Infovore » A Year of Links
I thought it would be interesting to produce a kind of personal encylopedia: each volume cataloguing the links for a whole year. Given I first used Delicious in 2004, that makes for eight books to date.

YouTube's co-founder to bring Yahoo's Delicious to China|Companies|
The focus now for AVOS, which acquired Delicious from Yahoo in March, will be to improve the bookmark service and bring back its old users while attracting new customers.

"The most important thing is to finish the product first," he said.
Good luck with that.

The Fans Are All Right (Pinboard Blog)
I learned a lot about fandom couple of years ago in conversations with my friend Britta, who was working at the time as community manager for Delicious. She taught me that fans were among the heaviest users of the bookmarking site, and had constructed an edifice of incredibly elaborate tagging conventions, plugins, and scripts to organize their output along a bewildering number of dimensions. If you wanted to read a 3000 word fic where Picard forces Gandalf into sexual bondage, and it seems unconsensual but secretly both want it, and it's R-explicit but not NC-17 explicit, all you had to do was search along the appropriate combination of tags (and if you couldn't find it, someone would probably write it for you). By 2008 a whole suite of theoretical ideas about folksonomy, crowdsourcing, faceted infomation retrieval, collaborative editing and emergent ontology had been implemented by a bunch of friendly people so that they could read about Kirk drilling Spock.

This is what I wish Delicious had done with Twitter. has this built-in, by the way. "This site provides a simple bookmarking service. We follow your twitter feed, and whenever one of your tweets contains URLs, we add them to your bookmarks. Optionally, bookmark URLs in @replies to you. We'll even add a delicious tag identifying the sender if you like."

I've had thoughts similar to this: "I’ve avoided having an automated bookmark posting plugin here, but now that Delicious allows 1000 character comments, it makes a good micro-blogging tool. So some Delicious posts should appear here and I’m going to take them out of the sidebar."

Recent system:has:shortcut Bookmarks on Delicious
"Recent system:has:shortcut Bookmarks" Still one of my favorite hidden Delicious features, partially because I wrote a version of it. Essentially a server-side rendition of Firefox's keyword shortcuts. Bookmark something tagged shortcut:foo, include a %s placeholder in the URL, then search for "!foo bar" and be redirected to the bookmarked URL with %s replaced by "bar". Good for search engine URLs and other command-line-esque URLs. It becomes especially handy if you have Delicious search installed in your search bar. This particular bookmark shows other bookmarks tagged with the shortcut: convention

How Yahoo dropped the ball with a pointless 3 year rewrite (from mod_perl to PHP) :
I'm on pretty much the same page as Joshua. I was amazed it launched, which is a credit to the remaining team of heroes. It'll be interesting to see what happens now—given a 2-3 year innovation time-debt, a brand-new bespoke infrastructure, and a load of enqueued we'll-fix-it-laters. Selected joshu quotes: "I think the open question now is whether the remaining team will be able to innovate or be stuck in complicated codebase hell. ... I have significant regret over what ended up happening with Delicious. We could have gone so much farther. ... engineering was focused on the rewrite so nobody had time to replace the old search engine ... They had the technology, but the relevant staff had higher priorities."
