Noahpinion: I get what you get in ten years, in two days
"The usual economist case for income redistribution is based on utilitarianism; the idea is that $1000 matters more to a poor person than to a rich person. Mankiw wants to ditch this idea in favor of a value system based on 'just deserts':
...
"In 10 years, Mike gets $250,000. That is about what Brad gets in three days (not two; sorry, Chris Brown).
...
"'OK,' Mike says. 'But why, then, is Brad CEO so much more produtive than I am? Where does his $30 million productivity come from?' ... 'So let me get this straight,' Mike says. 'Brad deserves to be so much richer than me because of ability he was born with? People who are lucky enough to be born with high skills deserve to be able to get a Civic in half a day, while people who were born with fewer skills deserve to have to slave away for years if they want a Civic?'
"Anyway, Dr. Mankiw's answer is not forthcoming, and Mike cannot leave a comment on Mankiw's blog, due to the no-comments policy. So our story continues."

David Brooks Proposes a Kinder, Gentler Republican Party | Rolling Stone
"Back in the old days, when the Republican Party could count on the support of 'less-educated voters' without having to actually give them anything, what we got all the time from people like Brooks were fatuous bromides about how anyone who was struggling lacked a work ethic and an appreciation of family structure. Government aid of any kind to help people out of economic hard times he always ripped as counterproductive and morally corrupting. But now that he's being crapped on by a new movement of independent-minded, rebellious nativists who have no use for a moralizing, polysyllabic New Yorker like himself – now that he can hear the sharpening of the guillotines – suddenly Brooks is all in favor of government policies to help the 'working class,' a group of people he's presumably never met."

Man Quits Internet: Goodbye, Hugo Schwyzer | The Hairpin
from Mira in comments section: "...when one of the most high-profile practitioners of his extra-gross brand of exploitation leaves the Internet, we're allowed to celebrate it. Publicly speaking as a feminist when you aren't actually a feminist really is a serious problem for feminism, especially when the speaker is a dude, because by virtue of his gender he will be taken more seriously by more people who are more willing to listen to him than will any dozen actual feminists who happen to be women. Living LivingSocial: How D.C.'s homegrown coupon giant is trying to change its culture—and ours - Washington City Paper
comment section hehe

"(2) Simon's piece also shows the complexities of company culture, in particular how a culture that initially has a business purpose (innovation) can grow and cross a line, until you have an undefined "culture" that is effectively just "the type of people we like to hang out with". I'm always skeptical when people in my company or other companies evaluate potential or current employees based on "cultural fit" without having a specific definition of their culture and the business purpose their culture serves. That inevitably leads to discriminatory hiring and promotions, which multiple commenters here point to as a problem at LS."

Taibbi on Bill Moyers vs. Bill O'Reilly | Common Dreams
"O'Reilly bashed PBS for funding lefty agitators like Bill Moyers. "Here's what we get – a $16 trillion debt, and we've gotta pay for Bill Moyers," O'Reilly boomed. He also at one point held up a flash card with a picture of Moyers, along with the headline, "Why is NPR getting our money?"

There were only two problems with O'Reilly's argument:

1) Bill Moyers doesn't work for NPR, and never has.

2) Bill Moyers doesn't receive any money from PBS. His show is entirely self-supported by donors. If anything, Moyers supports public television."

How Apple and Amazon Security Flaws Led to My Epic Hacking | Gadget Lab | Wired.com
"...what happened to me exposes vital security flaws in several customer service systems, most notably Apple’s and Amazon’s. Apple tech support gave the hackers access to my iCloud account. Amazon tech support gave them the ability to see a piece of information — a partial credit card number — that Apple used to release information. In short, the very four digits that Amazon considers unimportant enough to display in the clear on the web are precisely the same ones that Apple considers secure enough to perform identity verification. The disconnect exposes flaws in data management policies endemic to the entire technology industry, and points to a looming nightmare as we enter the era of cloud computing and connected devices."
...
"He said the hack was simply a grab for my three-character Twitter handle. That’s all they wanted. They just wanted to take it, and fuck shit up, and watch it burn. It wasn’t personal. “I honestly didn’t have any heat towards you before this. i just liked your username like I said before” he told me via Twitter Direct Message."

SWINGING MODERN SOUNDS #30: What Is And Is Not Masculine - The Rumpus.net
"The hip crowds who liked the swagger of 'fake jazz' dematerialized in New York City rather quickly when the Lounge Lizards became more complex. The fault here would seem to lie with the audience, with the 'known world, basically,' with the kinds of audience members who wanted to 'sleep with' Lurie or 'punch him in the face,' which is to say the heartless and artless and celebrity-afflicted, the profile writers, the would-bes, but nevermind.
...
"'Mystery illness' sounds a great deal like it is blaming the victim, an interpretation that becomes increasingly obvious when the day on which Lurie fell ill is more noteworthy, in Friend’s profile, for his concerns about penile size than his illness. ...Is there no attempt, by the reporter to look into chronic Lyme and to attempt to understand it? Are all sufferers with 'fibromyalgia' just neurotic women who need to lighten up and enjoy life?
...
"Because strange details are a kind of modesty, they are Lurie refusing to dwell on the painful stuff in conversation. It’s in the music, yes, high feeling is always in the music, is always confronted there directly, not in words, but in music and its capacity for high feeling, and that is lost on Friend, because the music is lost on Friend, who considers it 'borderline annoying,' and undestined to sell lots of copies. More copies would mean more interest would mean closer to the movies, or a cinematic level of cultural penetration, which would mean bingo!"
