10 cheat codes for designing User Interfaces – Design + Sketch – Medium
marketing-tactics--writing-copy = Part of writing is not just the words, but the way those words stand out on a page. This is a great basic primer for that.

The Problem With Cul-de-Sac Design - CityLab
"In their California study, Garrick and Marshall eventually realized the safest cities had an element in common: They were all incorporated before 1930. Something about the way they were designed made them safer. ... These cities were built the old way: along those monotonous grids. In general, they didn’t have fewer accidents overall, but they had far fewer deadly ones. Marshall and Garrick figured that cars (and cars with bikes) must be colliding at lower speeds on these types of street networks."

Jeremiah Owyang - This will go down in the halls of bad design as...
What the fuck were they thinking designing this stupid fucking card like this? It's exactly the way untrained, unthinking mutants communicate. Which is why the world is the mess that it is. (and people like me are in high demand)

How Apple Is Giving Design A Bad Name
Apple has abandoned the fundamental principles of good design: discoverability, feedback, recovery, etc ....................... "Apple is destroying design. Worse, it is revitalizing the old belief that design is only about making things look pretty. No, not so! Design is a way of thinking, of determining people’s true, underlying needs, and then delivering products and services that help them. Design combines an understanding of people, technology, society, and business. The production of beautiful objects is only one small component of modern design: Designers today work on such problems as the design of cities, of transportation systems, of health care. Apple is reinforcing the old, discredited idea that the designer’s sole job is to make things beautiful, even at the expense of providing the right functions, aiding understandability, and ensuring ease of use."

Guy Kawasaki - This is a 2,000 word masterclass on typography,...
This bit of copy that Guy Kawasaki wrote in his post about the article is what convinced me to click: "This is a 2,000 word masterclass on typography, guaranteed to improve your design ability." ................... Just goes to show the power of copy writing. I never would have clicked if it had said "Learn Typography In Seconds!" or "Typography for Beginners!" --- this reiterates the point that different people have to hear things in different ways for it to click. Hence, you can reuse the same article multiple times with different introduction or caption text to draw in different readers.

There's always another side of the story - Imgur
Awesome ad on the corner of a building. If you read it from one side, not realizing it doesn't wrap around the corner, it delivers one message. But if you it from the corner where you can see both sides, it gives you the full story. Even the tagline at the bottom "There's Another Side" is up against the edge so it could lead you to realize there's the rest of the story on the other side. Brilliant.

How to Marry Text and Images – Design School | Canva
Canva is set of free online graphic design tools. ........... This tutorial is an excellent example of good content. As a matter of fact, it's just like I told Lori a long time ago: study a bunch of inspirational pictures that you like, write down the "thing" that they did in that picture and then you can use this as a template for creating your own images/text down the line. For a non-designer, it takes the "Eureka!" inspiration or magic moment out of the design process. It will never win a design award for originality, but it will certainly get views as well as getting your point across.

First Look: The FDA's Nutrition Label Gets A Makeover : The Salt : NPR
Food labels get a makeover. From Ancestral Health Symposium on Facebook 2/27/2014: "Big News! FDA changes Nutrition Labels: while "total calories" still features prominently, less emphasis is placed on "calories from fat" because "research shows the type of fat is more important than the amount." More emphasis is now on "added sugars," and increased labeling of potassium and vitamin D. Are ancestral insights finally being heard?"

Watch: A Superb Introduction To The Wide World Of Infographics | Co.Design: business + innovation + design
Most people who know Co.Design know us, at least in part, for running a lot of infographics (or data visualizations, if you prefer that term). A lot of the time, we find that people are amazed by the images, but they don’t really understand why--what makes these pictures so entrancing, and are they actually important beyond serving as mere eye candy? This clip is from a recent episode of PBS Off Book, and it’s an excellent primer to the world of data viz, with more than one face you’ll recognize from being featured on Co.D.

Showcase Of Beautiful Black And White Websites
computech-project = Might be awesome to make the website completely black and white, the theme being "no frills, just great service" or something like that -- also, when we do use color (to attract attention to a particular product or something) it will really, really stand out. Might have to rethink (or tweak) this idea in light of the fact that we plan to use video / pictures on the site.

100 Years Of Propaganda: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - Smashing Magazine
Orpen studied at the Slade School in London alongside the likes of Augustus John and Wyndham Lewis. He produced some of his best work while at the school and became known for his portraits. A friend of Orpen then arranged for him to paint the pictures of senior military officials, such as Lord Derby and Churchill. In 1917, he was recruited by the government’s head of War Propaganda to the Western front to paint images of war-torn France. It was there that Orpen painted his most famous piece, “Dead Germans in a Trench.”
