"provides the most comprehensive account to date of the disappearance of five Hong Kong booksellers in late 2015, and gives special attention to the worrying cases of booksellers Gui Minhai and Lee Bo, both foreign nationals who were seized by Chinese agents across borders—in Thailand and Hong Kong, respectively—in violation of international law."

WashPost Makes History: First Paper to Call for Prosecution of Its Own Source (After Accepting Pulitzer)
"In arguing that no public interest was served by exposing PRISM, what did the Post editors forget to mention? That the newspaper that (simultaneous with The Guardian) made the choice to expose the PRISM program by spreading its operational details and top-secret manual all over its front page is called … the Washington Post."  washingtonpost  2016  2010s  pulitzer  prize  newspaper  op-ed  glenn_greenwald  edward_snowden  criminal  NSA  prism  screengrab  publishing  leak  journalism  hypocrisy  secret  government  transparency

Read this article. Rewrite it. Throw out your draft and write something else. Throw that out, too. « We Who Are About To Die
"Cross this out.

The writing game has an air of Sisyphus about it. It’s not all about reaching the finish line. It’s about starting over and over and over and …"

| on turning 39 and the qualia of consciousness/ problem of war
"People think of PTSD as something men get from war, but it is also a thing women get from living as women which is also war. And it would be easier and more political if all the events of living as a woman which threatened my survival were merely socially constructed, but some of it was just so biological. Then the biological met the political. The social and the political and the biological met the economic. It sometimes met the legal, sometimes the bill collectors. There was the violent and the violent was always a result of the romantic. The romantic felt biological, and often resulted in the reproductive. The reproductive is war and against-war.
"It’s yet another error in perception of the affluent that those with social protection can look at those who have, at times lacked it, and imagine that weakness is in the bleeder, not those who have never bled."

A Shout Out to My Pepys - The Wave, or Why to Publish (corrected and expanded)
"So this is the story of how a young person headed for a tough life in a hard city became a seller of 'Early Printed Books, Incunabula, Renaissance Humanism, Early and Important Editions of the Greek & Latin Classics, Early Illustrated Books, Emblem Books, Theology, Early Bibles (in Greek & Latin).' And my father’s books were the key to that world. Not any of the award-winning novels, or the studies of Italian post-war literature, but the plot summary study aids he bought for $1.95 so he wouldn’t have to read his assigned work in remedial adult high school.

"Publish! Record! Blog, even! Don’t just create, distribute, as far and wide as you can... If you have something to say or make, please put some effort into sharing it."
