[Article] Paleo and Red Meat Can Reverse Leaky Gut : Paleo
"The paleo diet can do a great job reversing leaky gut.

Leaky gut used to be a fringe medical condition. Most mainstream doctors didn’t recognize it as a real disease. But now we're started to realize it's implicated in a whole host of diseases. Everything from cancer to autoimmune disorders.

Unfortunately, the beloved veggies are actually a BIG reason why people have leaky gut. But the main culprit is our SAD SAD diet. (I'm referring to the standard american diet of course).

If you have incessant chronic issues, this could be why....

What is Leaky Gut? (It's not just two gross words together)

🥩The small intestine is ~50% of your gut. It is responsible for 90% of food absorption and has the largest mass of immune cells in your entire body [*].

🥩The only barrier protecting what you eat from your bloodstream is just a single layer of mucous, linked together by proteins [*]

🥩When this barrier is broken, it results in leaky gut. The lining of your gut is not HOLDING THE DOOOOORRR.

🥩Toxins like gluten and chemicals like arsenic or BPA to pass into your bloodstream. Rightfully so, your body freaks out.

🥩Your immune system is mobilized to expel the toxins, which creates inflammation throughout your body (not just in the gut).

Symptoms of Leaky Gut / Long Term Consequences

🥩33% of autoimmune disorders are already linked to leaky gut. Type 1 diabetes, for example, is an autoimmune disorder where your immune system attacks your pancreas. [*]

🥩Cancer: The team at Paleomedicina showed that leaky gut may be accompanied by permeability in other membranes too, like the arteries and blood brain barrier [*]

🥩Food sensitivities (this is both a cause and an effect)

🥩Skin issues like acne and eczema

🥩Gut issues like IBS

🥩Alzheimers: When intestinal permeability increases, toxins pass through the bloodstream and to the brain through the vagus nerve. This triggers inflammation, which can cause a breakdown in cognitive function [*]

🥩Anxiety and Depression (also through vagus nerve and BBB permeability)

What Causes Leaky Gut? Two main things:

🥩Inflammation: Diet or stress related

🥩Certain foods directly degrade the gut lining: alcohol, gluten, saponins, nightshades and lectin are all examples

Why Paleo / Carnivore Diet Cures It

🥩It cuts out the main dietary triggers: FODMAPs, Gluten, Poisonous veggies, sugar, alcohol, etc.

🥩It can actually heal the gut

🥩Meat and ketone production reduces inflammation. Very few people are intolerant to meat

🥩Protein protects the intestinal barrier: Among the many amino acids, glutamine and tryptophan have been reported to maintain, promote, and protect intestinal barrier function. Glutamine, one of the nonessential amino acids, is a major energy source for intestinal epithelial cell [*]

🥩Omega 3's help to heal the gut: Omega-3s reverse gut imbalances — dysbiosis — and increase the production of anti inflammatory compounds.

🥩Vitamins D and A improve the cohesion of the intestinal wall: Vitamin D helps improve the strength of the protein junctions between intestinal cells [*]. Vitamin A has also been shown to increase the intestinal defense layer [*]. Eat beef liver!

[Article] How to Heal Leaky Gut Syndrome: Everything You Need to Know About This Digestive Condition : Paleo
"Medications like antibiotics and Accutane (as someone who suffered with acne) can lead to Leaky Gut. I've been eating Paleo for 2 years but my acne was still showing up and giving me trouble.

Went to GP recently and was prescribed Topzole 40mg for just two weeks to heal my gut. Acne gone. Digestion improved. Still continuing with Paleo diet (my way of buying food, cooking and eating has been become so ingrained with the lifestyle) but now I can relax a bit in social occasions (like a piece of cheese, bread or a cookie) without my skin flaring up with stomach pain."

This Is Why Stairs Can Leave You Out of Breath | Psychology Today

Why Cannabinoids Appear to Cure so many Illnesses

Woman battles cancer with diet; Harvard researchers to study her - Tri-State News, Weather & Sports
"DELAFIELD, WI (WISN/CNN) – A woman said her emphasis on diet helped her in her battle against cancer, and now her approach will be studied by researchers at Harvard University to see if it can help others.

For Kathy Bero, time in the kitchen is an investment in good health.

"It isn’t really about eating healthy," Bero said. "It's about eating specific foods that fight disease."

She ought to know. In 2005, doctors diagnosed Bero with inflammatory breast cancer. Her prognosis for survival was 21 months.

At the time, Bero was 41 years old and the mother of two young girls. She fought the disease with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. But the cancer fought back.

