sad pictures for children by Ono One (deleted) — Kickstarter
january 2018 by cluebucket
"I am making the loudest sound I know how to make. I know that some people will be personally offended that I am doing this, but I am doing this in large part because our culture has developed in such a way that some of the intelligent, empathetic people who follow me will believe they feel more psychological pain because of books being burnt, their money and my attitude about them than because of the destruction of the natural world, the continuation of classist, racist, abusive patterns of behavior and representation, etc."

Revenge of the Lunch Lady - The Huffington Post
february 2017 by cluebucket
"In 2014, now-House Speaker Paul Ryan said that public assistance, including school lunch, offered a “full stomach and an empty soul” because it made kids reliant on government handouts. With the party now in control of Congress and the White House—and with Michelle Obama, the program’s greatest defender, gone—school lunch is as vulnerable as it’s ever been."

What Makes Languages Change? How Culture Shapes Our Words
january 2017 by cluebucket
Q: When you say it doesn’t “borrow,” do you have an example?
A: The word they use for automobile means “that it has wrinkled feet,” which is, incidentally, an example of how the words you have reflect your culture. If you’re a tracker, you’re going to be noticing the tire tracks—the focus of that particular word. And the word for telephone means “you whisper into it.”

How Morality Changes in a Foreign Language - Scientific American
september 2016 by cluebucket
yarp!
"Their participants’ skin responses revealed heightened arousal for taboo words compared to neutral ones, especially when these were spoken in their native Turkish. But the strongest difference between languages was evident with reprimands: the volunteers responded very mildly to the English phrases, but had powerful reactions to the Turkish ones, with some reporting that they “heard” these reprimands in the voices of close relatives."

Mineful Response and the Rise of Corporatist Spirituality « Speculative Non-Buddhism
february 2016 by cluebucket
"The Mindful-One on the couch says something with a chuckle. I can only make out the first and last parts: 'maybe we should…so they don’t rush the stage.' It gets a big, nervous laugh. Then, he gets serious. So should you.
"'This is sort of an important moment,' he proclaims. Is he about to tell us that 'Corporations have historically had a giant footprint on public infrastructure, communities and the environment without paying for it, and Google is no different. They’ll avoid paying for privatizing our bus stops like they avoid paying $11 billion in federal taxes. When a company’s chairman publicly says, 'We’re proudly capitalistic. I’m not confused about this,' you know Don’t Be Evil was just a sick joke of the Googlezillionaires.'
"No, he isn’t about to tell us that. Of course not."
...
"In under three minutes, the clip validates Slavoj Žižek’s claims that western x-buddhism, of which mindfulness has become a dominant variety, is the perfect partner for or 'supplement' to our hyper-consumerist techno-capitalist corporations."

Problems We Don't Really Want to Solve — Strong Towns
february 2016 by cluebucket
"This is the system that we’ve inherited. But here’s the rub. A larger and larger proportion of the American population of all colors is slipping from comfortable middle class status to a state of reduced circumstances. Many of the folks who always believed they could buy their way in to the better places are now finding themselves in the lesser environments – the kinds of situations they were happy to impose on others in the past. And they’re really pissed off about it."

David Brooks Proposes a Kinder, Gentler Republican Party | Rolling Stone
january 2016 by cluebucket
"Back in the old days, when the Republican Party could count on the support of 'less-educated voters' without having to actually give them anything, what we got all the time from people like Brooks were fatuous bromides about how anyone who was struggling lacked a work ethic and an appreciation of family structure. Government aid of any kind to help people out of economic hard times he always ripped as counterproductive and morally corrupting. But now that he's being crapped on by a new movement of independent-minded, rebellious nativists who have no use for a moralizing, polysyllabic New Yorker like himself – now that he can hear the sharpening of the guillotines – suddenly Brooks is all in favor of government policies to help the 'working class,' a group of people he's presumably never met."
