This Weird Person Might Save You From Online Harassment — Backchannel — Medium
"This is someone who cares, but who doesn't care if others agree with how they care."

"Maymay believes that people too often forget that companies' interests are not always aligned with those of their users. The services want users to stay focused on doing things that will drive the bottom line. Crane, who writes technical copy for the products and is instrumental in their design, offers a more blunt explanation: 'They don't want their users coming on a dating site and thinking about getting raped.'"

I Liked Everything I Saw on Facebook for Two Days. Here’s What It Did to Me | Gadget Lab | WIRED
"By the end of day one, I noticed that on mobile, my feed was almost completely devoid of human content."

"As day one rolled into day two, I began dreading going to Facebook."

"This is a problem much bigger than Facebook. It reminded me of what can go wrong in society, and why we now often talk _at_ each other instead of _to_ each other. We set up our political and social filter bubbles and they reinforce themselves—the things we read and watch have become hyper-niche and cater to our specific interests. We go down rabbit holes of special interests until we're lost in the queen's garden, cursing everyone above ground."

Carolyn Hax: Husband’s online ties to a female employee define ‘emotional affair’ - The Washington Post
from Hax:

"You do need to make clear that this isn’t about whether physical cheating has or hasn’t happened or will happen. It’s about what he fully admits is happening: His time with you is spent talking to her. He’s taking his best self (such as it is, but you can omit that part) outside the marriage. That’s what you’re objecting to.

"Well, that and his utterly loveless response to your concerns.

"I type all this out knowing the chances are slim to zero that he’ll look inward, fall to his knees with remorse over his self-indulgence and recommit himself to your marriage. But, the part where you state your feelings clearly is important."

comment from jalesq:

"Your husband is doing what he wants because he wants to do it. He's aware that its extreme; he's aware this is painful for you. He's aware that it can be 'misunderstood' and that it could open up all sorts of problems.

"He does not care about that ~ not enough to stop. Talking to this woman gives him a rush. A feeling he doesn't feel any other way ~ and that includes you, sadly. Ignore the 'woo him back' remarks. That will simply add to your humiliation ~ and he's humiliating you for his need. He will continue to talk to this woman for has long as *she* allows it: you have no real power over it.

"In short, you have been demoted... He is telling you loud and clear that your feelings are not his priority. His are. And he likes how he feels doing this, no matter how crazy it makes you.

"Do you still want to be married to someone like that?"

Hijacking feminism - Opinion - Al Jazeera English
"US women do not need to change their attitude; they need, first, job security, good childcare, livable wages for the work they do, and physical security."
...
"Indeed, it is extremely disturbing that for these high-powered women the 'woman problem' is no longer about social justice, equity and women's emancipation - as if these have already been achieved - but about affect, behaviour modification and well-roundedness."

Salman Rushdie and Facebook's pseudonym policy. - Slate Magazine
"[I]ts stance on pseudonyms is more than a stupid policy. It's part and parcel of Facebook's noxious vision for the future of the Internet, where privacy—rather than hard-earned cash—becomes the currency of the day."

The Social Graph is Neither (Pinboard Blog)
"In the old country, for example, we have two kinds of 'friendship' (distinguished by whether you address one another with the informal pronoun) and going from one status to the other is a pretty big deal; you have to drink a toast with your arms all in a pretzel and it's considered a huge faux pas to suggest it before both people feel ready. But at least it's not ambiguous!

"And of course sex complicates things even more. Will it get me in hot water to have a crush on someone but have a different person as my muse? Does spouse imply sweetheart, or do I have to explicilty declare that (perhaps on our 20th anniversary)? And should restrainingOrder be an edge or a node in this data model?"
...
"This obsession with modeling has led us into a social version of the Uncanny Valley, that weird phenomenon from computer graphics where the more faithfully you try to represent something human, the creepier it becomes. As the model becomes more expressive, we really start to notice the places where it fails."

Facebook Adds Privacy Controls [Facebook Tip]
Just because your Uncle Joe joined Facebook and you added him as a friend doesn't mean you can't upload photos from the keg party. Facebook just added finer privacy controls to the network which let you expand access to your info to friends of your friends, and exclude friends on a name by name basis from particular bits of information. To see the new privacy controls, log in to Facebook and on the privacy page, go to Profile, and click the "Edit Custom Settings..." link.
