This Soldier Knows - odetteandodile, WitchyLurker - Captain America (Movies), Marvel Cinematic Universe [Archive of Our Own]
Bucky doesn’t fall and Steve doesn’t crash. The Howling Commados take out the remaining Hydra bases…and then they go home, just like all the other allied soldiers. Throughout the war, they discuss what each of them would do if they make it back again. The only person Steve doesn’t ask is Bucky. He’s afraid of the answer.

Steve himself isn’t sure if he knows how to do anything but be a soldier and a weapon anymore, but remembering the promise he made he vows to try to be just a good man again.

He buys a farm in Washington state, and tries to relearn how to be at peace.

(Featuring: Steve as a bearded farmer, two rescued puppies, badass Peggy Carter speaking truth, the Howling Commandos doing the same, an apple orchard, soldier homecoming angst, and two dumb boys waiting way too long to talk it out–but don’t worry, they do.) //

As the summary says, it's an AU. This is a complete series, with fics from both Steve and Bucky's POVs and both are an utter delight. Highly recommended

despite the threatening sky and shuddering earth (they remained) - praximeter (Zimario) - Captain America (Movies) [Archive of Our Own]
“They really didn’t want the mask to come off.” Hill thumbed through the scans, and pulled out a film that she then handed over to Sam, face mostly expressionless but for the flat line of her pursed lips.

Sam accepted the film and held it up to the light, angling so both he and Steve could see it, squinting at the outline of the Winter Soldier’s skull, and the blips of unnatural white that showed up, God, in his brain, not to mention about half his teeth, plus the mask, with its thin protrusions—

“Those are pins,” Steve realized. He looked over at Hill. “The mask—it’s nailed to his face.”

Hill’s face was as unmoved as ever. “Like I said. They really didn’t want it coming off.”

// Completely absorbing. A tough read due to the body horror/body modification and recovery themes, but just so well written and handled so sensitively.

Happy Accidents - BetteNoire (WeAreWolves) - Captain America (Movies) [Archive of Our Own]
Bucky's still in cryo. Steve is in New York, angry and unsettled. And then Trump takes a photo in front of a Captain America mural like Steve has ever supported anything he says or does. So Steve enlists Pepper to throw a costume gala for LGBTQIA causes, and to celebrate his coming out.

It's a terrible idea, especially when a bunch of people come dressed as Bucky.

But then Steve meets a tall dark stranger... //

Via talitha78: Note this isn't really a political story, except for a few paragraphs at the beginning--instead it's REALLY hot identity porn/ actual porn. (Not that I mind anti-Trump fic, but if that's what you're looking for, it's not really that, and if you're avoiding all mention of Cheeto Mussolini, it's easy to skip over).

Status Quo Ante - Domenika Marzione (domarzione) - Multifandom [Archive of Our Own]
A tale in which Sam suspects he should be used to this by now, for values of 'this' that involve certain folks he hangs out with and situations he finds himself in, Team Cap becomes Team Ex-Cap becomes TBD, and nobody but Clint really wants to know what happened to Scott Lang's GI Joes.

(Sam Wilson from the final scene to the mid-credits scene.) //

One of the best codas to this film.

The Murder Ballads - WeAreWolves - Marvel Cinematic Universe [Archive of Our Own]
Something wicked is coming for Steve Rogers. Luckily for him, something even more wicked stands in its way: the unrepentant, unbroken Bucky Barnes.

A murder-mystery/action thriller with violence, magic, and several big MCU guest stars. //

This is fascinating. A story in which Bucky was fully aware of his actions and complicit in them. And yet still a love story. Lovely.

I'll build a house inside of you - magdaliny - Captain America (Movies), The Avengers (Marvel Movies), Marvel Cinematic Universe [Archive of Our Own]
Natalia is stacking blocks very carefully when the adults come into the room. None of them look at her, because they're all looking at her father. He's wearing combat gear, and the hair on the left side of his head is slicked back with blood. He smells like smoke and something unnameable, sweet and dark and a little sickly in her nose.

