Video: Deep Cotton, "We're Far Enough From Heaven Now We Can Freak Out" - Saint Heron
The Deep Cotton duo is down with Janelle Monaé and it shows in they’re quirky, refreshing approach visually and sonically. The undeniably ’60s mod inspired track, “We’re Far Enough From Heaven Now We Can Freak Out” will bring about deep desires to wop it out, or just jam. For a song like this, you know the video is going to be good. The duo, turned captives, attempt to use their charm, charisma, and wild vocals to promote peace amongst a group of powerful, weapon yielding women in a remote land of femdom, Camp Mothaland. Serving up short film, the ingenious video oozes with indie movie potential. [Ed note: as of March 2019, the music video has been removed from all official video sites.]

BBC - 6 Music Recommends Albums Of The Year 2018
What a year of music 2018 has been: Arctic Monkeys went sci-fi, psych inspired a whole new generation, jazz was more exciting than ever and across the board artists were releasing albums so good that we almost failed to notice that there wasn't a Glastonbury this year. Well-established favourites like Low, Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks and Field Music returned in stunning form, while newer acts on the block, from The Orielles and She Drew The Gun to Let’s Eat Grandma, offered us fresh ways to fall in love with music. We've seen acts spawning from other acts (Loma bringing together members of Shearwater and Cross Record, Gabe Gurnsey going solo from Factory Floor), while bands like IDLES have combatted political and personal turmoil with urgent musical response. It's been tough to whittle it down to just 10 top releases, but here are the 6 Music Recommends Albums Of The Year for 2018. We asked our presenters, tallied their votes, and here's their top 10 list. Also, you can find out who made our DJs' lists of personal faves too.

Music of the African diaspora - Wikipedia
Music of the African diaspora was mostly refined and developed during the period of slavery. Slaves did not have easy access to instruments, so vocal work took on new significance. Through chants and work songs people of African descent preserved elements of their African heritage while inventing new genres of music. The culmination of this great sublimation of musical energy into vocal work can be seen in genres as disparate as Gospel Music and Hip-Hop. The music of the African diaspora makes frequent use of ostinato, a motif or phrase which is persistently repeated at the same pitch. The repeating idea may be a rhythmic pattern, part of a tune, or a complete melody.[1] The banjo is a direct decedent of the Akonting created by the Jola people, found in Senegal, Gambia and Guinea-Bissau in West Africa. Hence, the melodic traditions of the African diaspora are probably most alive in Blues and Jazz.

'It was grungy, gritty, rough': the 11-year-old who fronted an 80s post-punk band | Music | The Guardian
nlike many who claim they saw the New York Dolls play Max’s Kansas City in 70s New York, Chandra Oppenheim was actually there – although she was sleeping snugly under a table as her parents watched. She saw Steve Reich live and would attend hog-roast gatherings under the Brooklyn Bridge hosted by the artist Gordon Matta-Clark set to a live soundtrack by Philip Glass (known to the family as Phil). Aged eight, she was delivering performance pieces at the Kitchen, a downtown arts space; by 12, she was the leader of the post-punk band Chandra.

Dynamic range - Wikipedia
Dynamic range, abbreviated DR, DNR,[1] or DYR[2] is the ratio between the largest and smallest values that a certain quantity can assume. It is often used in the context of signals, like sound and light. It is measured either as a ratio or as a base-10 (decibel) or base-2 (doublings, bits or stops) logarithmic value of the difference between the smallest and largest signal values. Electronically reproduced audio and video is often processed to fit the original material with a wide dynamic range into a narrower recorded dynamic range that can more easily be stored and reproduced; This processing is called dynamic range compression.

It's January 1983 and Prince is sitting at the piano in his home studio in Minneapolis. He has a cassette recorder, some spare time and a bunch of songs in his head. Can anyone tell the difference between music files at 128 kbps and 256 kbps?
Record label EMI and Apple announced Monday that iTunes will soon offer premium music files, which come without copy protection and have a bitrate of 256 kbps instead of the usual 128 kbps. The luxury tracks will cost 30 cents more than the standard downloads. Will people be able to hear the difference? Probably not. Studies (PDF) have found that as long as you're using high-quality encoding software, music compressed to a bitrate of 128 kbps or more is "transparent"—in other words, most listeners can't distinguish it from CD quality.

As the lead singer in a punk band, there's something a bit different about Joe Talbot. It's not the word "pops" tattooed on his neck (a tribute to his dad, who hates neck tattoos). It's not the staring intensity when he takes the stage with his band, Idles. What's different about him is that, while earning rave reviews and selling out punk gigs, Joe's also a registered support worker for adults with learning difficulties. The juxtaposition between Joe's work and his artistic life is one of the things explored in my new documentary, The Art of Now: Band Politics for BBC Radio 4.

BBC 6 Music is a digital-only station which prides itself on playing “the cutting edge music of today” alongside “iconic and groundbreaking music of the past 40 years”.

It is considered a great friend to the music industry, with a reputation for taking risks and loyally backing new artists in the UK market.

Janelle Monae Releases Mysterious "Dirty Computer" Trailer-Teaser - Saint Heron
Other than activism and supporting the outstanding releases from her Wondaland artists, it’s been mostly quiet from Janelle Monae after the success of Hidden Figures. Today, the Kansas City-born multi hyphenate announced her latest release “Dirty Computer” with an EMOTION PICTURE trailer-teaser. “They drained us of our dirt, and all the things that made us special. And then you were lost. Sleeping. And you didn’t remember anything at all,” we hear from Monae in monologue over a riveting 34 seconds where she and Tessa Thompson navigate a futuristic world. Little is given (leaving much to be anxious for) with respect to the seemingly dystopian storyline, but from the clips we can tell tender affection, nightlife, action sequences and high fashion coexist throughout.
