my year of mixtapes: Week 42: The Year In Rave—1992 (Part 1)
Ok, so 1992 was pretty much the best year ever for music. The Rave scene was blowing up, and every week it seemed like dozens of amazing records were coming out—way more than little 10-year-old me could buy. This was the year that the UK really took the reins from Belgium & the States w/r/t dance music, and when the idea of "rave music" as a distinct thing from house/techno started to emerge.

Moog Sound Lab | Phantogram | Moog Music Inc
Vocalist/keyboardist Sarah Barthel sings hauntingly through an MF-104Z Analog Delay while playing not one, but two Moog synthesizers. Her left hand is in charge of the Minimoog Voyager Select Series providing big fat bass lines; the Little Phatty Stage II is arpeggiating in latch mode throughout the entire song. It is also being MIDI synced with the drum machine that percussionist Tim Oakley is performing on. In addition to the drum machine, Tim uses the Minimoog Voyager XL for a percussive sound.

Meanwhile, guitarist/vocalist Josh Carter covers both the full sustain and the mute modes of the Moog Guitar. Going through an MF-104Z Analog Delay and the MF-102 Ring Modulator, Josh creates an ethereal backdrop with the tremolo arm of the Moog Guitar..

Our Lady Peace: Curve | PopMatters
And then Mike Turner left. And no matter how many times the band’s members insist his departure didn’t matter all that much, the group’s legacy has subsequently been divided into The Years With Mike Turner and The Years Without Mike Turner. To this day, it’s hard to put a finger on what exactly it is that changed. Gravity, the 2002 album that brought Our Lady Peace its most mainstream success to date behind the infectious “Somewhere Out There”, was guitarist Steve Mazur’s first go-around with the band, and combined with Bob Rock’s production tricks, the effort showcased a decidedly harder sound with a more polished edge. So, you can point to that when trying to figure out where the change came from, if you’d like. But after the disappointing and rushed (their words, not mine) Healthy in Paranoid Times, they erased Rock from the equation and yet Burn Burn, Our Lady Peace’s first DIY-fueled album, still didn’t quite measure up to those first four records.

Grimes (musician) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 2009, Boucher and her then-boyfriend from Tennessee constructed a 20-foot houseboat, named the "Velvet Glove Cast in Iron", with the intention to sail it down the Mississippi River from Minneapolis to New Orleans. The cargo included chickens, a typewriter, 20 pounds of potatoes and a gifted copy of Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. However, the chickens caught eastern equine encephalitis virus and perished soon into the trip. Boucher and her companion adopted the names "Varuschka" and "Zelda Xox" for the trip.[14] Due to engine trouble and subsequent harassment from the Minnesota police, the journey was cut short and the houseboat and chickens were impounded.[14] Their diet consisted mainly of potatoes.[15]

Matt Kantor prepares a nine-course meal inspired by Rush | Appetizer | Life | National Post
Kantor’s ambitious dinner was a testament to his Rush fandom (the New York state native fell in love with the band as a junior-high-school student in the early ’80s and never looked back), and also his latest foray in a culinary crusade. He hopes to help bring what he calls “thinky” food — reminiscent, let’s say, of a well-wrought Neil Peart lyric — to a city whose gastronomic endeavours, he finds, veer closer to the Top 40.

UNDO DEL IUMA « ASCII by Jason Scott
6 years ago, John Gilmore (yes, That John Gilmore) saw that IUMA was in a zombie state and very unlikely to ever get out of the ICU. So he grabbed a copy of all he could – which wasn’t all of it, of course, but it was a hell of a lot of it. He stored them on some backup tapes, and as the site went down, disappeared, and faded into the mists of memory, he looked for a chance to have someone get a copy up somewhere. I was that person.

IUMA (Internet Underground Music Archive) Collection : Free Audio : Download & Streaming : Internet Archive
The Internet Underground Music Archive was better known by the acronym IUMA. The IUMA was started in 1993 by three students at the University of California at Santa Cruz: Jeff Patterson, Jon Luini and Rob Lord. The three men worked together to create an online music archive that would help musicians and bands who weren't signed by a major label. The site allowed these unsigned artists to upload files and send them to fans. The site also enabled the artists the opportunity to talk with their fans. The IUMA was first part of the Usenet newsgroups.

According to documents recently filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, the RIAA was asking for damages of about $72 trillion dollars, a figure that the judge in the case said is "absurd." Judge Kimba Wood wrote in a recent decision that, "An award based on the RIAA calculations would amount to 'more money than the entire music industry has made since Edison's invention of the phonograph in 1877.'"

Kevin J. Anderson will novelize Rush's new album
Prolific novelist Kevin J. Anderson has made no secret of his love for prog rock — and now he's taking his prog-rock fixation to the next level. He announced on his Facebook page that he's writing the novel version of Rush's new album, Clockwork Angels.

Writes Anderson:

After dropping hints for a while, finally the big announcement, a new project unlike any other I've ever done...and something that I consider very cool.

