The government says his DACA status expired, but this immigrant says he was deported despite protections | PBS NewsHour
"Montes’ lawyers say he had previously been approved twice for deportation protection under the DACA program, created in 2012 under then-President Barack Obama to allow immigrants who came to the U.S. as children to temporarily live and work in the country. The Department of Homeland Security told NewsHour on Tuesday its records indicated Montes’ authorization expired in 2015. On Wednesday, the department told NewsHour a more detailed search indicated Montes’ DACA authorization did expire in 2018, but that Montes had lost his DACA status “when he left the United States without advance parole,” before he encountered U.S. Border Patrol on Feb. 19. The Department of Homeland Security told NewsHour on Wednesday that “there are no records or evidence to support” the claim that he was detained Feb. 18 in Calexico, as his lawyers claim."

Over 700 people file suits over Japan’s new security laws | The Japan Times
"The legislation, allowing Japan to use force to defend the United States and other allies if they came under attack, even if Japan itself is not attacked, followed the Abe Cabinet’s reinterpretation of the Constitution in July 2014 as allowing the country to exercise the right to collective self-defense.

"Several individuals have brought legal action against the government, seeking that the laws be scrapped or declared unconstitutional, but have seen their cases dismissed before reaching deliberation.
"Article 9 states Japan forever renounces war and will not maintain armed forces as a means of settling international disputes.

The Breaking News Consumer's Handbook - On The Media
via Tips for handling breaking news:
1. In the immediate aftermath, news outlets will get it wrong.
2. Don't trust anonymous sources.
3. Don't trust stories that cite another news outlet as the source of the information.
4. There's almost never a second shooter.
5. Pay attention to the language the media uses.
* "We are getting reports" ... could mean anything.
* "We are seeking confirmation" ... means they don't have it.
* "[News outlet] has learned" ... means it has a scoop or is going out on a limb.
6. Look for news outlets close to the incident.
7. Compare multiple sources.
8. Big news brings out the fakers. And photoshoppers.
9. Beware reflexive retweeting. Some of this is on you.

#22 - What Happens When You Tell The Whole Internet Your Password - On The Media
So the moment that defines the movie actually is there’s where Robin Williams is teaching English as a second language to a group of people. He’s talking to an elderly man, and he’s saying to this elderly man “I’m attacking you! I have a spoon and I’m attacking you with my spoon! What do you do?”

So he says, “I’m sitting here. I do nothing.”

And Robin Williams says, “Well I’m coming after you, I’ve got my spoon, I’m going for you, I’m about to kill you!” and the man said something like, “Then I am dying.”

What he’s saying is “I subscribe to peace. So if you truly have the incivility to attack me to the point of death, then what I’m doing is, I’m dying." Real bravery is staying to committed to your principles even if it means your own death. That’s quite extreme. I’m not sure that I’m that far along, but I understand the theory.

Suicide and the Economy - Elizabeth MacBride - The Atlantic
"My family had not only refused to speak of Roy, they rewrote the story of his death. Within hours, they closed ranks. A second cousin, a local policeman, told the newspaper Roy was subject to fainting spells. His mother said he died of a heart attack in a parking garage; according to another family story, he’d fallen in front of a train. Eventually, the lie became the truth. I flipped through the journals his mother wrote in 1950s. She mentioned Roy once, when a passerby reminded her of him. Then she went back later and whited out his name."
