Warren Ellis – WARREN ELLIS is a graphic novelist, writer, public speaker and author of the NYT best-selling novel GUN MACHINE.
via mefi user holborne, from Orbital Operations newsletter:

"I understand there’s been some confusion online as to whether it’s ever right to punch a Nazi in the face. There is a compelling argument that all speech is equal and we should trust to the discourse to reveal these ideas for what they are and confidently expect them to be denounced and crushed out by the mechanisms of democracy and freedom.

"All I can tell you is, from my perspective as an old English socialist and cultural liberal who is probably way to the woolly left from most of you and actually has a medal for services to free speech — yes, it is always correct to punch Nazis. They lost the right to not be punched in the face when they started spouting genocidal ideologies that in living memory killed millions upon millions of people. And anyone who stands up and respectfully applauds their perfect right to say these things should probably also be punched, because they are clearly surplus to human requirements. Nazis do not need a hug. Nazis do not need to be indulged. Their world doesn’t get better until you’ve been removed from it. Your false equivalences mean nothing. Their agenda is always, always, extermination. Nazis need a punch in the face."

That's just how you negotiate with a Nazi. Ask your grandfather. | MetaFilter #6886229
first published 1945:
"Less well known is the paradox of tolerance: Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them.
...
"We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant. We should claim that any movement preaching intolerance places itself outside the law, and we should consider incitement to intolerance and persecution as criminal, in the same way as we should consider incitement to murder, or to kidnapping, or to the revival of the slave trade, as criminal."

Tamir Rice family attorney says expert reports have 'tainted grand jury process' | US news | The Guardian
RT : New: Expert who wrote Tamir Rice report publicly suggested officer was justified before he was asked to review case

"On Monday Chandra, the Rice family attorney, accused McGinty of 'making no effort to secure justice' for Tamir and said that the boy’s mother, Samaria, thought the prosecutor should step aside to allow outside authorities to take charge of the case.

“'Ms Rice has always been wary of the prosecutor but gave him the benefit of the doubt,' he said. 'But she now believes that because he has tainted the process, a special prosecutor would be best.'"

Godwin's law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Godwin's law does not claim to articulate a fallacy; it is instead framed as a memetic tool to reduce the incidence of inappropriate hyperbolic comparisons. "Although deliberately framed as if it were a law of nature or of mathematics, its purpose has always been rhetorical and pedagogical: I wanted folks who glibly compared someone else to Hitler or to Nazis to think a bit harder about the Holocaust", Godwin has written.

Rick Perry says Wendy Davis should be pro-life because her mother didn’t abort her. We disagree. - Slate Magazine
"To me, the pro-lifer position is 'I love my mother, and I’m so grateful she had me.' The pro-choice position is 'I love my mother, and I’m so grateful she had the right to choose what was best for her and her family.' Both positions are honorable in their way. But only one of them imagines my mother as more than my mother—as a person autonomous of me, and certainly autonomous of the blastocyst that turned into me.

"Before I started writing this piece, I called my mother to ask for her permission. As we were getting off the phone, she said, 'I’m just glad you’re here.' I’m glad I’m here, too. But she was here first."

Heat and storm damage translate into parental power outages - On Parenting - The Washington Post
for some parents I know ;P

"There are four basic elements in my approach, which support a parent being calmly and confidently in charge. The first is attachment and connection... The second is … parenting from strength, rather than neediness and desperation.. The third is helping kids handle frustration so that it doesn’t turn into anger and aggression... And finally, I teach parents to stay cool and calm, rather than turning on what I affectionately refer to as “Mom TV.” "

Tiger Beatdown › Lives worth living: Disability, abortion, and slipshod ethics
"Inevitably, the fact that it’s possible to test for many common disabilities means that abortion for disability is going to come up as a topic. This is a fraught ethical subject, and it’s fraught in no small part because of the social devaluation of disability. On the right, people with disabilities are fetishised as tools and instruments to a larger end; conservatives make sweeping statements about ‘respecting life’ when it comes to fetuses who might be born with disabilities, though of course they do nothing to support those fetuses once they’re born. This rhetoric does not allow room for the fundamental humanity of people with disabilities. Meanwhile, the left treats us like we don’t exist and aren’t a part of society, and don’t belong in society, frequently advancing arguments like Sierra’s: that abortion for disability is, quote, ‘a positive moral choice.‘
...
"What I am pushing for is disability as a value-neutral status that individual disabled people, not the people around them, get to make of what they will. Maybe that means celebrating your amazing body. Maybe that means corrective surgery. Maybe that means something else entirely."

The Tyranny of 'She's Just Jealous' - Jezebel
"It's the Fox News Defense, a great way for people who can't see beyond a woman's femininity and into her ideas to defend women they've decided they support, since treating all lady dissent with the "she's just jealous" panacea assumes that the rest of the public is similarly incapable of separating breasts from brains."
