What do the party manifestos say on… research and innovation? | In Verba | Royal Society
This is the first in a series of three blog posts which will examine what the manifestos say in relation to our key areas of policy work; research and innovation, education policy and sustainability issues.

Bibliometrics: The Leiden Manifesto for research metrics : Nature News & Comment
Base assessment of individual researchers on a qualitative judgement of their portfolio. The older you are, the higher your h-index, even in the absence of new papers. The h-index varies by field: life scientists top out at 200; physicists at 100 and social scientists at 20–30 (ref. 8). It is database dependent: there are researchers in computer science who have an h-index of around 10 in the Web of Science but of 20–30 in Google Scholar9. Reading and judging a researcher's work is much more appropriate than relying on one number. Even when comparing large numbers of researchers, an approach that considers more information about an individual's expertise, experience, activities and influence is best.

23andMe presents top 10 most interesting genetic findings of 2010
It was a great year for 23andMe, as it proudly announced that its new web-based research paradigm (23andWe) works and unveiled its first peer-reviewed scientific study. The results, published last spring in PLoS Genetics, encompassed replications of previous findings as well as newly discovered genetic associations. 23andWe is a web-based, participant-driven research framework designed to facilitate the rapid recruitment and phenotyping of participants for many studies at once, thus reducing the time and money needed to make new discoveries. In this peer-reviewed paper 23andMe confirmed that self-reported data from customers has the potential to yield data of comparable quality as data gathered using traditional research methods, moving scientific research forward, faster.

The Future of the Internet | Europa - Information Society
"Already today, 1.5 billion people use the Internet. In a few years, once the Internet has become genuinely mobile, over 4 billion users and billions more devices and objects will be connected anywhere and anytime. But before this can happen, the Internet must undergo important changes. Designed in the seventies, it is starting to face technical limitations which hamper its potential. Browse through our website: discover the opportunities and challenges facing the Internet, and Europe's leading role in shaping its future." the main EC future internet portal - should point to most of the FI activity in Europe.

"Council is a loose group of professionals with different ideas and opinions. We sometimes differ and will probably clash. We prefer to host the full range of opinions on what will be a small avalanche of disruptive innovations. We do have something in common though. We have been through the full range of emotions and conceptual breakdown that comes with grasping the territory, the full logistical, business, social and philosophical implications of the Internet of Things."

Internet of Things - Architecture — IOT-A
"IoT-A, the European lighthouse integrated project addressing the Internet-of-Things Architecture, proposes the creation of an architectural reference model together with the definition of an initial set of key building blocks. Together they are envisioned as crucial foundations for fostering a future Internet of Things. Using an experimental paradigm, IoT-A will combine top-down reasoning about architectural principles and design guidelines with simulation and prototyping to explore the technical consequences of architectural design choices."

"In a research project at University of Reading I started doing research on People Tracking in camera images for automatic visual surveillance systems. The research was carried out within the European Framework V project ADVISOR in which we have developed an integrated visual surveillance and behaviour analysis system. The People Tracker developed within the project is based on the Leeds People Tracker which was developed by Adam Baumberg." great description

BeAware » Blog Archive » Energy Awareness and Conservation through Pervasive Applications
Call for Position Papers - Energy conservation is a growing area of interest for pervasive computing. Recently the problem of conserving energy through involvement of consumers has become topical. The multidisciplinary challenges for pervasive applications are numerous, including pervasive sensing of energy consumption, energy efficient infrastructures for sensing energy and users, and designing engaging applications that do not disrupt but support everyday activities.

Design Research: Concerning Energy: Graduate Program in Design at California College of the Arts
Concerning Energy is the theme for the 2008 course in Design Research. This design research practicum will use a variety of human-centered research methods to explore the awareness, attitudes, information sources and choices regarding the personal and domestic energy use among diverse groups in the San Francisco Bay Area. Knowing what people think and how their attitudes have been informed at the grassroots level will inform speculative design interventions that meet segments of the public "where they are" in our efforts to inform and influence behavior.

The End of Theory: The Data Deluge Makes the Scientific Method Obsolete
Sixty years ago, digital computers made information readable. Twenty years ago, the Internet made it reachable. Ten years ago, the first search engine crawlers made it a single database. Now Google and like-minded companies are sifting through the most measured age in history, treating this massive corpus as a laboratory of the human condition.