Most of you are aware of my long-standing friendship with Neil Peart, the drummer and lyricist from the legendary rock band Rush, as well as how much Rush has influenced my work. My first novel Resurrection, Inc. was closely inspired by the Rush album Grace Under Pressure, and I can point to dozens of other novels and stories that bear a clear Rush influence.

For more than twenty years, Neil and I have wanted to collaborate on something MAJOR, a way we could tie together our imaginations, and at last that's happening.

I'm writing the novelization of Rush's forthcoming album Clockwork Angels, their first new CD in five years. Imagine if someone had written the novel of The Wall, Tommy, or Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band when those classic albums were released. For Rush fans, CLOCKWORK ANGELS is that project.

I worked together with Neil to flesh out the epic story told over the course of the music, as well as the artist Hugh Syme whose paintings fill the CD booklet. In a young man's quest to follow his dreams, he is caught between the grandiose forces of order and chaos. He travels across a lavish and colorful world of steampunk and alchemy, with lost cities, pirates, anarchists, exotic carnivals, and a rigid Watchmaker who imposes precision on every aspect of daily life. To whet your appetite, Rush released the first two tracks, Caravan and BU2B - listen to those songs to get an idea of the story's beginning.

I'm writing the chapters now, incorporating the lyrics into the narrative, and having a fantastic time. More details to come, but for now-to quote a line from Caravan: "I can't stop thinking big."

Apple II drum sequencer surfaces for chiptune composers -- Engadget
No, this isn't a recycled news item from the 1980s -- it's 2011, and MJ Mahon and 8 Bit Weapon have just announced the release of the Apple II DMS Drummer, a wavetable-based drum sequencer for Apple II-era machines. The monophonic synth reproduces eight drum sounds like bass, snare, rim shot, hand clap, tom, hat open, hat closed and "lazer," along with a sequencer that lets you plug in up to 16 drum patterns across 256 slots. Seems like just the thing for chiptune composers hankering for a way to make authentic eight-bit drum tracks using vintage Apple hardware. System requirements call for an Apple IIe, IIc, IIc+ or IIgs with 80-column capability and a 5.25-inch floppy drive -- you know, pretty modern stuff. A limited demo version is available, but if that doesn't satisfy, you can either buy it on a floppy for $14.95 or download a .dsk disk image for $9.95. Oh, and neither require a time-traveling DeLorean to go back to 1985.

Over 200 labels abandon streaming music and their future | The Verge
NPD Group and NARM (the Music Business Association) recently conducted a study, which concluded that streaming music is damaging to record sales. That information has now caused distributor STHoldings to withdraw all of its music content — that's over 200 labels' worth — from Spotify, Simfy, Rdio, and Napster. STHoldings reported that only four of its labels said they wanted to continue streaming their content. It's a case of confirming exactly what some publishers want to hear: cheaper, user-friendly streaming services might be encroaching on the cushy sales models of years past. The reaction is reminiscent of the industry's bitterly reluctant adoption of the mp3 format in the heyday of CD supremacy, and we all know how that turned out.

An Open Love Letter to My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless | Underwire |
“I just kind of found my own way, and my own feel, my own way of playing,” Shields said of his ax modulations in Mike McGonigal’s book-length analysis of Loveless from 2007. “I found that if there was only one guitar track whilst the vocals were going, split between different amps and mics, the sound was bigger, especially when you use open strings and tunings and the tremolo arm. I didn’t have to consciously think about it; I was able to express this constant feeling of expression. It’s hard to explain the sound of the guitar bending. What you hear is what it is between the sound.”

There are more than a few reasons digital rights management (DRM) has been largely unsuccessful. But the easiest way to explain to a consumer why DRM doesn't work is to put it in terms he understands: "What happens to the music you paid for if that company changes its mind?" Rhapsody just had the next in a line of DRM music services to go--this week the company told its users than anyone with RAX files has unil November 7 to back them up in another format or lose them the next time they upgrade their systems.

"The Blaster Beam is a concept electronic musical instrument consisting of a 12 to 18-foot (5.5 m) long metal beam strung with numerous tensed wires under which are mounted electric guitar pickups which can be moved to alter the sound produced. The instrument is played by striking or plucking the strings with fingers, sticks, pipes or even large objects such as artillery shell casings. The instrument produces a very distinctive bass tone, the sound of which is often described as 'dark' or 'sinister'."

Countercomplex: Defining Computationally Minimal Art (Or, taking the "8" out of "8-Bit")
"The defining element is LOW COMPUTATIONAL COMPLEXITY, as expressed in all aspects of the audiovisual system: the complexity of the platform (i.e. the number of transistors or logic gates in the hardware), the complexity of the software (i.e. the length in bits of the program code and static data), as well as the time complexity (i.e. how many state changes the computational tasks require). A more theoretical approach would eliminate the differentiation of software and hardware and talk about description/program length, memory complexity and time complexity."