"Eleven months after my first diagnosis, I was diagnosed with a high-grade tumor in my head and neck," Bero said.

The medication took its toll.

"My kidneys were failing; my liver was failing," Bero said. "My lungs were damaged. My heart was damaged. I told my oncologist that I'm done with that protocol because one way or another, I'm going to die. And I don't want to go that way."

It was then she decided to go off chemotherapy and use a strategy suggested by a friend.

"My friend kept saying you have to learn about anti-angiogenic foods," Bero said.

Anti-angiogenic foods essentially block the creation of blood vessels so cancer can’t easily spread. Examples include organic vegetables such as purple potatoes, carrots and leeks.

"Leeks are at the top of the cancer-fighting list," Bero said.

Also on her list: berries, walnuts, green tea and herbs, especially garlic.

"When a recipe calls for two cloves, I’m probably going to put in six because garlic is a really strong cancer fighter," Bero said.

Bero said her diet - combined with a type of alternative medicine called Reiki, along with meditation and visualization - worked.

"My doctors just kept saying, 'Huh. That is interesting,'" she said.

Today, more than 12 years after her first diagnosis, Bero, who is 54, said she's cancer-free and now works as a cancer coach.

"She's teaching me food is the best form of medicine," said Phil Baugh, one of Bero's clients. Baugh, a 43-year-old father of three, is fighting brain cancer.

"It's stopped growing now, so it's wonderful," Baugh said. "And a huge part of that is food."

Researchers at Harvard University learned of Bero's success and will study her method.

"It's exciting," Bero said. "I'm now validated. I'm no longer the 'crazy cancer patient.' There's a real science that is going to be there."

Bero said Harvard researchers will study people who've had exceptional outcomes.

"They're looking at our genetics and the genetics of the tumor," Bero said. "What the outliers did; their attitude, environment, faith, social support. What they're trying to do is create a database of all these different things and look for the commonalities between these people."

The lead Harvard researcher, Dr. Isaac Kohane, said that because these outcomes are so rare, this particular study will take some time to complete."

A newly discovered network of fluid-filled channels in the human body may be a previously-unknown organ, and it seems to help transport cancer cells around the body. : science
Not exactly "medicine-science-catches-up-to-folk-wisdom ", as there is nothing folk wisdom said about these channels, but it is interesting that this was never known about the body. The closest possible thing I could think would equate would be chi force from Chinese medicine or chakras from Hindu spiritualism, but I don't think it's the same thing.

T.R.I.M. at CMC: 10-Steps to A Healthier Body
*** *** *** *** *** ***
UPDATE:
Just realized this was reposted (and updated a bit) on DrCate.com as "Deep Nutrition Made Simple" (link below), which I already bookmarked previously. Still, saving this for posterity.

http://drcate.com/deep-nutrition-mae-simple/
*** *** *** *** *** ***

This is an archived version from The Internet Archive. Copy/pasting the article in case this goes down:

"The problem isn’t you! And it has nothing to do with willpower. The problem is INFLAMMATION—a chronic state of metabolic imbalance that stands between you and the body, and health, you deserve! At T.R.I.M. (T.R.I.M. = Treatment to Reverse Inflammatory Metabolism) we remove the toxins from your diet and create an individualized nutritional program based on REAL FOOD.

10-Steps to A Healthier Body

1) Cut your carbs. Atkins was right: Not all calories are equal. You get a real boost to your metabolism by keeping your total carb intake below 50-100 gm (not counting insoluble fiber) per day. Once you’ve got the weight off, you can increase your carb count to 100-150. But if you have ever been overweight, eating more than 100-150 gm of carbs per day (depending on your size) will put the weight back on again, slowly but surely. So your best bet it to learn low carb and make it a new way of life. (More info and FAQs HERE)

2) Avoid trans fats. Another metabolism-drag comes from trans fats, which damage fat processing enzymes to make you gain weight around your intestines. The lable can claim 0 gms of trans fat even when there is “secret trans” fat due to a loophole that only requires trans fat content be listed if there are more than .5 grams of trans fat per serving (as small as 1t) plus emulsifiers (‘glycerides’). To avoid trans fats, you must read the ingredients for all foods you buy (salad dressing, cereal, crackers, sauces, spreads) and avoid all of these “secret trans”-containing oils:
Canola
Soy
Corn
Cottonseed
Sunflower

3) Do not buy low fat, low cholesterol, or fat free food alternatives such as egg-beaters, low-cholesterol spreads, skim milk, and low-fat ice creams.

