“I was wrong, okay?” He was muffled by the couch cushions, and for a second Grantaire thought he heard wrong because holy shit, did Enjolras just admit that? “You were right, and I didn’t see it at first but now I do, so thank you for that. I’ve seen the fucking light, Grantaire’s a genius, and now you’ve gotten what you came for and can leave me alone.”

Grantaire has never exactly been gentle with Enjolras’ feelings, and it might be time to rethink that approach. Or, in which Enjolras is secretly insecure, Grantaire is not very perceptive, and Combeferre is, of course, always right.

“I’ve asked you all here today to discuss something of the utmost importance,” he begins, and Grantaire sinks further down in his seat. It’s stuff he’s heard Enjolras talk about before—he’s not exactly the quiet type—equal rights for magical creatures: the leprechauns, goblins, banshees, vampires, Veelas, everyone, even the—

“—werewolves,” Enjolras concludes, and Grantaire very carefully does not flinch.

As the door opened, all three of them stopped short in their individual activities- Enjolras’ fingers freezing an inch above his keyboard, Combeferre looking up from his book, and Courfeyrac sitting up straighter

A boy stood in the doorway, frozen under their stares. He had an artful mess of inky curls about his face, and was looking up at them with sharp, dark eyes. His lips parted in something caught between shock and fear, probably at being suddenly pinned under such scrutiny.

After a few seconds of uncomfortable silence, the boy opened his mouth as if to say something, but soon thought the better of it. He turned around quickly, and walked out again, shutting the door behind him.

When the first monster rose from the ocean and attacked San Francisco, Jean Prouvaire was so high he didn’t realise what he was watching on the TV. Neither, in his defence, did Bossuet, who was equally stoned at the time. They’d been flicking through the channels, looking for something funny to watch, and they’d settled on a monster movie.

Here’s what Enjolras does know: he knows that he hasn’t seen Grantaire since he said he didn’t feel anything for him when they weren't fucking, and he knows that half the songs in this set are all of the words Enjolras couldn’t say then, that he definitely couldn’t say to his face even now.

"It isn’t all that bad,” Grantaire says, tail waving around idly. “I mean. I’m better at being a dragon. Better than I was at being human. I was pretty shit at being human.”

“But,” Enjolras thinks about Grantaire’s mismatched hoard and his gruff but overall friendly demeanor. “You’re awful at being a dragon.”

Grantaire responds to that by slamming his tail right into Enjolras’ gut.

The other day, I thought I’d celebrate my birthday by typing up my headcanons for a super self-indulgent e/R AU, and then I got super caught up in it and wound up almost writing the whole fic instead.

So here is Part One of the PUBLIC RADIO AU that literally nobody was asking for, in which Enjolras is a determined radio reporter, Bahorel has a wildly successful travel show, and Grantaire is the undisputed master of the uncomfortable metaphor.

Based on the Tumblr post that asked for the hellish and #realistic coffee shop aus rather than sanitized versions of retail.

Grantaire moves into an apartment inhabited by a poltergeist. Enjolras haunts him, and Grantaire should really win an award for most complicated relationship status ever.

Enjolras has a very important, and deceptively simple, mission. He just has to remember the coded language, get the coffee cup, and deposit it at one of the drop sites. Easy.

Besides, Combeferre and Courfeyrac are incredibly good at what they do, and their plan is, at a glance, foolproof. However, they forgot to take into account one simple, fundamental detail:

The universe, for whatever reason, wants to make Enjolras suffer.

And that's where Grantaire comes in.

The quiet whisper of 'Combeferre' is what really settles the fury of Tyr in his blood. Combeferre always settles when Enjolras speaks, even when he is trying to ignite a fire in the blood of the men around him. Enjolras is nest brother, home, safety; and in Enjolras is control. Control allows Combeferre to settle down upon his haunches and uncurl his wings. Gavroche and Courfeyrac are safe - no more canons are firing; indeed, all the National Guardsmen that are still alive have retreated. An intelligent move on their part.

I don't know if this got through but here we go again... "If you're there, when the world comes to gather me in / if you're there, I will be blessed / I will be blessed"... I don't know what else just surprise me with your great writing skills. Seriously, I wish I could be as good as you.

Combeferre adds more honey to his tea; Grantaire can hear the silver spoon clinking against the porcelain teacup. “You realize how severe the repercussions from this could be,” Combeferre says.

“A parent intentionally cursing their own child?” Grantaire shudders. “It’s a legal problem as well as an emotionally devastating one, if Enjolras ever finds out. Not to mention the complete financial disaster tied up with all of that gold.”

The wonderful thing about Enjolras is how loose and unguarded and happy his magic is.

"I live with Enjolras, and all I can tell you is that I've never seen him show passion towards anyone besides the full-page photo of Karl Marx in his 19th century philosophy textbook."
Beside them, Combeferre lets out a loud groan and faceplants on the kitchen table, nearly upsetting his coffee mug. A flash of guilt passes over Courfeyrac's face. "I mean that...not in a weird way."
"Stop talking," Combeferre says. "Please."

Or, Combeferre is terrified of everyone and hopelessly in love with his best friend and Grantaire is homeless and suddenly finds himself living in a commune where everyone is overly invested in organic gardening and something called Kombucha. No one ever said your 20s were easy.

