Seth's Blog: Measure what you care about (re: the big sign over your desk)
february 2015 by daguti
I've seen this happen. One particularly poignant time was when my car was broken into in Newark. When I brought the car to the police station (after they didn't show up for hours), they were joking right in front of me "That's a theft from vehicle, not a buglary!" I didn't understand it at the time, but theft from vehicle is evidently a term for when you leave the window open and someone reaches in and steals something, while burglary is for when someone smashes your window and steals things. Seems like a minor quibble, but by gaming the numbers, officers can claim to be doing a good job at keeping "harder" crime down.

The Best Length for Every Online Content
april 2014 by daguti
Covers ideal lengths for Twitter, Facebook, Google+, email subject lines, blog titles, etc, etc, etc.... ================== Of particular interest: "You may have noticed many sites online that have a different font for their lead paragraph than they do for the remainder of their text. Would you believe there is psychology at play here?" ... lesson: Make the first paragraph bigger and bolder than the rest of the article, so that it appears simpler to read.

may 2012 by daguti
Between this and the recent "cellphone"-tagged items, we're in the middle of a shift of viewing internet access from a flat-rate, unlimited resource to more of something like a gas or electric utility, which gets paid for based on usage.

ideas are just a multiplier of execution - O'Reilly ONLamp Blog
may 2011 by daguti
This ties in perfectly with my philosophy that certain businesses have inherent limits built in. In other words, Jazzville will NEVER be a Facebook. No matter how much time, effort, money or brainpower we put into it. It just won't.
Forget the fact that it's aimed at a NJ-centric jazz crowd. Even if it were JazzvilleUSA, the idea itself is not a "pillar of the digital economy"
Conversely, let's just say that I *did* hit upon the next great "digital pillar" of the next century. Poorly executed, it will fail... or at the least it won't thrive to full potential.

Seth's Blog: Why are you afraid of process?
march 2008 by daguti
a process that measures and tests and improves and repeats and changes elements hourly / a process that's all about what works. it might very well turn your metrics from negative to positive. It might reinvent all the dynamics of your business.
