With 9 Short Words, Google Just Made a Stunning Announcement That Will Change Everything You Think About Google | Inc.com
"By the way, one of the many things Facebook did to combat the rise of Google+?

It bought a scrappy photo-sharing social network that had started at basically the exact same time as Google+, with just two coders who at first attracted total of $500,000 in investment, built their app in just eight weeks, and wound up millions of users overnight.

You might have heard of it. It's called Instagram."

Vans Warped Tour doesn’t go out quietly | Boston Herald
"
Well, that’s that.

After a spectacular 23-year run, 1,500 or so bands and the launch of a cultural youth movement, the Vans Warped Tour wrapped up its final stop ever in Massachusetts. Let the record show that the last local edition was closed out with a bombshell set by Las Vegas alt-metal/punk heroes Falling in Reverse.

The traveling rock festival — the largest and longest running in the U.S. — was created by punk visionary and former Lollapalooza stage manager Kevin Lyman and started inauspiciously with its first show in 1995 in Boise, Idaho. That year, the festival featured a young Gwen Stefani and No Doubt, Sublime, Deftones, L7 and many more. Locally, the first Warped Tour was held at Northampton Airport. In 1996, the tour took on its permanent sponsor, skate company Vans (which has a unique local connection in that its founder, 83-year-old Paul Van Doren, is from Braintree), and has since been known as the Vans Warped Tour.

Over the years, the punk-metal-ska-rap-rock cavalcade was held in various fairgrounds, parking lots and venues across Massachusetts, including Suffolk Downs in East Boston, Brockton, Barnstable, Gillette Stadium and most often, the Xfinity Center in Mansfield. The festival annually featured anywhere from 50 to 70 bands and has hosted a who’s who of ’90s and 2000s stars, including Katy Perry (yup), Kid Rock, Green Day, Blink 182, Billy Idol, the Black Eyed Peas, Eminem, N.E.R.D., Fall Out Boy, G- Eazy, Ice T, Linkin Park, M.I.A. and Yelawolf.

For Massachusetts bands, it’s always been a summer staple, as many of the region’s biggest acts have toured on Warped, including Killswitch Engage, Godsmack, All That Remains, Dropkick Murphys, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Staind and Unearth, who were part of Friday’s final edition.

The tour has always been a one-stop shopping eclectic mix of emerging bands, chart-topping acts and punk and metal’s old guard. I’ve covered the Warped Tour dozens of times over the years for the Herald and have had my own memorable days, including seeing Kid Rock on an empty side stage just before his breakthrough 1997 album “Devil Without a Cause.” That album went on to sell 14 million copies. It was also at Warped Tour where I first saw Boston’s own Bad Rabbits for the first time and was immediately hooked by their funky soul.

Friday, as I wandered around the steamy Mansfield grounds, I felt a bit sad that this festival that’s been so much fun for so many was over. But the 40-plus bands made sure to go out with a bang. Electro-popsters 3OH3!, horror rappers Twiztid, emo-punk bands Set It Off and Crown the Empire, and the aforementioned Falling in Reverse, gave fans many amazing final memories.

R.I.P., Warped. Thanks for all the good times."

André Staltz - The Web began dying in 2014, here's how
predictions, obsolete-discontinued-abandoned = "The Web may die like most other technologies do: simply by becoming less attractive than newer technologies. And like most obsolete technologies, they don’t suddenly disappear, neither do they disappear completely. You can still buy a Walkman and listen to a tape with it, but the technology has nevertheless lost its collective relevance. The Web’s death will come as a gradual decay of its necessity, not as a dramatic loss."

Dollar Shave Club and The Disruption of Everything – Stratechery by Ben Thompson
obsolete, etc = "the tech community is celebrating the massive return for Dollar Shave Club’s investors, but $1 billion for a 16% unit share of a market dominated by a brand that cost $57 billion is startlingly small. Indeed, that’s why buying Dollar Shave Club was never an option for P&G: even if their model is superior P&G’s shareholders would never permit the abandonment of what made the company so successful for so long; a company so intently focused on growing revenue is incapable of slicing one of their most profitable lines by half or more."