4) Eat butter, eggs, cheese, and whole-milk. Studies show eating these foods improves HDL (good) cholesterol, bone health, brain health, and energy levels.

5) Eat vegetables with fat, salt, and an acid. This combination optimizes your body’s ability to absorb the antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals in greens.

6) Eat more vegetables that fruits. Fruits are better for you than candy for a treat, but they are a treat and you should eat 2- 3 servings of vegetables before you treat yourself to more fruit.

7) Learn to make bone broth. In order to exercise, you need to keep your joints in good shape. The number one miracle food for your joints and connective tissue (including bone) is bone broth because it contains compounds that act like growth hormones in these tissues.

8) Eat probiotic-rich foods. If your digestive system is crampy, gassy, bloaty, or otherwise making you not want to eat, when you do feel better you’ll be very tempted to treat yourself to something overly starchy or sweet. To keep your digestive system working smoothly, include probiotic-rich foods in your diet on a regular basis. The most popular probiotic-rich food in the US is yoghurt, and real pickles and sauerkraut are also great sources of digestive-boosting organisms.

9) Sleep. Your body will be exposed to excessive cortisol and pro-inflammatory hormones if you do not get enough sleep, and most people will do better with 8 hours than with the more-common 6-7 we sometimes have to deal with.

10) Exercise! Cross train by doing as many different types of activities as you can: Walk, Dance, Ski, Bike, Shovel your neighbor’s walk. It’s very difficult to keep weight off if you don’t exercise, so build it in to your schedule today, and start building a better body, better health, and a better you!"

Alex Mitchell on Twitter: "@drcateshanahan I thought you'd get a kick out of this… "
This is the kind of marketing I hate. A company shouts from the hilltops "We have more X and more Y than competitor Z" - and if you're an uneducated consumer, you'll be like "Wow, and it's cheaper, too!" - when in reality "X and Y" are toxic and unhealthy, but because they're putting it on their packaging, it appears to be a benefit, not a drawback of said product.

12 Health Myths We Need to Stop Believing
Every one of these has a nugget of truth, but is so far off the mark as to be dangerous. Slide by slide critiques:

1) Not sure about this one, but Vitamin C megadoses aren't for curing colds, they're for something else that I think I read in either Deep Nutrition or heard on Dr. Gary Null (which could be quakery, considering he's a hardcore vegan)

2) They told the truth, but not the whole truth. They fail to mention that vegetables oils are toxic.

3) "Wiht few exceptions, dietary supplements are generally unnecessary." - true, but it's better to take them than not if you are eating a shit diet. Also, Vitamin D megadoses are absolutely necessary.

4) fine

5) fine

6) "you can't detox" and "you don't need an expensive green juice to do it" - actually you do. You should be blending your vegetables and eating them raw as much as possible. Fiber helps neutralize free radicals from vegetable oil and other sources.

7) "exercise is great for your body and your health, but evidence is mounting that it has little to nothing to do with your ability to lose significant weight and keep it off." - yes, but if you are only worried about weight, you are looking at the wrong thing. Exercise, even if you stay fat, is something you MUST do on a daily basis.

8 - 11) fine

12) there's actually a study out of Norway (I think) that disputes this. It's not a firm yes, but I would still recommend using phones on speaker and not sleeping with them by your head

13) fine

Study: There May Be a Link Between Processed Food and Cancer | Time
What's funny is that I thought I understood food before this, but after reading Dr. Catherine Shanahan's "Deep Nutrition" (not even done with it yet, but after becoming educated in the science), I look at an article like this with a skeptical eye.

I do believe that processed foods cause disease - but they're throwing around terms like "saturated fat" as if that's the problem, when they totally miss PUFA / vegetable oil angle.

I admittedly read quickly over the sections that discussed the chemistry of vegetable oil and why PUFA are so easily mutated, but just knowing that the science exists is huge.

In short, this article is good confirmation bias - and I do believe it, but it's a bit sloppy once you know that PUFAs and sugar are the big culprits. (although this article does state "The poor nutritional quality of ultra-processed foods likely contributes to their negative effects on health.", which couldn't be more true.

How too much fructose may cause liver damage - Diet and health
"FRUCTOSE is the sweetest of the natural sugars. As its name suggests, it is found mainly in fruits. Its job seems to be to appeal to the sweet tooths of the vertebrates these fruit have evolved to be eaten by, the better to scatter their seeds far and wide. Fructose is also, however, often added by manufacturers of food and drink, to sweeten their products and make them appeal to one species of vertebrate in particular, namely Homo sapiens. And that may be a problem, because too much fructose in the diet seems to be associated with liver disease and type 2 diabetes."

