As the door opened, all three of them stopped short in their individual activities- Enjolras’ fingers freezing an inch above his keyboard, Combeferre looking up from his book, and Courfeyrac sitting up straighter

A boy stood in the doorway, frozen under their stares. He had an artful mess of inky curls about his face, and was looking up at them with sharp, dark eyes. His lips parted in something caught between shock and fear, probably at being suddenly pinned under such scrutiny.

After a few seconds of uncomfortable silence, the boy opened his mouth as if to say something, but soon thought the better of it. He turned around quickly, and walked out again, shutting the door behind him.

So, what is SVA? SVA is the School of Visual Arts. It was founded in 1947 as a school for cartoonists/comic artists and illustrations. In the 1950s it was renamed to the School of Visual Arts and expanded to include fine arts, photography, etc. It's located in the Gramercy Park/Chelsea area in Manhattan, New York. It is not an enclosed college campus!! It a bunch of separate buildings between West 21st and 5 Ave, over to E22nd and 2nd Ave. The main building is on 23rd and 3rd ave.

Guide: Life for American High School/College Students
lifehappenedtome asked: Hello and thanks for your reply to my last question and your blog in general! I’ve been doing research for hours on the American educational system but most of it is so general and tells me nothing about a student’s everyday life (high school + college / uni). I don’t want to rely on what I know from literature and television, so is there any simple ‘guide’ or something?

Resource: How to Write a Character Who Is A College Professor
This one is a bit of a cheat. Since I’m working on my applications for grad school with the hope of one day (God willing) becoming a professor, this research was pretty mandatory for me anyway. With that said, college professors are popular character types; everyone loves the protagonist who writes (because it’s like they’re really narrating the story, right?), and I’ve seen the professor hero (or villain, or neither, or both) floating around here quite a lot. Here are some links that have helped me and should help in character development!

Resource: Writing High School

So you want to write a story about high schoolers, but you’ve either graduated and don’t remember what it’s like, or you’re just not sure where to start in writing your story. No problem. The lives of high schoolers change each year, so even if you have just graduated, it’s a good idea to do your research. Here are some resources I hope will help you to write a relevant and accurate high school story:

What are some ways to avoid the whole "girl moves to new town and meets the love of her life"-cliché? I'm having trouble finding other ways to introduce my character to her love interest without using that cliché

Designing Realistic Magic Academies - Dan Koboldt
When I reread JK Rowling’s Harry Potter books these days, I have different questions than I did the first time around. Questions like: who are the great legendary heroes of British wizarding society that every kid learns about? What options does a talented student like Hermione Granger have for post-secondary education?

Anyone who’s read or watched the Harry Potter saga knows quite a bit about Hogwarts. But even after reading all seven books, I’m still pretty confused about the education of 20th-century British wizards. And if you’re planning to create a school of magic for your fantasy world, there are some things you should think about to keep your readers from having this same confusion. Most importantly, you need to figure out the function of your school within its society. Ask yourself this question: who is your school’s target audience?
