The Blog of Ben Rockwood
"For example, why would I buy this old SunBlade 150 – 650Mhz/ 512MB RAM/ 1×80GB HDD/ onboard PGX64 Video/ DVD for $1,195.00 when I could buy a brand new Sun Ultra 20 workstation that blows the hell out of the SunBlade for only $895? =============================== REPLY: You do realize that for less than the Blade 150, you can get a Sun Blade 2000 that will blow the 150 out of the water? [[http://www.anysystem.com/sunb120602gb...]] Some people also prefer SPARC processors to Opteron/x86-based systems. There are still some things (such as heavy I/O load) that SPARC boxes do better. "

Burn CDs With the Solaris[TM] 8 Operating Environment
While optional, configuring a cdrecord startup file, /etc/default/cdrecord, will save time in the future. This startup configuration file can hold information that cdrecord will need every time it's used, such as the CD recorder's speed, device name, the preferred buffer size, and so on. Alternately, these options can be entered into the command line before every use.

InformIT: Burn CDs with the Solaris™ 8 Operating Environment > CD to CD
A simple command-line program, cdrecord, makes burning CDs with Solaris software quick, simple, and cost-effective. The cdrecord program, which works for both SPARC™ and Intel architecture systems, is included on the Solaris Software Companion CD (Update 2 and higher), and is also available for free download from http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/freeware/download.html.

Other Sun Hardware - SunPCI won't start in 2010 "Your system time appears to be set in the future. I can't believe its really Tue Jan 5 08:24:19 2010. Please set the time correctly"
The problem you are observing is being addressed in CR 6913785, which was opened on Dec 31, 2009 when 4 other customer's called with the same issue (there has been quite a few more cases since then). The problem is in the sunpci binary and engineering thinks they are close to having a fix available very soon, but we'll see. As I am now your case owner, I'll let you know when I get an update, and with all the cases being opened, there should be one soon. I will also add this SR to the bug during my work hours on Tuesday.

ALOM’s, ILOM’s, and Systems Controllers (Oh, MY!) @ Wolves at YOUR door
These devices more and more rely on commodity operating systems (microkernel linux, etc) (which carry with them the same vulnerabilities and exploits). There is a great deal of restriction with what end users of these devices can do with them. Updates are few and far between, if updates are put in place at all.

This device controls other more important devices and is subject to a good subset of the same vulnerabilities that any workstation is but it is almost impossible to put it in a patch regime much less maintain or harden it. Many embedded devices for healthcare have reportedly been infected by Conficker (among others).

In those cases, they just got infected with commodity malware and behaved like your typical infected host. The scary part of this is, these devices can control very important things.

Does anybody have any suggestions?
