This Lego Wear pop-up shop in London requires Snapchat
Lego Wear is helping with the launch of a pop-up shop in London. The interesting thing about this shop is it has nothing in it - no merchandise whatsoever - save for a Snapcode. While at first you might think this is expensive real estate, even for a pop-up, the idea is that once customers open their Snapchat app and scan this code they’ll be in for a shopping experience unlike any other.

What is Snapchat, how does it work, and what is it used for?
Once the Snapcode is scanned, users will have access to the entire store through their Snapchat app. Looking through their phone users will see an augmented reality fashion boutique. The store will appear loaded with limited-edition clothing items for adults. Included in the augmented reality experience is an interactive DJ booth, an arcade, and Lego mannequins that model the clothes.

Scandit Marries AR, IoT To Boost eCommerce | PYMNTS.com
For the user, think of it as an eCommerce experience in an in-store setting, said the CEO, but which can be extended to logistics, healthcare and government. Computer vision, Mueller said, “offers the universal means to identify the presence of an object, identify what type of object it might be and then keep track of it,” all while the person wielding Scandit’s technology looks at the object from various perspectives, locations and angles.

The movement to that holistic, data-rich view has come as barcode scanners have evolved, moving toward mobile devices and phones that have cameras, of course — making information capture possible. For Scandit, he said, barcode scanning can represent a jumping-off point for retailers seeking to enhance in-store productivity and the consumer experience.

QR Codes Reignite Loyalty Programs | PYMNTS.com
Until recently, the QR code was one of the great contenders in the race to ignite mobile commerce. But according to new reserach from Juniper, the humble QR code may be facing a rich second life as a driver of mobile loyalty.

New data released by the firm indicated that 1.3 billion mobile QR code coupons were estimated to have been redeemed last year, and the figure is set to grow by a lot — to 5.3 billion by 2022. Juniper also assigned a 2022 deadline for 4 billion mobile-enabled loyalty cards being activated by 2022 — nearly doubling the 2017 rate.

The QR-based coupon redemptions, according to Juniper, will occur across 1 billion phones and take a major boost from the fact that Apple has finally decided to include a QR code scanner in its iPhone product.

British lifestyle brand Cath Kidston’s collaboration with Pinterest leverages the latter’s visual discovery tool Lens. This uses image-recognition tech to directly match whatever a user points their smartphone at to on-site ‘Pins’.

As the first UK brand to use Lens, the move – which connects the brand’s physical spaces to its social presence – exemplifies the type of dual-platform engagement discussed in Social Media to Store.

Apple finally wakes up to QR codes, but it’s too late | TechCrunch
Apple, ever the late adopter, has added QR reading to its camera in what is the latest example of the U.S. company seemingly following a trend with blind optimism that it’ll work out for the best.

QR codes have never been an established thing in the U.S., the country where Apple’s influence and marketshare is highest worldwide, but in Asia — particularly in China — it is a well-established means to enabling payments, website discovery and more. Companies use QR codes on subway advertising in China to drive app downloads or website visits, for example. The humble QR code also enables point-of-sale payment via Alibaba’s hugely popular Alipay mobile payment app or the payment facility within Tencent’s blockbuster WeChat app, two services with over 500 million users.

The iPhone’s camera app can now read QR codes | TechCrunch
Remember when QR codes were the next big thing? In the U.S. you used to be able to find them on billboards, business cards — you name it. They were supposed to change the way we use our devices. Remember CurrentC? But the technology never really caught on stateside, mainly because users had to download a totally separate third-party app to scan them, and the whole system was pretty clunky.

But according to some reports on Twitter, QR codes in the U.S. are about to get a second chance, because the first iOS 11 beta has the ability to read QR codes via the native camera app. That means any iPhone users will be able to open their camera, point it at a QR code, and receive a prompt to follow a URL.

QR codes are back! But are they really better than before? | Mobile Marketer
Pepsi, Jeep, Snapchat, Pinterest, Facebook Messenger, Spotify. The list of brands and platforms recently making a commitment to QR codes is impressive, especially considering that not too long ago they were widely disparaged as unattractive and not useful for either consumers or marketers.

The return of QR codes reflects how mobile marketing has grown more sophisticated in the past few years. The quick growth of Snapchat, for example, has put a deeply integrated QR code reader into the hands of 161 million savvy smartphone owners. In another sign of mobile’s maturation, Pokemon Go’s surprise success last summer suggests that users are interested in engaging with the real world using their devices.

Some things haven’t changed since QR codes were last a trend. Marketers are still hungry for ways to measure their digital efforts and prove there’s an attractive return on their investments. Additionally, marketers continue to seek out best practices for merging their online and offline efforts. With no runaway winners apparent, many may be willing to give QR codes another try.

Maybe I’m wrong about their pending obsolescence, though. Scanning a QR code is a gesture, and all gestures (taking a selfie, 1–4 kisses on the cheek) can be awkward to learn. Heinz’ once-and-done approach to QR codes backfires - Mobile Marketer - Social networks
The mistake stems from a campaign contest created by Heinz that used QR code technology and took place from 2012 to 2014. Once the contest expired, so did the domain rights of the Web address the code directed to, with a porn site taking over.

The porn site taking over the address means that any customer scanning the old QR codes now will unknowingly be directed to the explicit Web site. For a product with a long shelf life and a strong appeal to families, this is a major problem. With the social media field giving consumers a much louder voice, this kind of mistake can cause a lot of pain and agony for these brands.

