Using interrupts with Python on the Raspberry Pi and RPi.GPIO
How to use interrupts with Python on the Raspberry Pi and RPi.GPIO @ RasPi.TV. We’ve been learning about interrupts this week because of the brand new interrupt capabilities of RPi.GPIO. We covered a simple “wait for” interrupt in part 1, threaded callback interrupt and button debouncing in part 2 and today we’re getting sophisticated with multiple threaded callbacks. “WoooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooo”, I hear you say. ;)

Building Portable Linux Devices: Never Been Easier, But Still Hard | Hackaday
Thanks to spin-offs from technology developed for set-top boxes and mobile phones we can now buy any one of a pile of different boards that have almost equivalent power to a desktop computer. Repurpose Optical Drive With RPi
This project came about after my beloved laptop's optical drive started to misbehave. Removing the tray meant I had a large hole in the side of my computer so I needed to fill it with something. I had seen that you could buy bays that you can slot a second hard drive into for your laptop. I didn't really have the need for that so instead, I went about designing and 3D printing a replacement blank part with the same dimensions as the original dive, with a space that I could fit passport sized notebook that I kept all my project ideas in.

The Linux Throwie: Powering a Linux Server with a 300mW Solar Panel | Hackaday
Have you ever had one of those moments, when you’re rummaging through your spare parts heap, and have a rather bizarre project idea that you can’t quite get out of your head? You know, the ones that have no clear use, but simply demand to be born, of glass and steel and silicon?

This time, the stubborn idea in question was sort of like a solar-rechargeable LED throwie, but instead of a blinking light, it has a fully cloud-accessible embedded Linux server in the form of a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+.

TensorFlow Pi port is latest salvo in battle for edge analytics
The recent port of TensorFlow to the Raspberry Pi is the latest in a series of chess moves from Google and its chief AI rival Nvidia to win the hearts and keyboards of embedded Linux developers. Integrating TensorFlow models into an embedded project offers further challenges. Yet, as Google has shown with its AIY Projects kits for the Raspberry Pi, you can add a bit of ML smarts in Raspberry Pi based robots, vision systems, and other embedded gear without fighting a huge learning curve.

The TensorFlow port should be particularly welcome in the Raspberry Pi educational community. As the RPi Foundation’s Eben Upton wrote in a congratulatory tweet about the “massive news,” the TensorFlow port will enable “cool machine-learning educational content.”

I decided to build some sort of smart wall calendar, which will display our reminders, events and some other data. Since I have various old electronic parts lying around, my goal was to reuse them as many as possible and build the calendar with as little costs as possible.

It will also display time, date, weather, temperature and some additional information. It will be powered by a Raspberry Pi computer with a Passive Infrared Sensor (PIR) motion sensor attached to it, so that the display turns on, when motion is detected in the room, but turns off after few minutes of inactivity.

A DCF77, WWVB, JJY and MSF clock LF-band signal transmitter using the Raspberry Pi
I am living in a country where there is no DCF77 sender nearby for my European radio controlled wristwatch to get its time. So I built my own 'transmitter', taking the NTP time of a Raspberry Pi and generating a modulated radio signal via GPIO pins. Since many other long-wave time stations around the world use similar concepts of sending amplitude modulated time, other time services have been added. This program is useful if you have a clock that otherwise does not get any reception.

Expression Flower challenges the perception of what robotics can be while exploring the possibility for a whimsical experience that is engaging, natural, and fun. Smile at the flower, and it will smile with you. Wink at the flower, and it will get shy.

The brain of the Expression Flower is Android Things, an operating system from Google, designed for embedded devices and the Internet of Things. When the flower identifies a face, ML Kit running on Android Things infers expressions. Once the type of expression is determined, the flower responds with movement and color. This means when you smile, the flower smiles back at you.

The Raspberry Pi is a fantastically powerful, small and cute computer. Ideal for portable, battery powered applications. But it’s not designed for battery power! For example, the Raspberry Pi Model 3B does not have a direct battery input and consumes around 500mA of current during normal operation. Put another way, if you provide it with a regulator to use batteries, typical AA battery packs will only give you a couple of hours use (see the Raspberry Pi Battery Life Calculator). The sleepy Pi has a prototyping area and set of expansion headers so that you can easily plug in extra circuitry, like the forthcoming range of “blankets”

Raspberry Pi Wearable Time Lapse Camera @ Adafruit Learning System
The Lumenati line of LED boards is designed to give your projects an edge in their lighting capacity. Based on the APA102C addressable LED, these LEDs employ a 2-wire communication protocol consisting of a clock line and a data line. While this requires one more wire than standard WS2812B addressable LEDs, the advantage is that the communication with the LEDs becomes somewhat timing independent, allowing you to run these directly off of a Raspberry Pi or other single-board computer that doesn’t normally allow for a long, precicely-timed data stream without the use of additional hardware.

5 Awesome DIY Lego Raspberry Pi Cases
Many options are available for DIY builds, from using the approved cardboard punnet to repurposing old hardware such as games cartridges. You might even 3D print a case, or simply bolt two pieces of wood around your Raspberry Pi.

But there’s another option: Lego. The world’s foremost construction toy makes an excellent case for the Raspberry Pi, as these five examples demonstrate.

Control Your Raspberry Pi From Anywhere Using aREST
It can sometimes be intimidating to configure your Raspberry Pi and then connect it to an Internet of Things platform. This is one of the main reason why I created aREST, which is now also compatible with the Raspberry Pi. In this project, we are going to see how to use the aREST framework on the Raspberry Pi, so you can easily control your board from anywhere in the world.
