Noahpinion: I get what you get in ten years, in two days
"The usual economist case for income redistribution is based on utilitarianism; the idea is that $1000 matters more to a poor person than to a rich person. Mankiw wants to ditch this idea in favor of a value system based on 'just deserts':
"In 10 years, Mike gets $250,000. That is about what Brad gets in three days (not two; sorry, Chris Brown).
"'OK,' Mike says. 'But why, then, is Brad CEO so much more produtive than I am? Where does his $30 million productivity come from?' ... 'So let me get this straight,' Mike says. 'Brad deserves to be so much richer than me because of ability he was born with? People who are lucky enough to be born with high skills deserve to be able to get a Civic in half a day, while people who were born with fewer skills deserve to have to slave away for years if they want a Civic?'
"Anyway, Dr. Mankiw's answer is not forthcoming, and Mike cannot leave a comment on Mankiw's blog, due to the no-comments policy. So our story continues."

Carolyn Hax: Vulnerability and self-esteem in a relationship - comment from pdianek
don't mind me, just copying this in full!:

"Don't compare yourself to other people, especially whose whom you do not know personally or who are utterly hypothetical.

"Don't compare your SO to other people, especially men who treated you horribly. He's entitled to smudge his own copybook -- or keep it beautifully neat.

"And if he does eventually break up with you, remind yourself that that means he does not value your most fabulous qualities, and that you have therefore dodged a bullet!"

Godwin's law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Godwin's law does not claim to articulate a fallacy; it is instead framed as a memetic tool to reduce the incidence of inappropriate hyperbolic comparisons. "Although deliberately framed as if it were a law of nature or of mathematics, its purpose has always been rhetorical and pedagogical: I wanted folks who glibly compared someone else to Hitler or to Nazis to think a bit harder about the Holocaust", Godwin has written.

A Land Without Guns: How Japan Has Virtually Eliminated Shooting Deaths - Max Fisher - The Atlantic
"[E]ven the police did not carry firearms themselves until, in 1946, the American occupation authority ordered them to. Now, Japanese police receive more hours of training than their American counterparts, are forbidden from carrying off-duty, and invest hours in studying martial arts in part because they "are expected to use [firearms] in only the rarest of circumstances," according to Kopel."

Flashed Face Distortion Effect Makes Ordinary Portraits Look Hideous
The “Flashed Face Distortion Effect”: by flashing ordinary portraits aligned at the eyes, the human brain begins to compare and exaggerate the differences, causing the faces to seem hideous and ogre-like.