Enjolras wakes up and it's yesterday. And it keeps on being yesterday, over and over again.

He's not an idiot, he knows his solution has to do with Grantaire, he's seen the damn movie, but there's a reason why he's avoided thinking of this thing between them for so long now.

He has all the time in the world to think about it now, though.

Combeferre gives him a pitying look. “You bought him chocolates on Valentine’s Day.”

“I was hungry. We were studying together. The chocolate was on offer.”

 

Grantaire's been in love since forever; Enjolras has been oblivious since forever.

"People usually have a destination in mind. They want to get to the next galaxy or visit a friend on a moon. If you don't have a destination, that means you're just trying to get away from where you are."

The stranger sinks down into the seat gingerly, as if Grantaire might brandish the guns he really does own and tell him to fuck off at any moment. "I could be a criminal."

"Yeah, well." Grantaire shrugs. "I actually am a criminal."

Combeferre wakes in a strange room on a strange ship, with the spacesuit that can get him home hopelessly, desperately lost in a place where no one speaks a language he knows and gravity boxes him in. Grantaire hopes to make at least one of those things less true.

Grantaire and Enjolras had a good thing going. Grantaire needed legal counsel/an assistant, and Enjolras wanted to leverage Grantaire’s corporate connections for the greater good. Over the course of two years, they had built a fantastic professional relationship. Then Enjolras had to go ruin everything and quit.
The gnawing feeling in Grantaire’s stomach is because he knows he’ll never find a replacement as good as Enjolras. He’s experiencing the normal amount of devastation one expects to feel at a colleague’s impending departure. That’s it.

Grantaire is nothing good. Enjolras doesn’t need to know anything more about him to be sure of that. He brings weed to his neighbours’ house and plasters himself all over people he doesn’t know. He smells like cigarettes and whiskey and looks starved. He’s got rough hands and dark circles under his eyes that make him look sickly. He’s trouble embodied, but Enjolras doesn’t want to let go; he can’t make himself do it.

Combeferre is having a terrible summer. He has to intern for some professors, who he's pretty sure are supervillains, if he wants to graduate next year, Enjolras and Courfeyrac have been avoiding him, and two superheroes- Avenger and The Center- have been taking over the news and barging into his work.

"I know there's some good in you."

Combeferre snorted "I'm pretty sure all that's on me right now is ramen, Redbull, and spite."

Les Amis de l'ABC are a group of wannabe revolutionaries using cybercrime to their advantage. Enjolras is a security engineer by day, vigilante hacker by night. Grantaire is an artist, Enjolras is pretty sure—but he's an artist who catches on to what the ABC are doing surprisingly quickly. One part Mr. Robot AU, one part spy thriller, one part Romeo and Juliet, a splash of Fight Club, a lot of making out. Probably-inaccurate hacker AU.

“This all starts with a cup of coffee at some place that isn't Starbucks, and then Grantaire has a gun pushed between Enjolras's teeth and he's saying, “Talk now. Talk or I swear to god I'll shoot.”

The two of them stand side-by-side as they look down at their friend. Enjolras’ head is tilted to the left and he’s frowning. Combeferre’s got his arms crossed over his chest, one hand covering his mouth as he shakes his head. Courfeyrac is passed out on the couch. Well, mostly on the couch. His limbs are a little askew and hanging off the edge here and there, but it’s clear he was aiming for the couch. He’s face down and, well, completely naked.

(An E/R version of The Big Romantic Scene, so possible spoilers for anyone who hasn’t seen Penelope WHICH YOU TOTALLY SHOULD.)

It has been six years since Grantaire last saw the twins Angèle and Cosette; six years since they were mysteriously adopted on Christmas Day. Grantaire remained a foster at the Thénardier home until he could leave for university, and although it has been years, he still aches for the fiery girl in the attic. In his third year at University, he finds himself thinking of her again, painting her again, beginning to burn all over again for reasons he can’t explain.
Meanwhile, his lovely roommate, dear friend and casual fuckbuddy Jehan Prouvaire has found a new social group. They are a hopeful assembly of student would-be-revolutionaries, containing friends both old and new and an onslaught of tensions to be resolved. Grantaire is not moved by their politics but he finds them fantastic company, and it is only after he has been truly absorbed into their number that he can be arsed to attend a meeting.
There he meets the final member of their group, the Fearless Leader… for the second time.

It's strange how one sudden event can change someone forever.

Bio & Medicine have the best meals, and Marius knows this. Combeferre cannot mentally will the bottle of wine open, and they all know it. Their professors are feuding—how could they not know?—and Valjean is, perhaps, playing favourites. Only Courfeyrac knows this, which is why Enjolras is re-reading Crime & Punishment (again). That particular dish isn't safe for the microwave—they're all praying that Bossuet knows that. Jean's got a secret lover—which Jean, though? You never know; not with a good half-dozen Jeans rushing 'round campus, and to be quite honest, they're not too sure, either—but they're all taking bets that the better half is not going to figure it out before they can. And, speaking of wagers, someone's bet Grantaire half a hundred that he can't jump from the roof without shattering his shin—the right one, in particular—and Joly's promised to break whatever bones are left, should he deign to do it. Why can't R simply sell fondant cakes? Will E finish his dissertation? Did Feuilly really steal the Common Room sofa, and did he have help?
