Netflix knows the exact episode of a TV show that gets you hooked | The Verge
"Netflix's point, of course, is that its method of releasing an entire season of a TV show all at once is a much better way to win over fans. Whereas a pilot may get some people to come back the next week, letting viewers watch through a few episodes in a row appears to be a smarter way of ensuring that they'll return. "We found that no one was ever hooked on the pilot," Ted Sarandos, Netflix's content chief, says in a statement. "This gives us confidence that giving our members all episodes at once is more aligned with how fans are made.""

How to Launch a Podcast | 4-Step Process
I read that Netflix can tell when you'll turn from a casual watcher to a binger on any particular series. The reason is what they call the "hook" episode.

This blog post purports to tell you how to create 3 pillar podcasts that serve as a hook for your audience.

Internet Marketing Super Friends
"I've been in this group for a few years and I've learned a lot. Never feel like I've 'given back' so tonight I want to share something that happened recently and it's been more powerful than all 'marketing' I've ever done - combined. This silly little picture that my son and I took has: - Had over 10 million views - Taken my page likes from 6,200 to over 18,000 - Added over 700 names to my email list - Brought hundreds of new members to my program - Been shared almost 170,000 times - Shown me, first person, the power of viral Maybe it'll inspire you to create something kind of fun/silly, lightly brand it, and give it wings to fly. And then again, maybe it was just a fluke."

Show Your Home to Potential Buyers Via an In-House Rollercoaster - Core77
"That's an actual house for sale in Ermelo, Holland. The rollercoaster was put together by Dutch bank ABN AMRO, which this month is running promotional events for their customers looking to sell their houses. Not all of them will get rollercoasters, of course; the bulk of the promotions will be bus stop posters, highway billboards, Facebook ads and the like, but the rollercoaster vid is presumably meant to provide the viral juice (with us falling right into the bank's clever clutches)." ......................... Interesting because this was sponsored by what seems like a local small clothing store, but the video is on Buzzfeed and being shared on Facebook, so it's gotten them some good exposure. Similar to the Arab car repair ad bookmarked 2013-05-07

DHL Pranks Competitors To Deliver Boxes Reading DHL Is Faster | VIDEO - YouTube
DHL wrapped packages in thermo-active foil, froze them below freezing, so the foil turned black and then shipped them with a competitor (Fedex, UPS, etc) - by the time the packages were in their system, the packages had un-frozen and now displayed the message (in huge letters) "DHL is faster" ---- to top if all off, the packages were sent to hard-to-find addresses in high traffic areas, such to ensure maximum exposure in seeing a DHL competitor employee carrying a huge "DHL is faster" box through throngs of people.

Sorry, But You Don't Love Viral Ads Enough
frameworks-for-marketing = always remember the advertising funnel and the fact that different types of ads have different purposes -- and some of those purposes take years to have an effect. ................................. Not all viral ads translate to sales increases. Kmart was down 2.1% in the year their three "Ship My Pants, et al" ads went viral. ................................ The problem, is what I've said all along. Many companies have this disconnect between marketing and reality. When the two align, magical things can happen. But the as this one analyst quoted in the article says "" I almost think that the ads are hurting them I almost think that the ads are hurting them," he says. "The ads suggest it's back, but when you walk into the stores, it's the same old thing. It's a bait and switch.""

Guy Kawasaki - Timeline Photos
Stupid as a strategy http://ift.tt/1932yT1 ........... "Wendy’s has scored a Facebook and Twitter hit with a campaign that leverages the one factor that reliably gets social media users to laugh with you rather than at you: Unbelievably dumb stuff that’s blow-milk-out-your-nose funny.... For the roll-out of its new Pretzel Pub Chicken sandwich, Wendy’s has created a campaign so hilariously bad that it simply must be talked about. In #PretzelLoveStories, actors in a nonsensical, telenovela-style soap opera recite diners’ tweets about the new menu item. The first video featured a love triangle at the altar, as two men vie for the bride’s hand. In possibly the funniest line, one suitor declares “Ommm…Guh,” as he fumbles how to say the popular abbreviation OMG."

Dating App Tinder Catches Fire - Businessweek
"but it might never have caught fire if not for Justin Mateen’s marketing plan. Facebook famously got its start by launching at elite colleges; Tinder did the same, but at elite party schools. When the app went live on Sept. 14, 2012, Mateen targeted the University of Southern California, Playboy’s second-ranked party school of 2012, where he and Rad had become best friends, as well as the University of California at Los Angeles, and colleges in Texas and Boston. Seeding the network with the right kind of users, i.e. attractive women, was critical."

3 Despicable Internet Behaviors (That Are Really Your Fault) | Cracked.com
The importance of headlines:
"The Chicago Sun Times, where the story originated, initially led with the header, "Inquiry into Research Facility Holds Up 18 Human Heads at O'Hare." Then Fox News felt comfortable enough tweaking the story to "18 Human Heads Found at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport," and finally Gawker tested the full elasticity of the truth by titling it "18 Severed Human Heads Discovered in Package at Airport; Everyone Being Very Chill About It," because they know that the only way to ensure that people read it is to make the story into something startling enough to become viral."

Minority rules: Scientists discover tipping point for the spread of ideas
"When the number of committed opinion holders is below 10 percent, there is no visible progress in the spread of ideas. It would literally take the amount of time comparable to the age of the universe for this size group to reach the majority," said SCNARC Director Boleslaw Szymanski, the Claire and Roland Schmitt Distinguished Professor at Rensselaer. "Once that number grows above 10 percent, the idea spreads like flame.""

How to Mystify Drive-Thru Employees [VIDEO]
marketing-social-media-campaigns = Excellent example of a "boring" or at least "common" profession taking an outside-the-box route in promoting itself via social media. We watch this and think of it as an interesting viral video, but view it from the flip side and it appears as a well-crafted video designed to display magic in a way that makes us want to watch it (because of the unusual situation and reactions of the drive-thru employees)... Had he just posted "how to" videos or even just demonstrated the tricks without showing how they were done, we would not be watching this.

Dollar Shave Club Video Also Used to Woo Investors

Case Study: How Google Sells Its Free Products
There are some celebrity spots (like Maria Sharapova pelting helmeted reps with tennis balls), but many of the submissions come from independent groups (like Sony) or everyday people trying to out-do their competition. Submissions are screened by Google and then randomly paired against one another where users can vote for their favorites.
