporated significant historical elements into their interpretations .... Indeed, without the diachronic perspective provided by history (or the perspective offered by comparative study) we could have no critical purchase on social theory’s characterizations of or causal hypotheses about the dynamics of social systems. Previously published in French in laviedesidees.fr, 14 February 2011. Translated by John Zvesper with the support of the Florence Gould Foundation. -- Louis Dumont is very well known for his anthropological work on India, but rather less for his political thought. Vincent Descombes emphasizes the substantial originality of that thought, which defined the political on the basis of comparative studies and in that way dispelled some of the equivocations of modern and contemporary philosophy. -- very interesting re anthropologist who developed a comparative method that would allow it to be turned back on Western modernity, and some political implications, including distinguishing French and German versions of individualism -- discussion of Rousseau's "general will" vs "will of all" makes more sense of it within this framing -- also Montesquieu, Tocqueville and especially Hegel moving back and forth, sometimes explicitly as in Montesquieu and less sharply in Hegel, with society as a (political, cultural, self-conscious? ) whole vs the political institutions -- see bibliography including list of Dumont’s works -- downloaded pdf to Note

Naming this body of fiction Enlightenment Orientalism, he poses a range of urgent questions that uncovers the interdependence of Oriental tales and domestic fiction, thereby challenging standard scholarly narratives about the rise of the novel. -- The Radical Enlightenment has been much discussed and its original meaning somewhat distorted. In 1981 my concept of the storm that unleashed a new, transnational intellectual movement possessed a strong contextual and political element that I believed, and still believe, to be critically important. Idealist accounts of enlightened ideas that divorce them from politics leave out the lived quality of the new radicalism born in reaction to monarchical and clerical absolutism. Taking the religious impulse seriously and working to defang it of bellicosity would require years of labor. First all the world’s religions had to be surveyed, see Picart’s seven folio volumes; and Rousseau’s Savoyard vicar had to both preach and live religion simply as true virtue; and finally Jefferson editing the Bible so as to get the irrational parts simply removed, thus making people more fit to grant a complete religious toleration. Throughout the century all these approaches to revealed religion may be legitimately described as radical. Each produced a different recommendation for its replacement. Dampier was a "buccaneer", sometime Admiralty sponsored explorer, and his "painted prince" a tatooed native brought back from a voyage, who died in 1692. Most of the publicity involving Dampier (recounting his travels, a medallion by Evelyn) in the 1690s. The article deals with growing cultural practices associated with exploration, from the voyages themselves and publishing and images associated with them to growth in consumer interest and the virtuoso and collector crazes. -- references to Swift and Gulliver -- also probably relevant to Three Hours after Marriage

Review by: J. Samuel Preus - Peter Harrison, "Religion" and the Religions in the English Enlightenment | JSTOR: Journal of the American Academy of Religion, Vol. 60, No. 3 (Autumn, 1992), pp. 553-555
High marks for explaining why deists were important for developing comparative religion. Harrison sees Hume as fatal step where excision of apologetics sends inquiry off into non scientific - Preus thinks this probably reflects world religions vision of Harrison's mentor WH Smith which actually interferes with a scientific approach to comparative religion.