Learning from Twitter's Decline - ReadWrite
Dean Collins called this back in 2010-11 or so. He hated that Twitter kept screwing with the developers who were building around their ecosystem. Most people on the NY Tech list told him to deal with it, but now the chickens have come home to roost. ............... "An analysis of Twitter so far can provide something of a cautionary tales for those working in new media, wearables, IoT or any of the new technologies that are currently being developed. It demonstrates the importance of nurturing not only your product but also the ecosystem that surrounds it."

Microsoft Today Ends Support For Windows 8, Old Versions Of Internet Explorer | TechCrunch
Haha, I rememeber when I was doing tech work at Staple Sewing and I told Eddie to avoid Windows 8, at first he agreed. But then he talked to that half-cocked son of his and he said "Windows 8 is the future! I have to move to that!" ... And now here we are about 3 years later and the shit has been scrapped. Hahaha.

The Devaluation of Music: It’s Worse Than You Think — Cuepoint — Medium
#2: "...I mean music the sonic art form — imaginative, conceptual composition and improvisation rooted in harmonic and rhythmic ideas. In other words, music as it was defined and regarded four or five decades ago, when art music (incompletely but generally called “classical” and “jazz”) had a seat at the table." ................. capitalism-greed = All of these things are what happen when corporations suddenly "wake up" and realize that they can make more money by manipulating than by putting out honest, heartfelt, GOOD product... this goes for the musicians, for the writers (see #3 about the media picking stories based on name recognition), etc... me-stuff= "This is rarely remarked on, but I believe that thousands of cumulative impressions of background music assigned to “romance” and “grief” and “heroism” have laid down layers of scar tissue on our ability to feel something when tonal symphonic music is made or written in the 21st century." (Not just for music, but everything.)

Remember Your Old Graphing Calculator? It Still Costs a Fortune — Here's Why
In the story, there's a link to download TI-8x emulator for PC. However, I still think Steve's neighbors' Mathway.com website is faster/easier/freer and probably better in terms of user interface and displaying how the work got done. Also see the app called Desmos, which the story mentions. ................ strategy = TI got so deeply embedded in the textbook market that in an age where they should have been replaced by apps, they are still holding their marketshare, as well as their pricing from 20+years ago. ....................... status-quo-fights-back = Not really, but in a way, their relationships they forged long ago with Pearson and other book/testing companies probably is the (proactive) flip side of trying to fight/legislate competition out of existence. ........... obsolete-etc = This is something that should be obsolete, but because of massive focus, they never went out of style to begin with.

American religion experiencing slow exodus — but why?
"“The more your life is helpless,” he said, “the more you look for external assistance.”" ......... me-stuff-seeds-of-its-own-descruction = I've always had an innate sense that when something gets too popular, it ends up sewing the seeds of its own destruction. For example, dictatorships with absolute control end up creating militant resistance and that ends up bringing about their downfall. This is a new tag for examples when things like this happen. In this case, it's when religious conservatives decided to expand their reach by going into politics and "pushing an agenda" for the country. (I think this was in Billionaire's Tea Party, but not sure)

Nonsense bullshit jobs | David Graeber
The modern phenomenon of nonsense jobs. We should be living in trees, hanging out and enjoying each others' company. .............................. obsolete-discontinued-abandoned = Just as many jobs have been automated away, lots of other pointless jobs have been created. .......................... wealth-income-distrubution = Get to the last 3 paragraphs where it talks about jobs that are actually needed (teacher, car makers) and how Republicans have been able to marshall public opinion against them. Ironically (or perhaps because) those jobs actually have a purpose and the disappearance (or when they go on strike) of those jobs actually creates a lesser world. ........... The last paragraph says it all "If someone had designed a work regime perfectly suited to maintaining the power of finance capital, it's hard to see how they could have done a better job. Real, productive workers are relentlessly squeezed and exploited. The remainder are divided between a terrorised stratum of ....
