With 9 Short Words, Google Just Made a Stunning Announcement That Will Change Everything You Think About Google | Inc.com
"By the way, one of the many things Facebook did to combat the rise of Google+?

It bought a scrappy photo-sharing social network that had started at basically the exact same time as Google+, with just two coders who at first attracted total of $500,000 in investment, built their app in just eight weeks, and wound up millions of users overnight.

You might have heard of it. It's called Instagram."

The Long Story Behind Karelia's New Logo | Karelia Software
Developer's app is integrated into MacOSX, Steve Jobs tells the developer that's just the way it is, but the developer keeps on and learns that the quick, nimble nature of a small business can beat the Fortune 500.

"Because we are a small company, we are nimble — much more so than a Fortune 500 company or a bowl of petunias."

How Google Maps knows about traffic - Business Insider
In this case Waze is the "Goliath" I'm referring to because it was so much better than Google Maps/Navigation, but I know... Google's a Goliath, too. But my point is that an app that was that much better could be replaced by one that was sub-par simply by improving the latter over and over and over again. Never give up.

From 'Worst to First': As Z100 Turns 30, the New York Station Still Serves the Pop Universe - The Hollywood Reporter
Wow, I never knew Z100 (100.3FM) started from such humble beginnings. .... building-personas = Aside from the "hacks" that Scott Shannon put together (which were visionary and very much predicted the crazy things that would happen in social media 30+ years later), I find it interesting that at that time, no one had yet realized that you could put together a radio station that had multiple genres. People like Blondie, but they also like Michael Jackson, etc. But programmers were blinded by the fact that genres is how you section off radio stations. They didn't yet look at psychographics and realize that even though "energetic music" might not have existed as a genre, a large segment of the population was just looking for that -- not necessarily rock or disco or pop or whatever. .................. Projects that preserve the past for the public good aren’t really a big profit center. Old Google knew that, but didn’t seem to care. Google pulls plug on Glass, but the idea lives on | ZDNet
"Glass was a product plagued by problems right from the start, from the $1,500 price tag (despite the bill of materials for the parts being only a little over $150), the initial limited release, to the goofy look. However, the most controversial feature of Glass was the front-facing camera. It seems that there were no shortage of people who didn't like cameras being in their faces."

The fracking ban that comes into effect on Tuesday in the heart of Texas may never have happened at all, if industry had not insisted on fracking beside a local hospital, a children’s playground, and the 100-year-old farmhouse that was Cathy McMullen’
Although it's good that this ban is going into effect, it just goes to show that you can get away with a lot -- but when you start getting greedy (insisting on fracking beside a hospital and playground when there are millions of other places you could do it and not be noticed), you get your just rewards.

Google Starts Ranking ISPs Based on YouTube Performance | DSLReports, ISP Information
Great strategy employed by Netflix/Google. With the ISP's recent victory in the net neutrality battle, Netflix and Google have preemptively (before ISPs have used their newfound power) started grading them so the public can see what performance will be like before they decide on an ISP. Excellent strategy.

Why Legos Are So Expensive — And So Popular : Planet Money : NPR
It's always possible to win. You just have to be creative.

david-vs-goliath=

"The company tried to argue in court that no other company had the legal right to make stacking blocks that look like Legos.

"That didn't fly," Robertson says. "Every single country that Lego tried to make that argument in decided against Lego."

But Lego did find a successful way to do something Mega Bloks could not copy: It bought the exclusive rights to Star Wars. If you want to build a Death Star out of plastic blocks, Lego is now your only option.

The Star Wars blocks were wildly successful. So Lego kept going — it licensed Indiana Jones, Winnie the Pooh, Toy Story and Harry Potter.

Sales of these products have been huge for Lego. More important, the experience has taught the company that what kids wanted to do with the blocks was tell stories. Lego makes or licenses the stories they want to tell."

How underdogs can win : The New Yorker
I hate to give Mike H credit, but he always said "Don't play their game."
From the article:
"What happened, Arreguín-Toft wondered, when the underdogs likewise acknowledged their weakness and chose an unconventional strategy? He went back and re-analyzed his data. In those cases, David’s winning percentage went from 28.5 to 63.6. When underdogs choose not to play by Goliath’s rules, they win, Arreguín-Toft concluded, “even when everything we think we know about power says they shouldn’t.”"

SETT is now Live on Tynan.com - TYNAN
motivation-for-me-david-vs-goliath = I was thinking about how this new blogging style could end up taking over many popular blogs... and how Wordpress is going to respond by either including the features in the next release after they hear about it or how someone is going to create a plugin...

and it made me realize that even though we see things as the height of civilization, they all have an Achilles Heel. We just need to ANALYZE the situation, DISCOVER their weaknesses, BUILD a product that capitalizes on those failures and UNDERSTAND that it will take time to overtake the incumbent.

What's America's Most Engaging Social Network? You'll Be Surprised
motivation-for-me-david-vs-goliath =
"The secret to Tagged’s success? A pivot Tseng and co-founder Johann Schleier-Smith made around the beginning of 2008.

The longtime friends started Tagged in 2004, at the time angling it to be a Facebook-like social network for high schoolers. Eventually, however, Facebook expanded beyond a closed college network and allowed anyone over the age of 12 to join.

“We took a hard look and decided we weren’t going to win,” Tseng says. “But we had found out a lot of our users were actually using Tagged to meet new people, so that led us to pivot into a new space called ‘social discovery,’ where people use sites to make new social relationships.”"

New Nokia Chairman Sees No Need For Strategy Shift
