The Tomorrow Project explores our possible futures through fact-based, science-based fiction and video conversations with scientists and science fiction authors, legends and world renowned experts, passionate advocates and everyday people. Science fiction gives all of us all a language so that we can have a conversation about the future and these conversations make dramatic changes. 

We are at the cusp of the emergence of a network of objects that empowers computers to perceive the world for themselves and act independently on our behalf. This has the potential to significantly impact the way we optimise the operation of cities, buildings, infrastructure and business.

What is an ICRI?

The Intel Science and Technology Center (ISTC) for Social Computing was launched in June 2012 to conduct foundational research into the relationship between information technology and society. Centered at UCI, it brings together an interdisciplinary group of researchers from leading universities across the United States, including experts in social media, digital culture, user interfaces, cultural computing, and participatory design.

The ISTC-PC will bring together researchers from six top tier US research universities, including leaders in pervasive computing, wireless communication and sensing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, computer vision, human-computer interaction (HCI), and security. The University of Washington will be the hub of the center, coordinating research among the five other universities involved in the collaboration, including Georgia Institute of Technology, Cornell University, the University of Rochester, UCLA, and Stanford University. The ISTC-PC will be co-led by Dieter Fox, associate professor of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington, and Anthony LaMarca, a principal engineer at Intel.

The Intel Science and Technology Center for Secure Computing focuses on scientific research to make computing technology safe and secure for users. We are headquartered at the University of California, Berkeley, with participation from world-leading researchers from Carnegie Mellon University, Drexel University, Duke University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Intel. The center is funded by Intel, and includes both academics and Intel researchers working together collaboratively to make computing safer for users.

Embedded computing systems touch every aspect of life. These synergistic combinations of hardware and software, designed to perform specific functions, can be found in a host of items in everyday use, from digital signs in stores to in-car GPS receivers to HVAC systems with networked thermostats. With the growing popularity of personalized, interactive, real- time technology, we expect to see a corresponding rise in demand for specialized embedded computing systems to support a broad range of new applications—including many that have not yet been envisioned. With this future demand in mind, Intel is launching a new research center to advance the field of embedded computing. The Intel Science and Technology Center for Embedded Computing (ISTC-EC) will bring together top thought leaders to develop breakthrough innovations that will transform experiences in the retail, automotive and home environments of the future. Focusing on the domains where people spend much of their time and financial resources will increase the likelihood that the center’s research can be transferred into high-impact applications that will be widely adopted and relevant to our everyday lives.

The Intel Science and Technology Center for Cloud Computing (ISTC-CC) is an open community of leading researchers devising critical new underlying technologies for cloud computing of the future. It is headquartered at Carnegie Mellon and includes researchers from Georgia Tech, Intel, Princeton, and UC-Berkeley.

The Intel Science and Technology Center for Big Data is one of a series of research collaborations that Intel is establishing with U.S. universities to identify and prototype revolutionary technology opportunities. The semiconductor manufacturer Intel and the Technische Universität (TU) Darmstadt have opened the Intel Collaborative Research Institute for Secure Computing (ICRI-SC). This institute is the first Intel research center for IT security outside the USA and will be located at the Center for Advanced Security Research in Darmstadt (CASED). Research focuses on the security of embedded systems and mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

The Intel Visual Computing Institute (Intel VCI) is a collaborative effort between Intel, Saarland University, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), Max-Planck Institute for Informatics and Max-Planck Institute for Software Systems. It is part of Saarland University and its offices are located at the Saarbrücken campus. This unique combination of industrial, academic and institutional research ensures the highest quality theoretical foundation on one hand and applicability and relevance on the other.
