A simple, yet radical solution to solve Facebook's problems
Break it up and regulate it. Wow.

NOTE: I like this story a lot and since Yahoo is notorious for culling it's content, I don't want to be disappointed if this story disappears. Pinboard's archive function is flaky at best, so I archived it on archive.is (which is now pointing to archive.vn): http://archive.vn/pPUng

Mickey Mouse will be public domain soon—here’s what that means | Ars Technica
Wow...... I remember reading about this back in 1998. I thought copyright would be endlessly extended. Glad to hear this is not the case.

Now we need to turn back the dial and adjust copyright to last no more than 50 years

That's enough for someone who created a monumental work of art to live their life and die without having to work another day in their lives. The children and grandchildren can go find jobs. Or just invest the mountains of money.

The Man Who Spent $100K To Remove A Lie From Google : NPR
A turkish kid tries to pull a scam on a financial advisor in the US. The financial advisor catches on and reports him to the police. Turkish kid and his family are arrested and deported back to Turkey. Turkish kid sets up a website defaming the financial advisor. Google refuses to do anything about it even after a court order. Eventually, the guy has to spend $100,000 in overseas courts to have European privacy laws apply and the page is eventually taken down. Turkish kid is still an asshole.

Feds prohibit candidates from commenting on Trump, despite constitutional questions
"As the midterm congressional elections unfold, candidates are also running in 36 states for governor and competing for more than 6,000 state legislative seats. How many of these state candidates do you think will say something good or bad about President Trump? Probably more than you can count. When they do, they will break an obscure federal law."

Getting a consultation for estate planning tomorrow - what should I know in advance? What should I be looking to do? : EstatePlanning
"-I would look for an attorney who is board-certified in EP and/or has years of experience in this area of the law (if your state even offers board certification).

-Make sure attorney explains the difference between probate and non-probate assets, and also explains your options for possibly avoiding probate.

-Similarly, how to tie in your insurance and retirement accounts with your overall EP plan.

-Whether or not what you are doing is driven by federal/state estate taxes.

-Since you have minor children, options for leaving their money in trust for them. My preference is for lifetime trusts but to allow them to become their own trustee at a certain age. Biggest question, who is to be trustee of these trusts if you and your wife both go down until kids reach that age.

-Options and pros/cons of creating trusts at first spouse's death.

-Diff between irrevocable and revocable/living trusts (ties in to probate avoidance).

-What Powers of Attorney he/she recommends and how these are used.

Biggest question - does he/she listen to what you want, the specifics of your situation, or does he/she try to push you to their one-size-fits-all plan."

Diana Young - WTF Not labeling the source of meat is not going...
What the hell is the point of ending country of origin labeling? It could only be moneyed interests buying this vote. Yet another reason to buy from a local farmshare... meat as well as vegetables. .............. home-stuff = Buy a freezer big enough to keep frozen meat from the farmshare. Figure out how to store vegetables for the long term. This might mean having a cool, dark basement area.

What to Say When the Police Tell You to Stop Filming Them : TrueReddit
Summary: Stay completely out of the officers' way, calmly respond "I’m just exercising my constitutionally protected right to document police activity," and if asked to back up do so slightly. Note: This article is for public spaces in the USA. In some countries you do not have an automatic legal right to record police.

Russell Brand: Philip Seymour Hoffman is another victim of extremely stupid drug laws | Comment is free | The Guardian
"Countries like Portugal and Switzerland that have introduced progressive and tolerant drug laws have seen crime plummet and drug-related deaths significantly reduced. We know this. We know this system doesn't work – and yet we prop it up with ignorance and indifference. Why? Wisdom is acting on knowledge. Now we are aware that our drug laws aren't working and that alternatives are yielding positive results, why are we not acting? Tradition? Prejudice? Extreme stupidity? The answer is all three. Change is hard, apathy is easy, tradition is the narcotic of our rulers. The people who are most severely affected by drug prohibition are dispensable, politically irrelevant people. Poor people. Addiction affects all of us but the poorest pay the biggest price."

Does the Art Market Need to Be Regulated?
I remember hearing something like this on an NPR show, Talk of the Nation or something? They said of the 3 big unregulated markets in the world, only art is legal - human trafficking and drugs being the other two. ................. "I heard a former editor of Art in America say that the four big unregulated markets are art, arms, drugs, and human trafficking. Art is legal, of course, and ideal for money laundering by those engaged in the other three markets. The dark side of the art market bubble, you might say. He also told me that the Chinese have really exploited the arbitrariness of pricing art. I would like to know more about this. "

FTC Cracking Down on Search Engines
Glad they are finally noticing - or taking action on - this, as I've been saying for a while that Google's background shading makes paid ads indistinguishable from organic search results.

PERMANENT! So HE OWNS HER FOREVER!"