Powa tells me that it’s signed up some 240 brands to the product so far — including large retailers like French-based supermarket giant Carrefour and Universal Music. To coincide with the launch, the app is now live, but Dan Wagner — the CEO and founder, who is also a repeat entrepreneur in the e-commerce space — tells me commercial deployments will only be rolling out gradually over the next couple of months.

Weetabix Forced to Remove App for Making Kids Feel Inferior
Whole grain breakfast cereal Weetabix has been told to take down its WeetaKid app after the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruled that it was exploiting children’s credulity and vulnerability.

The iOS app used QR codes in conjunction with two games, where the player controlled the WeetaKid hero in order to collect items and build different parts of the world. As reported by Yahoo, the issue was that the game actively encouraged buying boxes of Weetabix in order to fuel the character. A message would display at the top of the screen asking the player if they had a box ready in order to scan the QR code and if they said no, the following messages might appear:

Ric Ferraro's Blog: RIP QR Codes –why code-based scanning will give way to image recognition for mobile apps
The new way of recognizing images within adverts (in posters, magazine ads or on packaged goods) is by Image Recognition. Catchoom (based in Spain) is leading the way in this, using a Cloud-based recognition system to achieve image matching in under 0.5 seconds. The user simply points their smartphone’s camera at the image (for example, a logo), Catchoom processes the information with its patented image recognition algorithms, and hey presto! In less than a second, you get a weblink, an image or a video appearing on the phone screen. Compared to QR Codes, the technology really kicks ass, because what are known as “false positives” are vastly reduced. This means, around 99% of users pointing at an image to be recognized will get a perfect match and see the information the publisher has created.

QR code scans jumped 50pc on Black Friday: report - Mobile Marketer - Research
Overall, ScanLife saw over a quarter of a million scans completed between 7 p.m. eastern time on Thanksgiving Day and 7 p.m. eastern time on Black Friday using the ScanLife app, making it the busiest day to date for mobile bar code traffic.

The numbers also suggest QR codes are shaping up to be a good way for marketers to deliver rebate offers, with the single best QR code marketing campaign powered by the ScanLife system on Black Friday delivering a promotional rebate offer for a popular DVD title.

By category, the consumer electronics and retail industries saw the most mobile bar code scans on Black Friday.

Other key findings include that during the third quarter, almost 4 million new people scanned mobile bar codes, representing a 45 percent increase over the same period last year.

QR code best practice from Toyota | Econsultancy
Overall this is one of the best uses of QR codes that I’ve come across. The technology is often derided as a stopgap until something better comes along, but that’s largely down to the fact that marketers aren’t using it correctly.

Advertisers need to keep in mind that QR codes are just the delivery method and that it’s the content that defines the user experience.

P&G focus marketing on mobile QR codes | Chris Reed on Partnership Marketing | Brand Republic blogs
The QR codes are displayed prominently in each advert. Customers are then taken to a specially created mobile site ªªhttp://www.pgtryit.com/ toºº find out more and purchase directly should they wish to do so.

There is a great logic to this campaign which more brands should follow. The most effective print ads will then be focused on delivering responses and the print ads that didn’t generate enough interest, downloads, visits or purchases will be downgraded.

PayPal Tests QR Codes In Shop Windows; Mobile Check-Ins At Stores For Personalized Service | TechCrunch
PayPal is rolling out a number of payments pilots this week in international markets, showcasing the company’s mobile payments technologies. We’ve seen PayPal test payments technologies before larger rollouts — the company recently did this with its in-store payments technology at Home Depot and a deal with McDonald’s.

In Australia, four mid-size retailers are launching an in-store payments technology with PayPal. Using the PayPal mobile app, customers can check-in to a store and then place an order and pay using their PayPal account. The merchant is able to see the name and photo ID of checked-in customers via their point of sale terminal, which supports customer identification for security purposes. PayPal says that this allows merchants to provide personalized service to customers, as well as integrate them into loyalty programs. It’s similar in theory to Square’s Pay With Square functionality.

How Apple And Google Could Make QR Codes Mainstream | TechCrunch
So what’s the ideal solution, assuming the goal is to get people to actually use these codes? My suggestion would be to make the camera software just a little bit smarter.

To truly take QR codes to the mainstream, Apple and Google should actually build a scanner into the camera logic. Similar to how the camera senses how much light there is, or if a picture is in focus, it could scan whether or not a QR code was in the frame. This would essentially turn your camera into a constant QR scanner.

If a QR code happens to be in the frame, a message would pop up asking if you’d like to follow the link. If you hit ignore, QR codes would be ignored until the next time you launch the app. No separate app, no new behavior. Just an extension of existing behavior. And of course, you could always turn this off in settings. - via Crissy

ReadWriteWeb Technology DeathWatch: QR Codes
User Error: For most users, scanning QR codes isn’t all that easy. Many smartphones still require users to download a custom code reading app. The odds that the average user will do so when presented with a code to scan are pretty minimal. The chances the same user will go back home and download the app later? Even for users with an integrated QR code reader, the process still isn’t sufficiently automated. On my Android phone, the process involves five steps, the fourth of which is completely unintuitive.

QR Box Store Opens Doors In The Hague — The Pop-Up City
Some time ago we featured the box store — a micro-shopping concept from Asia. Twiet.nu is the digital version. The sellers do not only share the costs of expensive display space at an attractive shopping location, they also share digital exposure. Each vendor has his/her own box to promote products offline, but profits from the collective digital services of the concept at the same time. The monthly fee of €129 for a box also includes a social media package of two tweets and two Facebook posts. This way Twiet.nu claims to combine both online and offline promotion.
