Being Beguine | Sisters of the Valley
"If no-one objects to the rather bizarre notion that nuns wear their wedding dresses daily, to re-live their marriage to God, then certainly people can wrap their heads around the concept of a Sisterhood of women who work with cannabis plants, make home-made tonics and tinctures, and support themselves through their own labors and without need of alms?
"They object because there are no men in charge here. They object because there is no male-founded, male-run, male dominated church here. There are men here, of course, but they don’t run the show. Furthermore, our order is ‘self-formed’ and, as ‘weed-nuns’, we are self-declared, which makes us empowered, and the old grey-haired white dudes running the central valley of California find that to be frightening.
"In case you hadn’t heard, we are leaving a two-hundred-thousand-year-old period of male energies ruling the planet and are entering the age of feminine energies ruling the planet. We are leaving our ‘conquer all’ mentality that formed our civilizations and we are entering an age of preservation, nurturing, nesting. Of course, female energies must now rule, if we want to keep our people inhabiting this planet. (Never mind Trump, Brexit, Geert Wilders, Marine Le Pen, and the others of their ilk, they represent the last gasp of a dying paradigm. The New, Ugly Surge in Violence and Threats Against Abortion Providers | MetaFilter #6300938
long good comment (partial excerpt here)

I hold that the "life starts at conception" model of life, that presents life as a set of instructions rather than a specific, embodied, material entity, is in fact of itself anti-woman, anti-worker, and anti-human. I say this because it neglects the role of work in the making of a human, specifically the grueling, health-wrecking, dangerous work done by women's bodies in realizing a baby through following the fertilized zygote's instructions for babymaking. Because the (fundamentally Platonist) "life from conception" model presents instructions as perfect and complete in and of themselves — as already alive — the only contributions the mother makes are understood as negative. By doing the wrong thing, or eating the wrong thing, or aborting the process of baby-making, a woman might screw up her baby, but all of her positive work done in turning a set of instructions into a real baby is ignored. This is because the baby is already real, in this model, even when it's just a set of instructions and not much else. No woman required, at least not once she's provided the half-set of instructions found in her egg.

Stop Saying "I Have A Boyfriend" — Eberhardt Smith
>> Male privilege is “I have a boyfriend” being the only thing that can actually stop someone from hitting on you because they respect another male-bodied person more than they respect your rejection/lack of interest.

"This amazingly puts into one sentence what I have been attempting to explain to ex-boyfriends and friends (male and female) for years, mostly unsuccessfully.
"This tactic also brings up the question of the alternative. If the woman in question was boyfriend-free, would she automatically be swooning in the arms of the creep harassing her? Unlikely. from Mira in comments section: "...when one of the most high-profile practitioners of his extra-gross brand of exploitation leaves the Internet, we're allowed to celebrate it. Publicly speaking as a feminist when you aren't actually a feminist really is a serious problem for feminism, especially when the speaker is a dude, because by virtue of his gender he will be taken more seriously by more people who are more willing to listen to him than will any dozen actual feminists who happen to be women. Gender Knot Revised Ed: Unraveling Our Patriarchal Legacy - Allan Johnson - Google Books
"When men feel inconsequential, it’s easier to blame women than it is to confront patriarchy - the true source of the diminishment and lack of meaning in so many men’s lives. When men feel unloved and disconnected, it’s easier to accuse women of not loving them well enough than it is to consider men’s own alienation from life. It’s easier to think of women as keeping men from the essence of their own lives than it is to see how men’s participation in patriarchy can suffocate and kill the life within themselves. It’s easier to theorize about powerful, devouring mothers than to confront the reality of patriarchy.

"Beneath the massive denial of men’s power and responsibility and its projection onto women is an enormous pool of rage, resentment, and fear. Rather than look at patriarchy and their place within it, many men will beat, rape, torture, murder, and oppress women, children, and one another. They will wage mindless war and offer themselves up for the slaughter, chain themselves to jobs and work themselves to numbed exhaustion as if their lives had no value or meaning beyond controlling or being controlled or defending against control, and content themselves with half-lives of confused, lost deprivation. What men lack, women didn’t take from them, and it isn’t up to women to give it back."

"This whole sassiness thing – everything's got to be sarcastic, everything's got to be knowing, everything's got to be cynical. You've got to be on top of your shit twenty-four hours a day. THAT is exhausting. It's just far better to go, you know what? I'm just basically a monkey in a dress, and the best I can hope for every day is just to be nice, to smile as much as possible, to be gentle, try and be a bit understanding, work really hard, go and smell some flowers, have a cup of tea, ring your mum if you get on with her, just kind of dial it down a bit. An Interview With Caitlin Moran | The Hairpin
"The why not to have children chapter was written as a love letter to my sister Caz. She's always made it very clear that she never wants to have kids. One of the first questions men or women ask you is "Have you got kids?" At the start of a conversation you shouldn't be having to say "My womb's all fucked up and I haven't got a boyfriend!"
"The trick is, and there's a little bit of heartbreak, you have to just give up on the idea of being a princess. You have to give up on the idea of being fabulous. My kind of base position on existence is that you just have to admit you're a bit of a twat. You're a bit of a div, you're a kind of sweaty, stumpy, well-meaning idiot and you're trying your hardest, but it's just enough to be a sort of pleasant, polite person who's working quite hard and tries to be nice to the people they're nice to. We don't need to have any more ambitions than that! This whole sassiness thing – everything's got to be sarcastic, everything's got to be knowing, everything's got to be cynical... THAT is exhausting. It's just far better to go, you know what? I'm just basically a monkey in a dress, and the best I can hope for every day is just to be nice... just kind of dial it down a bit. How the ‘war on women’ quashed feminist stereotypes - The Washington Post
"The image of the feminist as a mirthless, hirsute, sex-averse succubus is a friendly-fire casualty of the Republican 'war on women.' It's a grave loss to conservatives, who have used this faithful foot soldier as a comfortably grotesque stand-in for the real people whose liberties they have sought to conscribe: women."
"In activism, an image problem becomes a structural problem: Twisted but resonant stereotypes make women hesitant to identify with the movement to expand their rights. And if women won’t organize and advocate on their own behalf, the work of anti-feminists is done."
"In 2012, the anti-everything platform was occupied not by feminist agitators but the GOP politicians they were battling."

NBC's "Whitney" and CBS' "2 Broke Girls" : The New Yorker
"The problem is that 'Whitney' is a terrible show, though in ways that resonate with our culture’s debates about women and humor..."

"...Women are conniving and dull. The show feels startlingly retro and cruel... Yet in later episodes of 'Whitney' the mood becomes less caustic (you can practically hear the network notes), which only makes things worse. Whitney’s boyfriend calls her his 'best friend,' the audience awws, and the show, which has so little heart, loses even its cold, dark soul, as Whitney morphs from Lucy into Harriet, the patient and boring wife."

Fashion is a Feminist Issue | Greta Christina's Blog
"It is the height of irony that women are valued for our looks, encouraged to make ourselves beautiful and ornamental… and are then derided as shallow and vain for doing so. And it’s a subtle but definite form of sexism to take one of the few forms of expression where women have more freedom, and treat it as a form of expression that’s inherently superficial and trivial. Like it or not, fashion and style are primarily a women’s art form. And I think it gets treated as trivial because women get treated as trivial."