Note to self. Also see this article (https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/sugar-explained), which explains:
- two main monosaccharides: (fruit sugar) & glucose (what food gets turned into?)
- two main disaccharides: sucrose (white sugar) and lactose

For a Better Marriage, Act Like a Single Person - The New York Times
Some great snippets FTA:
"Contrary to some claims, marrying at an older age generally lowers the risk of divorce. It also gives people time to acquire educational and financial assets, as well as develop a broad range of skills — from cooking to household repairs to financial management — that will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives, including when a partner is unavailable."

"What’s more, single people generally have wider social networks than married couples, who tend to withdraw into their coupledom. On average, unmarried people interact more frequently with friends, neighbors, co-workers and extended family."

"What’s more, single people generally have wider social networks than married couples, who tend to withdraw into their coupledom. On average, unmarried people interact more frequently with friends, neighbors, co-workers and extended family."

"Socializing with friends and family and participating in clubs, political organizations, teams, unions and churches are essential components of what sociologists call social integration. And health researchers report that maintaining high levels of social integration provides as much protection against early mortality as quitting smoking. In fact, having weak social networks is a greater risk factor for dying early than being obese or sedentary."

"A long-term study of more than 6,500 Britons found that men and women who reported having 10 or more friendships at age 45 had significantly higher levels of psychological well-being at age 50, whatever their partnership status, than people with fewer friends. And two recent studies of nearly 280,000 people in almost 100 countries by William Chopik of Michigan State University found that friendships become increasingly vital to well-being at older ages. Among older adults, relationships with friends are a better predictor of good health and happiness than relations with family."

"It’s true that, on average, married people report higher well-being than singles. But mounting research indicates that most of the disadvantages of singles compared with the currently married are accounted for by distress among the previously married, especially those most recently divorced or widowed.

This suggests an intriguing possibility, says the Ohio State University sociologist Kristi Williams, editor of The Journal of Marriage and Family: Many of the problems experienced by divorced and widowed people may result not so much from the end of their marriage as from having relied too much on their spouse and thus failing to maintain social networks and the skills of self-reliance."

There is a lot more, but I'd basically be pasting the whole article.

Lift Weights, Eat More Protein, Especially if You’re Over 40 - The New York Times
"The researchers also looked for the sweet spot for protein intake, which turned out to be about 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. In practical terms, that would amount to about 130 grams of protein a day for a 175-pound man. (A chicken breast has about 45 grams of protein.)"

"That advice holds especially true for middle-aged and older weight trainers, he says, almost none of whom were getting the ideal amount of protein in these studies and who, presumably in consequence, tended to show much smaller gains in strength and muscle size than younger people."

House-cleaning, walking to work, staves off death: study
"One in 12 global deaths over a five-year period can be prevented through 30 minutes of physical activity -- which can include house-cleaning or walking to work -- five days a week, researchers said Friday.

"Being highly active (750 minutes a week) is associated with an even greater reduction," according to a study published in The Lancet medical journal.

The study, which tracked 130,000 people in 17 countries, "confirms on a global scale that physical activity is associated with a lower risk of mortality and cardiovascular disease," the authors said in a press statement."

You Don't Have to Splurge on Fancy 'Activated' Nuts to Get a Healthy Snack | TakePart
I think this is why grains and legumes are not included in Paleo:
"many vegans, raw foodists, and other proponents (many of whom suffer from digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome) believe that activation makes nuts and seeds more easily digestible and nutritious by reducing the effects of their phytic acid (aka phytates), the primary form of phosphorus storage in many plants, including grains, legumes, oil seeds, and nuts. Phytic acid binds to minerals such as iron, zinc, and to a lesser degree, calcium and impairs absorption in the body."

health, disease-prevention = "“A series of large studies, including the Nurses’ Health Study of 76,464 women and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study of 42,498 men, found that the more nuts people consumed, the less likely they were to die at any given age, especially of cancer or heart disease,”" --- Be sure to read the rest of that paragraph and the following one where it says that the study might be flawed, but then goes on to say that new studies might prove the health powers of nuts anyway.

What are some mind-blowing facts about food? - Quora
I found it amazing that it's been known since the 80's that organic food is more carcinogenic (or rather, has more carcinogenic substances in it), the theory being that since organic food has to protect itself from pests, it creates these carcinogenic substances to kill/deter them. Those substances remain after the plant is picked and eaten, meaning they end up entering our bodies. Plants that are raised conventionally don't have to fight off pests, so the pesticide remains on the outside of the plant, which, presumably is removed if you wash it well enough.