Father is saying, “Don't be ridiculous. The only thing children are good at is disobeying.” //

Per victoria.p: AU where Natasha is still raised in the Red Room and trained by the Winter Soldier, but he's a father figure for her. He breaks his programming enough to escape with her to America, where they start over again. Lovely

Sincerely, Your Pal - lettered - Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America (Movies), Captain America [Archive of Our Own]
"[...] lesbians and gay men writing letters to their lovers and friends faced the special problem of wartime censorship. Military censors, of course, cut out all information that might aid the enemy, but this surveillance made it necessary for gay and lesbian correspondents to be careful not to expose their homosexuality. To get around this, gay men befriended sympathetic censors or tricked others by using campy phrases, signing a woman’s name (like Dixie or Daisy), or changing the gender of their friends. Sailors became WAVEs, boyfriends became WACs, Robert became Roberta. There must exist, hidden in closets and attics all over America, a huge literature of these World War II letters between lesbians and between gay men that would tell us even more about this important part of American history." - Coming Out Under Fire: The History of Gay Men and Women In World War Two, by Allan Berube //

Into That Good Night - Nonymos - Multifandom [Archive of Our Own]
Steve Rogers has lived for entirely too long—long enough to see the world's end. The heroes are gone, and the Earth is pushing what's left of mankind towards the exit.

But when a makeshift team rises from the ashes, when a mysterious presence all but drags Steve there, he begins to think there may be hope yet. As they shoot for the stars one last time, Steve will get proof yet again that the future is nothing if not an echo of the past. //

Wow. Just....wow. This was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Absolutely must read.
ETA: Well, a ton of similarities to Interstellar, now that I've seen the movie, but still a good fic.

United States v. Barnes, 617 U.S. 143 (2015) by fallingvoices, radialarch
Via reccer: Love love love this clever fic about Bucky's post-CATWS trial told from the POVs of news articles, court transcripts, and Twitter. Somehow all the characters' voices really come through, and when the trial reveals ~the shocking truth~ about Steve and Bucky's relationship, the public reacts, sometimes bad, sometimes good.

COYLE: Mr. Stark. Tell us about how your parents died.

STARK: For the longest time, I thought — I thought they died in a car accident. Turns out that was wrong. Now they’re telling me that somebody killed them.

COYLE: And can you tell us if that somebody is in this room?

STARK: You know, about eight years ago, I was in Afghanistan — long story short, I was captured. Some of you might remember, it was on the news.

[quiet laughter]

STARK: They told me they wanted — they told me to build a missile for them. And — I’ve never told anyone this, this is how you know I’m serious — they put my head in water. Wouldn’t let me get back up.

COYLE: Mr. Stark.

STARK: Very effective method of torture, I’ll tell you. Because it took me less than five minutes to say yes. [He clears his throat.] And there are tapes on the web now. We know what they did to — to Barnes. Hello, by the way, I don’t think we’ve met. [He nods at the defendant.] So my answer is no. My parents’ murderer might be dead, might be sitting in this room — I’m still trying to figure that out — but he is not the man standing trial.

Mission Parameters | what_alchemy
The soldier does not find the Mission. The soldier finds a tow-headed white child, aged approximately five years, unconscious and naked amid the empty Captain America uniform lying charred and bloody in the middle of what used to be a battleground. The soldier finds an expanse of bruised flesh and stubborn cowlicks that shine through the fog in his head.

The soldier lifts the child up and slings it under one arm before running.

The man on the bridge - boopboop - Captain America (Movies), The Avengers (Marvel) - All Media Types [Archive of Our Own]
Steve Rogers turning up at Tony's door in the middle of the night might be a bit out of character, but it's not completely out of the realm of possibility. Stranger things have happened.

Steve Rogers turning up at Tony's door with an amnesiac assassin - who may or may not have some of Tony's personally designed hardware attached where his arm should be - well that's just far too interesting to turn away, even if Tony is trying to avoid all things S.H.I.E.L.D these days. //

This entire series is excellent and the author's not done yet! (\0/)
