NetPotionNr9 comments on Red light camera industry fights to prevent citizen vote
"Ever since Al Gore capitulated the vote he would have won and we got a court appointed incompetent to lead us into thoroughly becoming infected with the virus al Qaeda injected. The bush administration with all it's incompetents and degenerates was the true sleeper cell that Al Qaeda couldn't never have even dreamt of. One day it will maybe dawn on people that Al Qaeda was probably the most successful venture in all of humanity; a few ragtag dirt rats took advantage of massive security gaps that had a far higher risk of failure than success and injected us with the self destructive crack of every "terrorist's" dream, and the biggest power humanity has ever seen has been freebasing ever since. It's kind of like if a hood rat drug dealer got his hooks into Warren Buffet and he just handed over everything in self destructive free fall."

Secrecy at the Border - On The Media
1) Ship laptops and other devices separately from your person. 1.1) Full, encrypted laptop backup in the cloud 1.2) Full laptop encryption 1.optional) Do the TrueCrypt thing: encrypt only part of the hard drive on a hidden partition. This will make the hard drive appear smaller than what the physical label on the outside of the hard drive says, so get a label made to match the new size (or the "public", unencrypted portion of the hard drive.) ================= 2) Full cell backup & encryption 2.1) Remove anything "private" - Gmail, Goog Docs, private pics 2.2) Have a plan to get a temporary/disposable phone at your new destination 2.3) Forward Google Voice to the new ph# 2.optional) Use a decoy cell phone. Hide or ship your main phone. ================= 3) Tell multiple (non-traveling) family and friends when and where you are traveling, things to do if you disappear, in waves (for example: day 1: notify employer, family, feed petse, etc) after 1 week: these bills are due, day 10:

Is Obama worse than Bush? That's beside the point | Gary Younge | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk
This is what I've always thought. Everyone who ends up in that position essentially does the same thing. It's the system. Not that you can't blame these guys, but you really can't expect much difference from one to the next. Sad. The system must be changed. -------> "Obama's transformation from national security dove to hawk is the norm: any president is captive to America's imperial power"

Schneier on Security: Government Secrets and the Need for Whistle-blowers
"Democracy requires an informed citizenry in order to function properly, and transparency and accountability are essential parts of that. That means knowing what our government is doing to us, in our name. That means knowing that the government is operating within the constraints of the law. Otherwise, we're living in a police state."

After Boston: Don't Get Fooled Again by the 'War on Terror' Hawks - Conor Friedersdorf - The Atlantic
Yes, of course terrorism is real. But that doesn't mean the hawkish approach to counterterrorism hasn't been discredited.
