Catherine Crump: The small and surprisingly dangerous detail the police track about you | Talk Video | TED.com
License plate readers are everywhere, tracking & more importantly storing license plate information of average citizens. Even worse, individual police department data is aggregated and stored by the federal government, creating a huge big-brother database of the movement & interactions of citizens.

Christopher Ryan: Are we designed to be sexual omnivores? | Talk Video | TED.com
Couldn't have said it better myself. These are all things that I have thought (and lived), but as I tend to, I generally thought I was the odd man out and was just being silly, selfish or something else. Luckily, after discovering MovNat and evolutionary theory, I've had more confidence in my ideas ideas on these matters, but it's still nice to have a TEDtalk to point people to when they think you're just a chauvinist.

Meaghan Ramsey: Why thinking you're ugly is bad for you | Talk Video | TED.com
Kids today are looking to the outside for validation - not much different than previous generations, but the tools at their disposal and the default "always on" nature of the internet make it much more dangerous. ........ FACT: No matter how you ACTUALLY look or how much you ACTUALLY weigh, your performance suffers if you feel ugly or if you feel overweight.

Eric Liu: Why ordinary people need to understand power | Talk Video | TED.com
This very much fits into the paradigm of improving your city. I don't have a tag for "civics" and I can't think of a related tag that I do have... Keep it in mind and if you think of something, add it later. ............................ Not 100% related, but also see "The 48 Laws Of Power" by Robert Greene (I have the PDF)

The Violence Within Us : TED Radio Hour : NPR
I only heard from segments 2 onward, but it was fascinating. The Jim Fallon part was amazing because it ends with his brain having the same characteristics as those brains of deranged killers that he studied, but he was missing the early trauma that they had... meaning that he could easily have been a killer, if that missing ingredient had been present. ............... Part 3 with Leslie Morgan Steiner about domestic violence / domestic abuse is REALLY worth hearing.

Nancy Duarte: The secret structure of great talks | Video on TED.com
This reminds me of the Simon Sinek talk "How Great Leaders Communicate" ............ At some point in the conversation she uses a metaphor about sailing and says that if you adjust your boat into the wind at the proper angle, you'll paradoxically travel faster than the wind is moving. She uses this analogy to say how you need to "weigh down" your idea with the detractors in order to get it to fly. Reminds me of the analogy I used with Maria about how a kite will not fly higher if you let go of the string. Paradoxically, it needs a weight pulling it down in order to fly its highest. If you let it go, it will fall instantly.

Sally Kohn: Let’s try emotional correctness | Video on TED.com
A TEDtalk on how opposite sides of the political spectrum can communicate with each other. The key is coming to the table with the same compassion you would like them to have for you. She says Sean Hannity is emotionally correct. Not sure what she means by that, since I don't quite understand where his compassion is.

Sandra Aamodt: Why dieting doesn't usually work | Video on TED.com
counterintuitive = She talks about diets doing more harm than good throughout the talk, but at 11:00, she specifically says it. .................... cognitive-load = As one of the comments says: "Will power is limited and gets exhausted when the attention is distracted." That in itself sums up her talk and this line can be used in any walk of life.
